I've been thinking of this song lately...I am sure you must know it too. "Turn! Turn! Turn!" is a song that was written by Pete Seeger in the late 1950's but was a big hit for the Byrds in 1965. Interesting to note that the words to this song are almost word for word from the Bible (King James) from Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. At the end of the song, after it says "a time for peace", it then says, "I swear it's not too late". So, that last line and the "turn, turn, turn" line...they are the only words from Pete Seeger, all the rest is from the book of Ecclesiastes! (Of course, the words are re-arranged a bit, but all are from the Bible.)
I am sure you all must know this but as I say, this song has been in my mind this week, so I wanted to share it here.
Hope you are all doing well and getting through this winter. Take care, my blogging buddies! I keep hoping to get back to my blogging which I enjoy so very much. Thank you for being my friends out there in this world, you know who you are!
A rock outcrop at Panola Mountain State Park on a rare day that we were able to walk there.
I’m slowly getting back to blogging again. I have most of my chores done at last!
ReplyDeleteNo, I didn’t know that about that song. That is so interesting. I used to love that song when I was in college.
Hey Kay! So nice to see your comment here! Hope you and Art and your dear mother are all doing well. Happy to remind you of this song. x
DeleteThat is a lovely song and Pete Seeger is an accomplished singer and activist.
ReplyDeleteAND songwriter too! :-)
DeleteI've liked this song since it first reached the hit parade in the 60s!
ReplyDeleteAh, the 1960's, when you couldn't wait from week to week to hear the music. Am I right?
DeleteI am hoping this season turns a little quicker. Very cold and snowy
ReplyDeleteCathy
In Georgia, it has been the grey skies and rain for us. Lately, we have had some sunny days, quite cold, but sunny. The sun is so welcome!!
DeleteIs anything wrong, Kay? Or did you just mean the weather? Around 10 below just now here!! That's alright with me. It is winter in NH after all!! I did know that about the song. I do so love it.
ReplyDeleteOh, been going through some tough times lately but things seem to be getting better. 10 below? Good reason to do some of your great baking! Of course you would know the background of the song and I knew you would love it. xx
DeleteI have loved this song since it first came out, Kay! It always reminds me to keep things in perspective, so it is comforting. Whenever I'm in a rough patch, I try to remember "this, too, shall pass." I've been trying to get back into a routine with my blogging, too. I miss all my blogging buddies when I get out of touch. I think of you often, and I'm sending you a big hug!
ReplyDeleteI am accepting your big hug and sending you one right back! A rough patch, yes that is what it sometimes feels like that we are in and we must remember to keep our chins up and carry on with grace and humor. Stay well, my friend. Build a snowman for me! x
DeleteI was born in 1968 and so must have known this song more or less all my life. Yes, it is taken directly from the Bible, and the words can be particularly poignant when we are in a situation where things in our life could be about to change... for the better or the worse.
ReplyDeleteLike you, I miss blogging when I can not read and write as much as I would like to, and I am so grateful for the friends I have made through it!
I am grateful for my blogging friends, and of course, it is YOU that I must thank for getting me to start my blog! Goodness, me it was in August of 2011 when I first started this little blog.
DeleteI do very much enjoy it. Thank you. xx
Hi Kay - the song has a fascinating history ... good to read about it again. Take care ... and I'll be back soon - cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteHello Hilary! So happy to see your comment here! Hope you are doing well out west!
DeleteThere is truly a time and season for everything in life. Even winter had its values. Hope you are having a good week. It's crazy weather days here for us. Below freezing one day and rain the next.
ReplyDeleteLove,
'ma'
I just commented today how lovely the bare branches looked on all the oak trees here in our area, a beauty that not everyone notices! We have had crazy rain but it is sunny now, thank goodness! Love to you MA! Look on the bright side, always! xx
DeleteThis is the first time that I listen Turn * 3! Thanks...
ReplyDeleteOh! Then, I hope that you will like the song! Thank you.
DeleteIt's a lovely song, and your monadnock pictures are always beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThank you! (And I am sorry that the Saints lost in the playoffs.)
DeleteI was a sophomore in college when this came out. The times were very chaotic. Somehow, though, they felt a bit more hopeful then now. Or perhaps it was that I was on what my husband used to call "the uphill slope of life". But this song spoke to us all, the people in my generation. And I am so glad you are getting to hike on your favorite mountains from time to time.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Kristi! I have many songs that are stored away in my brain and they come out sometimes, to comfort me and to help me through something that is going on in my life! And Richard and I try to walk as much as possible, we are grateful that we are near such natural beauty. x
DeleteI have always loved that song. Sam Cooke sang A Change is Gonna Come and John Lennon sang Imagine. Of course we have to work for it but things will always change.
ReplyDeleteOh! I was just singing "A Change Is Gonna Come" just recently! It is such an amazing song! (Imagine is a great song too, but somehow, that seems sad to me, perhaps it is the music.)
DeleteSimilar to Emma Springfield....I've always loved this song. And during the early to mid-Sixties Pete Seeger was very popular with my group of friends and me. Folk music played a huge part in our lives back in those wonderful years.
ReplyDeleteI hope all is well with you, Kay...take good care. It is hellishly hot here at present...and I hate it!!
Just read about the record breaking heat in Australia and I thought of you! Stay cool!
DeleteThe 1960's, always good to bring that music back to folks! x
One of my favorite songs and I'm ready for this season to change! More snow and bitter cold heading our way next week. Now, I'm not a winter hater, but for some reason I'm just not into it this year! Anyway, have a good weekend!
ReplyDeleteIt is a grey day here today but they promise us almost 60 for tomorrow..but then, Tuesday we will get some snow! Already looking forward to Spring. Take care and stay warm!
DeleteIt will come as no surprise to you that I didn't know the song. Your memory for them never ceases to astonish me. May your winter be short and your summer long. Your Blogland friends will always be here.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if my knowledge of songs pushes everything else out of my brain! That might be my problem in life. Thank you, my Blogland friend! Take care and tell your brother and our special friend on your same island that I said hello!
DeleteThanks for reminding me of that song. It meant a lot to me in the mid-sixties and it means a lot now.."I swear it's not too late!"
ReplyDeleteHello. YP. So nice to see your comment here. Peace to you.
DeleteThis is an amazing song! Thanks for sharing!
