Last night, the Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series against the New York Yankees in a come -from -behind victory that was something to see! The Yankees were ahead 5-0 in the 5th inning...but then, it all fell apart. One of the things that seemed to portend bad things to come...Aaron Judge DROPPED a pop-up ball that should have been a very easy catch. When they did a replay on it, the announcer just said, "he didn't have his eye on the ball". Oh my, that reminded me of the sports radio announcer that we had here in Atlanta when I was a kid! I just looked him up. His name was Jack Hurst, and he was on WQXI (Quixie Radio) and his sign off was a most memorable: "Keep your eye on the ball". It seems to me that we can all use that advice in our daily lives, to try our best to keep focused on what is important and not to be distracted.
Now back to the baseball game, Freddie Freeman was named the World Series MVP (Most Valuable Player) and rightly so. He broke a record: he is the first player to have hit a homerun in the first four games of a World Series. In that first game, he hit a grand slam! (Bases loaded, which means four runs scored!) He played with the Atlanta Braves for years until he was traded to the Dodgers. There are some who are not too nice about Freddie's success with the Dodgers, but I am not one of them! I think Freddie Freeman is great, and I only wish him the best success. Looks like my wishes have come true for him!
I mentioned to you that Aaron Judge dropped that ball.... I read today that he was pretty upset about it, I think the quote was that he would never forgive himself. Gee, I hope that he will! Anyone can make a mistake! That is another lesson that we need to remember! Yankees fans are pretty rough, so I can only imagine what he might have to put up with from them. I like to watch good baseball, and they were both good teams, but someone has to lose.
"Ain't No Pleasing You", that is a song that seems to go along with this post! I am so happy to tell you that the video by Chas & Dave was recently restored and is now in HD!
I have told you before how much I enjoy our National Anthem sung before our ballgames. I loved this young woman named Pearle Peterson who is only 19 years old! She sang this on Oct. 26th in Los Angeles. No trills or odd interpretations, just straight up great singing. Enjoy!
Oh, and one more thing...do you know why the Dodgers are called that name? They were originally the Brooklyn Dodgers and when they were first there, it was the early days of the trolley cars, and the ballplayers would have to "dodge" the cars on their way to the ballpark!
All the artwork that I showed you of the Peanuts characters, we missed this one. Richard stood just beside a busy street to take this photo for you! You know I had to share Linus and Sally! Aren't they just adorable?
Charles Schultz did a great cartoon once; I wish I could find it for you. It showed Linus being very happy about his team winning a ballgame and going on and on about how much the crowd was cheering and Charlie Brown's reply was : "How did the other team feel?". I always think of that after the World Series celebrations. There is a lot of wisdom from cartoons! (I might have the characters wrong who said this, but you get the idea!)
Take care and remember, "keep your eye on the ball!"
I liked that about how the Dodgers got their name. Some things like that are incredibly old. Everyday sayings yet going back hundreds and sometimes even thousands of years that we just take for granted... like calling someone a Philistine. (Iron age origins) Bob. BSS.
ReplyDeleteI love finding out little tidbits about things. I guess you do too!
DeleteMVP Freddie Freeman is getting a lot of coverage on our Canadian news because he is a dual American-Canadian citizen. Both his parents were Canadians, and he was born to them in California. Out of love and respect for his parents (especially his beloved mother who died young of cancer), he always plays for Canada in international competitions.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, our dear Freddie would go off and play for Canada, I well remember that from when he was with the Braves! Here's the thing, I didn't say this but Freddie is such a NICE GUY. There, he makes millions and is a great first baseman, but he is NICE and that's all that matters to me. (Of course, there is that CANADA connection! LOL).
DeleteHi Kay! Wonderful post. I didn't watch the game but my husband told me all about the last inning - keep your eye on the ball indeed! I loved the Chas and Dave video, and Pearle Peterson was great singing our National Anthem. And I am happy to know how the Dodgers got their name; I'm going to share that with my hubby, I don't think he knows. Have a lovely weekend, Kay.
ReplyDeleteHey! So nice to see your comment here! Glad you liked the videos that I shared and I am tickled that you will tell your hubby about the Dodgers name. Maybe you should save it when you are doing a Trivia game and he will be so surprised and happy if you get that question and you know the answer. Take care and come see me again! x
DeleteYes, oh yes! Pearle sang the Star Spangled Banner absolutely beautifully. Art was watching the game and when the the Dodgers looked like they would definitely lose, he turned the TV off and we had dinner. When he found out they'd won, he couldn't believe it and watched the game later. That was pretty darn shocking.
ReplyDeleteAh, that is sports for you- it ain't over til it's OVER!! LOL!!
DeleteNot only does this young lady have a beautiful, warm, full voice, she also does not appear at all nervous - facing that stadium full of people with calm smile, and then she just... sings!!
ReplyDeleteEven to a non-US citizen like me, this was very touching.
I agree that there is a lot of wisdom in (some) cartoons, especially in the Peanuts.
There have been so many BAD renditions of our National Anthem, it was so nice to hear one that I liked.
DeleteWow she has a GREAT voice - Pearle. I assume the Dodgers are your team! lol
ReplyDeleteI have voted and am praying!
Ha ha, well, you know I am a BRAVES fan! Having said that, I do enjoy a good baseball game but honestly, either the Yankees or Dodgers could have won and it wouldn't have mattered to me. The announcers were going on and on about Ohtani and Betts and not saying much at all about Freddie and then, he is the one was the STAR!
DeleteThat is the best rendition of the National Anthem that I have heard in oh so long. Before they were the Trolley Dodgers they were known as the Bridegrooms. Six of their players married in the off-season. It's funny how nicknames stick.
ReplyDeleteI didn't mention it but since you have here, I can also say that before they were the Dodgers they were... The Atlantics, The Bridegrooms, The Superbas and The Robins! Wish they could have kept the Brooklyn Robins. I really like that!
DeleteHi Kay! Thanks for stopping at my blog.
ReplyDeleteWe aren't baseball people, so didn't see this game - but I sure enjoyed that National anthem and the info on the Dodgers name. :)
Peanuts is always good!
I love that you married your English pen pal. We have a niece who married a guy she met in Romania. They live in the US now and have 3 kids. He's a great guy.
We've never been in GA but will be in Northern GA vacationing in a week. :)
Oh my goodness, I wonder where you will be in North Georgia? I was born in Toccoa, Georgia which is in the Northeast corner of Georgia. (Well, down a bit from the corner but you get my meaning!) And thanks for your comment! Have fun in Georgia!
DeleteI was happy to see the Dodgers win the world series, since they had to beat my Mets to get there. It took them 6 games to beat the Mets and only 5 to beat the Yanks. Freddie Freeman has always given the Mets a hard time both as a Brave, and now as a Dodger.
ReplyDeleteOh my, I hope that you remember the days of the Atlanta Braves when Chipper Jones was around! The Mets fans would always yell "Larry" when he came to bat! It was pretty funny. In Shea Stadium, you could hear all the insults yelled during the game. I kinda miss that! Didn't mind it at all really, especially if the Braves won! LOL!!
DeleteCongratulations to the Dodgers, they played great ball.
ReplyDeleteI remember that Peanuts comic, and like you, I'm not sure which characters were in it, but that response stuck with me, as did seeing tears in the eyes of a cheerleader once after her team lost as the whoops and yells of the winning team could be heard in the background.
I do love a well played baseball game! So glad you remember that cartoon also! It's quite often the case that I can't remember names and details but the general idea, I can keep that in my head!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great voice! So confident and so beautiful. It was an exciting year for baseball here in Ohio too. It's too bad that that player won't ever forgive himself. I'm sure he wishes they had won but hey, there's always next year!
ReplyDeleteHey Yaya! I knew you would love that National Anthem too. That's always true about our baseball, there's always next year!
