Music! I love it! Anyone who read my blog knows this, almost EVERYTHING reminds me of a song! I would find it impossible to choose ten favorite songs, but hey, that's just me! Apparently, they have asked the RELATIVES of Queen Elizabeth II for her favourite songs and according to an upcoming BBC Radio documentary on the Queen her favorite 10 pieces of music are as follows:
- Oklahoma! by Howard Keel
- Anything You Can Do (Annie Get Your Gun) by Dolores Gray and Bill Johnson
- Sing by Gary Barlow and the Commonwealth Band featuring the Military Wives
- Cheek to Cheek by Fred Astaire
- The White Cliffs Of Dover by Vera Lynn
- Leaning on a Lamp-post by George Formby
- Praise, My Soul, The King Of Heaven (hymn)
- The Lord is My Shepherd (hymn)
- Lester Lanin Medley
- Regimental March Milanollo
Here is my question for you: how many of these do you know? I know all of them except the last two!
I have mentioned Vera Lynn in a post before (and the song that I spoke of was "We'll Meet Again".) I have also written of Chas and Dave, and they do a wonderful rendition of "Leaning On A Lamp Post".
"Oklahoma" was written by Rodgers and Hammerstein, of course, and I have written of my love for their music too!
It amuses me to think of the Queen singing "Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better". I mean, come on, it's the QUEEN! (And if you don't know the musical, "Annie Get Your Gun", then, look it up, it's not only good but very funny too!)
The hymn," Praise My Soul, The King of Heaven" was written by Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847) It was the processional song used at the Queen's wedding on November 20, 1947, which was exactly one hundred years after the death of the writer of this song.
I have a great fondness for all songwriters but most especially for those who write beautifully written hymns. (He also wrote the hymn "Abide With Me".) If you would like to know more about Henry Francis Lyte then, please click on the following...Henry Francis Lyte. And you SHOULD want to know more about him, be sure and read his life story!
I found this song for you which was recorded at Westminster Abbey...and you must know that is where the Queen and Prince Phillip were married in 1947!
Please notice that it seems that no one directly asked the Queen herself about her favorite music, I wonder if she would reply (with a twinkle in her eye)..."That's easy, GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!" HA!
I am not familiar with number 9. The songs I know are all good ones. I like Leaning On The Lamp-Post as done by Herman's Hermits. I have seen the Queen wear hats with blue flowers so I am sure she likes them.
ReplyDeleteYou know, you can look up Chas and Dave on YouTube, and you should! We had a cassette tape of theirs when our son was growing up and we listened to them all the time! He grew up listening to them and none of his friends had ever heard of them!
DeleteSome of the song titles (and of course the singers/musicals etc.) do sound familiar, but I must admit I can not hum a tune to ANY of the 10 songs. The same would possibly be true if it were the other way round and I posted a list of songs well-known in my country :-)
ReplyDeleteLove the blue hydrangea!! And you look so happy in that picture - much happier than the Queen ever does, I suspect.
You can look the songs up on YouTube, if you want to! And I just bet the Queen is very different in her private life and most likely is very jolly and laughing all the time! Hey, maybe I AM royal, I always take up for the Queen! LOL!
DeleteI think they are very much the sort of things I would have imagined The Queen to have chosen. I like Praise My Soul too! I am sure that she loves blue flowers and all flowers.
ReplyDeleteI also believe that the Queen loves all flowers! She and I are on the same wavelength, don't you know. And so much, that I think she should loan me a tiara a two!
DeleteLooks like you made it to Hamilton Gardens! I recognize those hydrangeas and gate. Nice.
ReplyDeleteYes, we enjoyed it! And the hydrangeas were gorgeous. Maybe we will see each other there one day!
DeleteYes, I know most of those songs too. I have also read that the Queen and Prince Philip particularly like the song 'People will say we're in love', which is from the musical Oklahoma, and came out during their engagement. What a beautiful shade of blue in your flowers, and the colour suits you as well as it suits the Queen!
ReplyDelete"Don't throw bouquets at me, people will say we're in love"...such great lyrics, I ADORE Oscar Hammerstein!! And yes, that makes sense, she would know it from her engagement time! YES!! That blue, I love it so much, just as I love the bluebells in England! :-)
DeleteI didn't know all the songs, but I did get a laugh about the queen singing anything you can do I can do better. I've always admired her. The flowers pictured are beautiful !
ReplyDeleteHa! You might be the only one who gets my sense of humor!
DeleteYes, I love the Queen and she has no idea! :-)
Alas, I can only bring 4 of those songs to mind -- Oklahoma, Anything You Can Do, Cheek to Cheek, and the White Cliffs of Dover. The Queen and I have different tastes in music, LOL!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it funny though that they didn't really ask the Queen? You can just hear your relatives saying, "Oh yeah, Debra really likes KC and the Sunshine Band, and Captain and Tennille" and you would be like, "SAY WHAT< what year are you talking about?"
DeleteHA!!
I know the first five. The hydrangeas are just gorgeous this year aren't they!
ReplyDeleteI love hydrangeas in all shapes and forms!
DeleteLike you, i've heard all but the last two. If the list is accurate, she has great taste in music!
ReplyDeleteI wish we could hear this documentary here!
DeleteWhat, no Freddie Mercury?
ReplyDeleteAmalia
xo
Ha! Yes, I would love to hear the Queen sing "WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS, OF THE WORLD!" That would be great!
DeleteI only know a couple of those songs, but Oaklahoma! is my mum's favourite musical. They should have thrown some gag choices in there. I always suspected the queen was secretly a metalhead.
ReplyDeleteOKLAHOMA is OK!
DeleteHa, they could have had some fun with this, what if they told us she was into electronic music or hip hop. People would be saying...I'm sorry, what?
awesome
ReplyDeleteHey Shortybear!
DeleteLove your blog name, short and sweet!
Same as you Kay: all except the last two.
ReplyDeleteYou are my musical brother! :-)

I'm sure you do know these, Kay...you just didn't recognise the descriptions.
Her favourites are typical for her age...good on Liz. :)
Funny thing, I am not her age but I like the songs that she has here although I would not list them as my favorites but then, neither did she! HA!
ReplyDeleteAnd I do know many of the songs that were done by Lester Lanlin, and it seems that he was a famous American bandleader but honestly, I didn't know of him until I looked him up on YouTube. and you know I did!(I COULD have said I knew him but just being honest!)
And the last one, the marches by the Guards, I do recognize them too, being a woman with an English heart! :-)
Chances are, I know almost any tune.
I should play the game, "NAME THAT TUNE". LOL.
I didn't recognise the name Lester Lanlin, either, Kay! lol
DeleteI'm with you there. I knew them all except the last two.
ReplyDeleteYou cannot beat the old ones can you?
I am just catching up with your blog so must just say "Happy Anniversary" to you both. Better late than never hey?
