One of my earliest memories is going to the little store overlooking Tallulah Gorge. I went there recently and went back to this same shop. (I took a photo of the gorge looking down from this point and if you remember my earlier post, we hiked further into the gorge which is on the other side.)
We went a few days ago close to this same area for a memorial service for my uncle. He very often would have nicknames for his nieces and nephews and most likely for any other children that he knew! He was very funny and had a very gentle, teasing manner about him. One of the names that he liked to use was "Sally Goodin.". Can you believe it, I just thought to put that into a search engine and I had no idea that it was a song! And then, to think that John Denver even mentions it in his "Thank God, I'm A Country Boy Song"! (Remember this line..."I'd play Sally Goodin all day if I could but the Lord and my wife wouldn't take it very good.)
Looky here, I managed to find a version that you can sing along with!
Seeing this wooden box where you could return your empty glass coke bottles brings back memories. (And never mind it says "Pepsi", we always called any dark soda drink a "coke". We just did!)
Now, just give me some boiled peanuts and I will be happy!
What, you have never had boiled peanuts! That will have to be for another post! My uncle deserves a better tribute than Sally Goodin and boiled peanuts but knowing him, this might not be too far off the mark. He did love to laugh.
Loved your post, Kay! Had a sing-a-long and now can appreciate John Denver's song a little more.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Paul. Just thinking of my uncle and this is what came to me, I only found out the Sally Goodin song when typed in the name in a search engine. The things I don't know!
DeleteKay, My siblings and I called it all pop. Now I call it soda . There was a little pop bottling company in our hometwon. It was called Ertel's. They had pop of every color and flavor. I always loved reaching into the icy water of the pop machine....I dreamed of drinking every flavor the Ertel's company made. Blessings to you, xoxo, Susie
ReplyDeleteWe had a coca cola bottling company in our little town and we would be tickled to see CONYERS GA stamped on the bottom! Blessings to you, Susie and hug your Teddy bear for me. xx
DeleteI've always loved boiled peanuts ever since I was a little girl. When I had my greengrocery/health food shop back in the early 80s I used to boil and roast peanuts for sale in the store. I also do same still, here at home, for myself. Love both boiled and roasted peanuts...home-cooked!
ReplyDeleteLove that piece of music, too. A bit of blue grass twang is always welcome with me! :)
I gave a list of some of my favourite songs in a post on my blog last week...I emphasise "some"...because the list is a mere tip of the iceberg!
I like them roasted too but boiled, that has to be my favorite!
DeleteIf I did a list of my favorite songs, why that would be a post that would be way too long! xx
Such a fun song! Your uncle sounds like he was a fine man, my condolences for your loss.
ReplyDeleteThank you, I am afraid I am not very good at writing tributes in honor of someone. I have read other posts from bloggers and they are very moving.
DeleteWe used to put salted peanuts into our bottles of RC Cola. When I lived in Tennessee Coke was still called Co-cola.
ReplyDeleteGoodness me, we said Co Cola too, I thought everybody did! HA!
DeleteI did see folks putting peanuts into the bottles of Coke/ Dr. Pepper/RC Cola, etc...I never did, afraid I would miss a peanut, I guess!
I know that line from John Denver so I knew "Sally Goodin" was a song but thanks for the video so now I can hear the tune!
ReplyDeleteStick with me Kiddo and we will learn every song in the world!
DeleteOr close to it anyway!
I am sorry for the loss of your uncle. But your memories show he was the kind of man who will stay with you all your life. I like this song and am surprised I never heard it before. Thanks for the video.
ReplyDeleteOh thank you very much. As I have said, I am sorry that I can't write when it comes to a loss. I try my best.
DeleteGlad you liked the song.
I, too, am sorry for the loss of your uncle. Was he your Dad's brother? That would explain his sense of humour!
ReplyDeleteMy Grandpa was a bit like that, he had nicknames for almost everyone, and my Mum and I seem to have inherited the habit, maybe not as strongly as his was.
Boiled peanuts - the first and only time I had them was in 1999, during my (so far) one and only holiday in the US (Florida). I liked them, but I remember how tired and weary the elderly couple looked who were selling them by the roadside.
They had a very similar sense of humor, my Dad and my uncle!
DeleteBut Joe was my mother's little brother and he was much younger than my Dad. Still, they were good friends and they often talked on the phone together.
Boiled peanuts are often sold by the roadside. They smell so good!
what a lovely water fall and wonderful memories of your uncle. When we die that is all I would like to be know for is I could make people smile.
ReplyDeleteCathy
That is a wonderful thought, to know that we have made people smile. Thank you for that!
DeleteThat waterfall...as I told you, one of my earliest memories and it is a good one!
Hi Kay - never had boiled peanuts ... sorry about your uncle - but can quite see he'd been "amusin'" all along - great song Sally Goodwin ... cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteHe was quite "amusin"!
DeleteAnd you should try boiled peanuts. Look out for my future post!
Love your photos of the old store. Than has to be my kind of an old store!
ReplyDeleteAnd those things they have around, like the old Pepsi bottles and case, could "bring a pretty penny," if some Pickers came around. :-)
That waterfall must be magnificent. I love a waterfall!!!! But could never hike there.
Sweet memories of your uncle. He must have been a Joy.
Thank you wisps of words!
DeleteThe old wooden boxes must surely be worth some money now.
I forget how many steps down it was into the gorge but I made it!
And my uncle was a sweet kind man. Thank you.
Ooops, boiled peanuts. Never had 'em. But heard about them, before, from another Southerner.
ReplyDeleteWe do love our boiled peanuts!
DeleteWhat a wonderful post! Life is all about memories, how could we survive without them.
ReplyDeleteThank you! We can never wear out our good memories.
DeleteI never had boiled peanuts.
ReplyDeleteThen come on down South, brother! I will make sure and buy you some!
DeleteSorry for the loss of your Uncle, but great memories here.
ReplyDeleteTake Care
All the best Jan
Thank you, Jan. Just a few thoughts here but I am hopeful that if his sons and grandsons ever see this post, they will know that I was thinking of them and the loss of losing a Dad and Granddad.
DeleteDear Kay, having someone in your life who loved to life and made others laugh also was a great blessing. Thank you for sharing your uncle with us. Peace.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your kind words. My Dad was a lot like Joe, so I am thinking of him too. A great blessing. Peace be with you always. x
DeleteIt's good to revisit old memories now and again. Something special usually happens.
ReplyDeleteMemories! I must have a lot of them now, so no room for new passwords or dates that I must remember. Memory full.
DeleteAll my years of listening to John Denver, loving his music and being made fun of because I love his music, I never knew what "Sally Goodin" was! Thanks for sharing that and I'm sorry for the loss of your Uncle. He sounds like a great man. My hubby LOVES boiled peanuts. His Mom was from Florida and a true southern gal. Yep, I remember Jack telling me that coke was a standard name for all dark soda.
ReplyDeleteI know, I love John Denver too but never thought about what that line from that song meant! Guess what else I looked up...I found a recipe how we can make our own boiled peanuts, so look out for another post about them! Tell Jack I bet we could sit a spell and swap some stories, all about the South! :-) Of course, I daresay you and I could talk up a storm also! xx Take care, my friend.
DeleteWhat a toe tapping swinging song!
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend!
hughugs
I treasure a memory of going to see a gospel singing with my Dad and as a very lively hymn started up, he and I started toe tapping at exact same time! If my uncle had been there, he would have too!
DeleteI'm sorry for your loss. You have fun memories of him. I love the flag- I'm going to save that shot so I can figure out how to make it! Have a blessed day!
ReplyDeleteI liked that flag very much too. Make me one!
