Give Me A Break! (Kit Kat and Toblerone)
Recently, my step-Mom was in the hospital. When I arrived there with my Dad to visit her, I looked around for a wheelchair for him.
(It's a large hospital and I knew it would be quite a walk to her room.)
A young man was walking out the door just as we arrived and when he saw me looking around...he came back into the building and asked if we needed any help. When he saw my Dad and I told him of our need, he straightaway went around the corner and brought to us the most beautiful brand new wheelchair for my Dad! Daddy was really moved by this kind gesture.
I knew I didn't have any cash on me...but I very much wanted to give him something! I looked into my bag, and there was a small Kit Kat bar that I had been saving, the very last one that I had brought back from England! I reached into my purse and said, "Oh, this is just a little thing, but it is a Kit Kat bar that I bought when I was in England. Here, I hope you like it!"
He smiled and took the Kit-Kat!
Hey, it was only a small chocolate bar but it was ENGLISH chocolate and the chocolate from there is very, very good. Honest!
Here's the rest of the story... when we were in my step-mom's hospital room later, the same man came into her room ...and he was her nurse! It is a small world, isn't it?
Oh! And I forgot to say, a few days later, Richard surprised me by telling me that he had found an English Kit Kat bar in our kitchen!
(I must have put it down by the microwave and forgotten about it and it somehow got pushed to the side.) So, it was really the penultimate Kit Kat bar that the male nurse received as a thank you!
P.S. I always make sure I bring back custard creams and Mars bars from England, they are my favorites!

Nice story!
ReplyDeleteI thought you would say a "sweet" story! :-)
DeleteCast your bread upon the waters ... or in this case, your Kit Kat. :)
ReplyDeleteOh, yes, English chocolates are the best! Lion Bar, Aero, Yorkie, Maltesers ... dang I'm getting hungry. Violet Crumble is also very good, though it's Australian and not English. What a fun post. I hope the nurse fully appreciated that Kit Kat!
When I talked with him later, he told me that he DID appreciate it! And your list has made me hungry too. x
DeleteHow nice of the nurse, and i'm glad you found the extra chocolate! Do your in-laws ever mail you care packages?
ReplyDeleteYou know, they would if I asked them but we go so often and our son also, that we always bring back sweets and tea to last for a while!
DeleteWhat a lovely story, and I am sure the nurse enjoyed the Kit Kat. We like them too. Obviously your are a discerning traveller, as finding and bringing home the chocolate is definitely part of travel for us too :)
ReplyDeleteTea and chocolate! I didn't say, but much of that in the photo was for our son, and for friends and family. We only kept some of it!
DeleteI'd take a Kit Kat as a tip any day!
ReplyDeleteI will remember that! :-)
DeleteGerman choccies aren't half bad, either, Kay - I must send you some one day so that you can have a private little tasting :-)
ReplyDeleteBut like you, I love the chocolates in England. My favourite is Cadbury's, and I am hoping to find some of it in the Christmas parcel my Yorkshire family usually send over.
When I say chocolate, that also goes for biscuits covered in chocolate!!(HERZEN!) And when I say chocolates in England, they are usually English chocolates but as you see, I also have Toblerone here and that is from Switzerland, of course.
DeleteI also love Cadbury's...love the Cadbury's Roses!
We do have good candy. It's always good to get on the right side of your step-mom's nurse too. There must be websites where you can buy that stuff but I guess it's expensive. The websites that allow me to import American foods can be pretty expensive.
ReplyDeleteYou are correct, it can be ordered but WAY too expensive for me! What American foods would you import? Just curious!
DeleteThey say that what goes around comes around as did your kit kat. Cute story and moral too!
ReplyDeleteThanks, it tickled me to see the young man was my step mom's nurse! :-)
DeleteAw, what a nice story! I'd be very happy to be tipped with chocolate :)
ReplyDeleteHey! You and Debra both! You Canadians, you are just so doggone easy going! :-)
DeleteWhat a sweet story.... I had no idea that Chocolate from England was SO good.... I'm not much of a chocolate-person --but we do eat a square of Dark Chocolate each day for our health.... I also like a good cup of Cocoa every once in awhile.
ReplyDeleteHope your Step Mother is okay... Sounds like you take good care of your Dad.. That must be a good hospital!!!!!!
Merry Christmas.
Hugs,
Betsy
The milk chocolate in England is AMAZING! I can say no to chocolate here but in England, it is much harder!!
DeleteIt is a very nice hospital but still, not one that I hope that I have to visit anytime soon...I mean I hope good health for my DAd and step mom both!
Thanks very much for your comment, Betsy Adams! And I wish you a very merry Christmas too! x
I have read that chocolate from Europe is better than the milk chocolate we have available here. I prefer dark chocolate anyway and that is what they say is more like European chocolate. This was a caring story.
ReplyDeleteI really need to do a post about chocolate itself, there is quite the story about the difference between American and English chocolate. Having said that, I am not a chocolate snob, I have been known to eat a Hershey's Kiss and at Halloween, I realized that Tootsie Rolls are still very acceptable to me!
DeleteWe have Kit Kats here, too - and Mars Bars. I'm sure the young nurse appreciated your gesture. :)
ReplyDeleteYou kick-started the sleuth within me, so I went sniffing around and below is what I found!
Here's a bit of info on Kit Kats for you, Kay.......https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kit_Kat
And as far as Mars Bars are concerned...
"A US Mars bar - The worldwide Mars bar differs from that sold in the US.[9] The American version was discontinued in 2002[10] and was replaced with the slightly different Snickers Almond featuring nougat, almonds, and a milk chocolate coating. Unlike the American Mars bar, however, Snickers Almond also contains caramel.[10] The US version of the Mars bar was relaunched in January 2010 and is initially being sold on an exclusive basis through Walmart stores. The European version of the Mars bar is also sold in some United States grocery stores. It was once again discontinued at the end of 2011.[citation needed]
The British and Canadian Mars bars are very similar to the United States Milky Way bar, which Mars, Inc. produced (not to be confused with the European version of Milky Way, which is similar to the United State."
Yes, the Mars Bar in the USA is the one with almonds, but as you say, it was changed a bit after 2000. And the Mars bar in England is much like the Milky Way bar in America. However, the American chocolate is different...it just is, I promise you!
DeleteSo thanks for having this info on here for folks to read!
One thing, about the Kit Kat bar...I found the following information - Kit Kat Milk Chocolate is made for the North American market with the controversial ingredient PGPR (polyglycerol polyricinoleate, E476, aka Palsgaard 4150),[37] which is used as a replacement for cocoa butter.[38] The FDA has determined it to be "safe for humans as long as you restrict your intake to 7.5 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. Otherwise you'd be open to reversible liver enlargement at higher intakes".
Charming! I think I will only eat Kit Kats from England!
That last statement you posted re the PGPR is very worrying! Why, oh, why, would they still be using it?? It beggars belief, that's for sure!
DeleteMars Bars here in Australia are as shown in this site......

And some info on Aussie Milky Way bars-

And finally, not to overlook the Kit Kat!!m :)

There is so much in our foods in America that we most certainly should not be eating, but most of us don't know about what is in our food! One woman in North Carolina started a petition to get the yellow dye out of Kraft Mac & Cheese, and by great pressure, Kraft took it out! We could also talk about genetically modified foods and how they have always fought against them in the UK but people are just now talking about them in the USA. Too late now, almost all our foods are GM!
DeleteAnd Kit Kat, I had also read this about this lawsuit.
Cadbury's and Nestle...I found it funny that Cadbury's wanted to trademark their color purple!
What a wonderful exchange between you and that nurse. Your dad got a wheelchair, and the nurse got a nice chocolate bar from England.
ReplyDeleteI don't get out much, so sometimes you have to hear some of the little stories of my life! :-)
DeleteIt's good to hear a story about kindness.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I didn't say but the young nurse was already out of the building, going home after a long 12 hour shift and he took the time to come back in and get that wheelchair for my Dad. Kindness, indeed.
DeleteDelicious and too tempting!
ReplyDeleteLife is too short not to enjoy chocolate now and again! xx
DeleteNope, I think it was the Kit Kat fairy who put it there to reward you for giving yours away! One good turn deserves another and all that!
ReplyDeleteThat was nice all around! Good things came back to you.
ReplyDeleteI love those chocolate digestive biscuits - I used to get them at Publix, but they stopped carrying them. I guess I was the only one buying them. :)
'What goes around comes around' and all the similar statements do have a way of becoming true. It was very heart warming (as heart warming as chocolate) that the young man turned out to be your Mum's nurse.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice nurse you all had. Isn't it amazing how you find Kit Kats around the world? In Korean and Japan they have the most original flavors. Green tea, sweet potato, cherry, etc.
