Feeling Blue At Christmas/"Lucky Old Sun"

While many are happily preparing for Christmas holidays, there are also some who feel some sadness at this time of year. Perhaps there is some regret over the past year or it might be the first time that one will have a Christmas without a dear loved one.  We need to reach out to those who have this sadness.

One of my uncles died this past weekend and his memorial service was today.   Thinking of him, I know a song that somehow reminds me of him.  The lyrics of this song is by Haven Gillespie and he also happened to be the same man who wrote the words to "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town.".  This would have amused my uncle and he would have said, "Is that right?", with a twinkle in his eye.

This is for Douglas but I hope you like it too.  "That Lucky Old Sun" by Chris Isaak. And yes, I have had this on a post before but it just seems right as a tribute.   (You might have thought I would have "Blue Christmas" on here, but you should never expect the obvious from me!)

  1. I am sorry to learn of your loss. It is always hard to lose a loved one but it seems especially hard during the holidays. Lucky Old Son seems like a good choice to me.

    1. If you ever get the chance, you should watch "Scrooge", it was a musical from 1970, I think, with Albert Finney was Scrooge and the ghost of Christmas Present was Kenneth More...I love him making Scrooge drink the "milk of human kindness"! Watch it if you can, it's brilliant.

  6. I am sorry to hear about your uncle's death. What a nice tribute to him this post is! It is good to remember our loved ones who are not there anymore by linking what is happening in the present with how they would have reacted. I often wonder what Steve would have said to this or that, for instance how he would have reacted to Brexit, or Trump, or even to something like the latest Star Trek film.

    1. Thank you, Meike, I was unsure if I should post this but the song somehow felt just right so I am glad you think it was okay.
Yes, I often wonder what my grandmothers and grandfathers would think of things right now.

  9. I am sorry to hear of the loss of your Uncle Douglas. I can (so) relate to the glaring pain of family loss and unresolved issues that are (often) magnified by the holidays. Peace and joy (to ALL.) lg!

  11. Please accept my condolences for the loss of your uncle. Anyone who would say, "Is that right!" with a twinkle is a grand person to have around, and i know his loss will be keenly felt.

  12. Kay, I'm so sorry to hear about your uncle! It's always so hard when we lose loved ones. It was my uncles birthday today and as I talked to him on the phone (he lives in Germany), I was very aware how time passes for us all. Thinking of you!! Love, Silke

    1. Hello Silke!
Thank you and it is also hard when you lose a loved one and that loved one is in another country! Richard has had several who have passed away and he has not been able to go to the memorials and it is hard.
So happy for you, Silke that your art is becoming more and more recognized, just as it should be! Love, Kay

  13. My condolences at the loss of your uncle, Kay. This time of the years brings both sadness and joy. We have to try to concentrate on the joy, but at times it is difficult to do.

    Best wishes and thoughts.

  14. I can't believe I somehow remember hearing this song before. Sad and beautiful. I'm so sorry about your uncle, Kay. I lost my cousin in December, 2014 and then my favorite aunt in February 2015.I think she died of heartbreak. We had a pretty miserable Christmas last year. But this year... my grandson is coming... yay! The tree is up and ready for him. Life goes on, doesn't it?
