Home Grown Tomatoes

Remember my post from June when I went to Tallulah Falls and visited the shop at the top of the gorge?  There was a man there selling boiled peanuts and he also had some tomatoes growing behind his small building.  When my sister and I admired them, he told us that there were two things that money couldn't buy...true love and home grown tomatoes.   Richard and I are able to grow small cherry tomatoes but those big tomatoes in my photo above are from a friend's garden.  I am wishing you all home grown tomatoes!
They are wonderful! Nothing better than a simple tomato sandwich...you can keep your true love! HA!

Recipe:  2 slices bread
2 tomato slices (if tomato large enough, one slice)
                mayonnaise
                 salt and pepper

                    That's it!

Next recipe:  Banana Sandwich!   Bread, mayo, and banana. WHAT? You have never had a banana sandwich?  Okay, go make one and eat it....I'll wait. There, see how good I am in the kitchen?

P.S.  If you don't have banana, you can use pineapple!

My friends, I hope you are all doing well.  I have just received some sad news. I found out that one of my former co-workers died in July.  She worked at our company for a year and I saw her every day while she was there. Although she was not in my department, she was close enough to me that I heard her voice every working day and was able to stop and make jokes with her now and then.  I can still hear her booming laugh.  So grateful that we shared that deep laughter together.

    1. Be open to those sandwiches. I think you will like them. If you like you have some cheese with your pineapple too, but just make sure the pineapple is cold. It's really good when it's hot.

  4. Sorry to hear a former colleague of yours has died.
My parents have pots of tomato plants on their balcony, and my Dad is like a child - he can't wait for them to ripen properly, but keeps picking them as soon as they so much as start turning orange!

    1. You can put your orange tomatoes on your window sill and wait for them to ripen, but watch them, you wouldn't want to lose any if they get TOO ripe!
My friend from work was so full of life and was the same age as my baby sister, so she seemed very young to me. Besides, she looked much younger than she was, another reason to be surprised by her death.

  6. No doubt about it, good home grown tomatoes are the best. My mother loved a tomato sandwich all her life, and I have tomato most days. Many store bought ones are rather tasteless but we have no success growing them. Well done you! We often have a banana sandwich, but I have never heard of adding mayo - maybe I'll give it a try one day. So sorry to hear of the loss of your colleague: it always comes as a shock, and is sad to be faced with the fragility of life.

    1. Oh yes, just slather some mayo on bread and slice your bananas on there! I think you would like it.
It was quite a shock to learn of her death. My heart goes out to her family and close friends.

    1. My husband can't have sandwiches either (he has celiac disease and can only eat gluten free bread). When I say I enjoy these sandwiches, I am only speaking for myself!
A joyful lady! That describes her perfectly. Thank you for that description, my Georgia friend. xxx

A BLT in the summer is just the best!

  9. Nothing better than homegrown tomatoes. Ours are done here (it's too hot now) and although we will get a second batch by late September, they're not quite as good as the first spring ones.

    1. Those tomatoes that are green at the end of the summer? Pick them and dip them in corn meal or flour and fry them. Fried green tomatoes. Think about it, that must be how that came about, the early colonists didn't want to waste food. That is how I think they came about!

  10. I am sorry you had this sad news. You seem to have good memories of this person. Sharing laughter is a blessing.
Oh, I love ripe home grown tomatoes but since I no longer have a vegetable garden and am remarkably unsuccessful at growing them on the deck, I am just glad we have farmers markets these days.

    1. We only grow our banana peppers and cherry tomatoes in giant pots! So, I bet you could also do that on your deck. (It does require massive watering and propping up of tomato vines and pepper plant branches!)
Sharing of laughter is a blessing! That is a lovely thought, thank you. x

  11. Fresh tomatoes! Yes, wonnnnderful!!! We don't try to grow them anymore, and the weather has make everything late. Hope to get some fresh tomatoes, at a farm stand, today!

To add to the unique sandwich ideas.

Ever try a Bacon and Peanut Butter Sandwich????? Try it! You will be in love.

Next door son/family did not keep bacon in house. Oldest grand son loved them. Would come over and have "Pop" make him one. So we began giving him, a package of bacon, at Christmas Time! A joke. So he could make his own, at home. Fun memory.

  14. Home-grown tomatoes are so juicy and so sweet...and, particularly home-grown cherry tomatoes. Delicious!

It's sad to lose a friend...but it is good to have the happy memories to hold on to; and hold on to them I know you will.

  16. Dear Kay, in May one of my dearest friends died; then in June, another died. So I know a little of what you are feeling at the loss of your coworker. I hope the memories you have of the laughter the two of you shared will comfort you.

And . . . I LOVE tomato and mayo sandwiches . . . and peanut butter and banana. I need to try the banana and mayo! Peace.

AND pineapple with mayo. Both are good!

  17. I like my tomato sandwiches made with butter rather than mayo, and salt but no pepper. Tomatoes are almost the only thing I like to add salt to. As for bananas... when I was a child, mashed banana sandwiches were all the rage at children's parties, but a few years ago I went to a barbecue where the host had wrapped peeled bananas in bacon and cooked them on the grill. It tasted much better than we expected! x
