I Dream of England (And New Luggage!)

I dreamed that I was in England...but then, I woke up.
So, I just went back in time and looked at some photos.
Hope you like these too!

Never fear, my trusty American Tourister carry on will be ready when I am!  I received this as a high school graduation present in 1975.  They don't make luggage like this anymore!  Like me, it's not old, it's VINTAGE!
Am I the only one who holds on to old things because I am so cheap thrifty?
Come on, tell me something that you have that is older than this golden carry-on bag!

  1. Great pictures, Kay! And for me, only another two months until I'll be starting my annual Yorkshire holiday :-)
Like you, I rather use my old things until they fall apart before I get anything new. I just feel attached to them and don't see the point in chucking them out while they are still perfectly alright for their purpose. The oldest things in my flat are probably my living room cabinets (from 1935 when my grandparents married) and the cutlery and plates I use every day (same time, same source).

    1. No need to chuck them out while they are still useful!
Having said that, I am at such an age that a bag on wheels is looking mighty tempting!
Since I can't go to England this year, I will be looking forward to your photos of Yorkshire! I've wanted to go there since I first read "All Creatures Great and Small"!

  2. I have many things that are older than that, but not any luggage! I have things from my mother and from my grandmother that are older....In 1975 I was 30 years old and having my first child, my dear daughter Alice. I have some things from my first apartment in 1966 and many many books that are older than that and which I have had since I was a child. I love old things and probably should get rid of some of them - what my daughter Emily calls "blessing other people with your stuff".

    1. Let's see, I have ONE book that was given to me when I was eight years old...it was a mystery book for children that a neighbor gave to me for helping her with her baby. It meant so much to me that I put into a keepsake drawer!
Blessing other people with your stuff! I love that, it's sweet and also, must be true!

  3. Love your golden bag, and it still looks like Perfection. An antique shop near me actually had one for sale this week. Obviously they last forever. Well, I have a few things here that age or older, including some of my daughter's baby things (she was born in 1974). No luggage though - these days it only lasts about seven international flights and they're done!

    1. I know what you mean about how rough they are on luggage on international flights! Maybe when I want another bag, I could sell it on EBAY and make some money off of it!
      :-)

  4. Grandma's old Samsonite is still in perfectly good working order, and i still use it. She got it as a high school graduation gift. It's a three piece set, the small case for toiletries, the large square suitcase and the large round suitcase, all hard sided, in white. Remember those? They hold up forever!

Hope you do get to go to England soon!

    1. I think my mother might have had a set like that, hardsided and quite sturdy.
I hope to get to England in spring of 2018, but that is a year away!!

  5. Strawberries without cream? What kind of travesty is this? I do hold on to some older things, but I don't think I have anything that predates 1975. My dad does though, obviously.

    1. I took a photo of the strawberries as they looked as I bought them, with their perfect green strawberry tops, just perfect. They were labeled with the name of the farmer in Kent where they had been grown!
Anyone reading this, if you are ever in England, buy yourself some strawberries and as Mark as told you above, wash them, and put them in a bowl and put CREAM on top of them and EAT THEM! They are wonderful.
      Thanks, Mark!

  7. I too got luggage for a graduation gift. It was a 3 piece set and Yes it is probably older than yours. I graduated in '62. I still have 2 of the 3 pieces left. They used to make things that last and last...

    1. Ha! That's funny you say that, I said to Richard and I think I might have been the ONLY one on the plane that CARRIED my bag onto the flight! As I age, the thought of wheeling my bag around carries great appeal!

  11. I had a Rolf wallet that I used for nearly 30 years. I bought it with earnings I made working in a beauty parlor. Lol! That's what we used to call them back in the 70's.

    1. Beauty Parlor...HA! Don't tell anyone but I have to stop myself calling them that, I want to say Beauty Parlor or Beauty Shop. I still call my handbag a "pocketbook" though. I am a certain age! LOL

  12. It is so true that everything was made with better quality in the "old days" but I need to think about specific items to answer your question. I am sure you do dream of England since you have such a connection. I dream about it and have only that once-in-a-lifetime trip for wonderful memories. Glad my husband took over 3000 pictures! 1. Forgot to add - I graduated high school in 1976 but you look a LOT younger than I do!! I am going to blame those early years on the farm LOL

    2. You know, I have spent more of my spare time in England than anywhere else! And since my husband and inlaws are from there, I have a strong connection.
I look younger than you? Only from the flattering photos that Richard takes of me, I have never been called younger than I am, but thanks anyway! LOL.

  13. Nice contrast between the shingle beach and the green fields. I'm very thrifty when it comes to items. If it still works and does a good job its with me for life. As you say, modern items have a deliberate short shelf life so you'll buy another one.

    1. The beach and the green fields are from the same place, Eastbourne! I am still using my hair curling set from 1984. It was made in DENMARK, so they must know how to make things that last!

I love that you still have bag they certainly don't make things they way they used to. Your pics of England are lovely.
