My Love May Still Shine Bright

How many couples do you know that met from writing letters? We still have most of them too. Therefore, the following sonnet by Shakespeare fits the occasion nicely.
Today is our 33rd wedding anniversary!  (We hope we will  be out and about, will tell you in a future post!)
Take care, my friends, we hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Sonnet  65: Since brass, nor stone, nor earth, nor boundless sea

Related Poem Content Details

Since brass, nor stone, nor earth, nor boundless sea
But sad mortality o’er-sways their power,
How with this rage shall beauty hold a plea,
Whose action is no stronger than a flower?
O, how shall summer’s honey breath hold out
Against the wrackful siege of batt’ring days,
When rocks impregnable are not so stout,
Nor gates of steel so strong, but time decays?
O fearful meditation! where, alack,
Shall time’s best jewel from time’s chest lie hid?
Or what strong hand can hold his swift foot back?
Or who his spoil of beauty can forbid?
O, none, unless this miracle have might,
That in black ink my love may still shine bright.

"Morning Has Broken" is a song that I asked our good friend, Mary  to play at our wedding on the piano.  The song was a big hit for Cat Stevens in the early 1970's but it is actually from a hymn with lyrics written by English author Eleanor Farjeon.

  1. Hello Kay G. Always good to hear from from you.
A very Happy Anniversary to you both!
Yes, love conquers all and what a beautiful sonnet to start this special day of yours.
This Cat Steven's piece was a 'ground changer' for me back in the early 70's......good to be reminded once again.

  3. Beautiful! How wonderful that you married your penpal, friends first, a good way to begin.

  4. Happy anniversary to you! It’s so lovely that the power of words with each other’s choice of words, punctuations, and tones made pen pals grow into partners in life.

  5. I knew a couple who met as penpals. He was a friend to my husband. She was from Scotland. I liked her from the first time I met her. Happy Anniversary to bot of you. I look forward to reading about your 66th. And by the way Morning Has Broken is a perfect choice for a wedding song.

    1. Well, the first 33 went by quickly enough! I thought the song was good for a wedding, but I must admit I had never heard it played at a wedding before or since.

  6. Happy Anniversary! Your love story should be preserved, maybe someday it would make a cool movie! Especially since kids these days would have no idea that such a thing could happen.

    1. Oh yes, let's get someone to make a movie of our lives, and they could hollywood it up and make it more interesting and exciting! Heck, might as well get a super model to play me...hey, you know that is how it could go! HA!

  7. Happy anniversary! Splendid Shakespeare. And we used to sing that hymn at school. It is I think an Irish tune, or at least it sounds like one! Eleanor Farjeon was a famous children's book writer in her day and is buried about a mile or so from my home.

    1. OH! I am glad that you told that she is buried near to where you live! St John at Hampstead Churchyard...is that correct? What a fascinating woman! And children's writers, they truly are my favorite.

  16. I remember the Cat Stevens song very well from my childhood!

Happy, happy, happy anniversary, dear Kay and Richard!

Steve and I met online, in a Star Trek themed chatroom... we weren't the only couple to find each other there, and get married, although the chatroom was never set up as a dating platform :-)
RJ and I met at a work-related event (called "IT Brunch"), were together for four years and are still the best of friends.
O.K. and I have indeed met through an online dating platform, so in a way you could say we started out by writing letters (although in electronic form), too.

    1. Thank you! And I think the online dating platform also counts as writing letters, it is all in written form, after all!

  25. Happy Anniversary! How sweet that you met while writing each other. My parents wrote back and forth during WWII and I'm getting Dad's letters to Mom written out for a book with pics to go with it. Fun to imagine them as young and in love! They didn't make it past 30yrs as Dad passed away in 1976. Mom just turned 90..long time to be away from your true love. May you have many more lovely anniversaries to celebrate!
