How many couples do you know that met from writing letters? We still have most of them too. Therefore, the following sonnet by Shakespeare fits the occasion nicely.
Today is our 33rd wedding anniversary! (We hope we will be out and about, will tell you in a future post!)
Take care, my friends, we hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Sonnet 65: Since brass, nor stone, nor earth, nor boundless sea

Since brass, nor stone, nor earth, nor boundless sea
But sad mortality o’er-sways their power,
How with this rage shall beauty hold a plea,
Whose action is no stronger than a flower?
O, how shall summer’s honey breath hold out
Against the wrackful siege of batt’ring days,
When rocks impregnable are not so stout,
Nor gates of steel so strong, but time decays?
O fearful meditation! where, alack,
Shall time’s best jewel from time’s chest lie hid?
Or what strong hand can hold his swift foot back?
Or who his spoil of beauty can forbid?
O, none, unless this miracle have might,
That in black ink my love may still shine bright.
"Morning Has Broken" is a song that I asked our good friend, Mary to play at our wedding on the piano. The song was a big hit for Cat Stevens in the early 1970's but it is actually from a hymn with lyrics written by English author Eleanor Farjeon.
Hello Kay G. Always good to hear from from you.
ReplyDeleteA very Happy Anniversary to you both!
Yes, love conquers all and what a beautiful sonnet to start this special day of yours.
This Cat Steven's piece was a 'ground changer' for me back in the early 70's......good to be reminded once again.
Hey Jim!
DeleteThank you! Glad you like this sonnet too and the song!
Such a romantic story is yours and Richard's! Have the most wonderful anniversary ever! You know how to make the most joyful life together!
ReplyDeleteAnd the funny thing, I am the least romantic woman you could ever meet! Thanks for your kind comment.
DeleteBeautiful! How wonderful that you married your penpal, friends first, a good way to begin.
ReplyDeleteFriends first, that is exactly true.
DeleteHappy anniversary to you! It’s so lovely that the power of words with each other’s choice of words, punctuations, and tones made pen pals grow into partners in life.
ReplyDeleteYoko
The power of words made us partners in life, that is true!
DeleteI knew a couple who met as penpals. He was a friend to my husband. She was from Scotland. I liked her from the first time I met her. Happy Anniversary to bot of you. I look forward to reading about your 66th. And by the way Morning Has Broken is a perfect choice for a wedding song.
ReplyDeleteWell, the first 33 went by quickly enough! I thought the song was good for a wedding, but I must admit I had never heard it played at a wedding before or since.
DeleteHappy Anniversary! Your love story should be preserved, maybe someday it would make a cool movie! Especially since kids these days would have no idea that such a thing could happen.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, let's get someone to make a movie of our lives, and they could hollywood it up and make it more interesting and exciting! Heck, might as well get a super model to play me...hey, you know that is how it could go! HA!
DeleteHappy anniversary! Splendid Shakespeare. And we used to sing that hymn at school. It is I think an Irish tune, or at least it sounds like one! Eleanor Farjeon was a famous children's book writer in her day and is buried about a mile or so from my home.

ReplyDeleteOH! I am glad that you told that she is buried near to where you live! St John at Hampstead Churchyard...is that correct? What a fascinating woman! And children's writers, they truly are my favorite.
DeleteWishing you and your husband a Happy Anniversary. Hope you have a fun evening. Always remember your sweet love. Blessings, xoxo, Susie
ReplyDeleteThank YOU, sweet Susie! xx
DeleteHappy anniversary to you and your husband! Wishing you many more wonderful years together.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Martha! Thanking you very kindly for your well wishes!
DeleteHappy Anniversary. Hopefully letter writing will survive the onslaught of new technology.
ReplyDeleteIt is most unusual to receive a handwritten letter now or even a note or card!
DeleteHappy Anniversary! How sweet to still have your love letters. Hope you got out and about and enjoyed your day.
ReplyDeleteI have all the letters that Richard wrote to me except the very first one. I put that one somewhere very safe and it is so safe that I can't find it! LOL.
DeleteHappy Anniversary. Thanks for the song, it's one of my all time favourites but associated with a sad memory so I've shed a tear and indulged in sweet memories. I hope you indulge in many happy memories today!
ReplyDeleteOh, I am sorry that the song made you cry! Bless you, you are so sweet and kind, I appreciate your well wishes very much. x
DeleteHappy anniversary. Clearly a heart of love produces the wonderful sharing that we find here.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Dennis! That is very kind of you to say so but please see the little angel picture at the bottom of my blog...she says, "Dear Lord, please let me be the kind of person my blog readers think I am!"
DeleteMany congratulations and I hope you had a wonderful anniversary. I shall add that to the list of Good Things that happen on the anniversary of my birthday.
ReplyDeleteOH, I hope you had a happy birthday on the 4th! Good Things indeed!
DeleteI remember the Cat Stevens song very well from my childhood!
ReplyDeleteHappy, happy, happy anniversary, dear Kay and Richard!
Steve and I met online, in a Star Trek themed chatroom... we weren't the only couple to find each other there, and get married, although the chatroom was never set up as a dating platform :-)
RJ and I met at a work-related event (called "IT Brunch"), were together for four years and are still the best of friends.
O.K. and I have indeed met through an online dating platform, so in a way you could say we started out by writing letters (although in electronic form), too.
Thank you! And I think the online dating platform also counts as writing letters, it is all in written form, after all!
DeleteA lovely melody, and we often sing the hymn version in my church choir. Happy Anniversary, and best wishes for many more!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I love to listen to church choirs! I bet you even have "Songs of Praise" the TV show in Australia, don't you? I love that show but we don't have it in the USA!
DeleteOther than you and Richard, Kay...none I'm aware of...
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your anniversary...doing what you enjoy doing and sharing. :)
Thanks, Lee! And if you look at my featured post on the side, that is another couple who met as pen friends and married, it is a great story and book.
DeleteWell, Happy Anniversary! Couples in the future will be able to say they met via emails on dating sites. Is that the same thing, LOL?
ReplyDeleteThanks! And emails on dating sites, I suppose it is also the written word, right?
DeleteHappy Anniversary, Kay and Richard. I'm so glad you found each other and made such a happy life together.
ReplyDeleteA happy life together, that is lovely! Thank you, Kay!
DeleteOh this is so romantic and amazing...happy anniversary :) your story is like a real-life movie :)
ReplyDeleteYes! And what about you and YOUR new wife AND new life in Germany! I should think you could write a book, yours is very romantic. Look forward to your movie! :-)
DeleteHappy anniversary! Hope you enjoyed Brasstown Bald and hope you got to see Hamilton Gardens!
ReplyDeleteThanks! And yes, we did both but we saw the gardens later late in the day so we couldn't walk too far.
DeleteMajor congratulations on lasting 33 years. I think that, technically, you could say that me and my partner met through writing letters.
ReplyDeleteThank you! And I can't speak for anyone else but it was most certainly the best way for me, I think I communicate better on paper than in person!
DeleteOh, I love Morning Has Broken ~ such a beautiful song! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to you lovebirds!!! 33 years is awesome!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Audrey! It is very nice to have you send this kind wishes since I consider you our honorary daughter! xx
DeleteHappy Anniversary! How sweet that you met while writing each other. My parents wrote back and forth during WWII and I'm getting Dad's letters to Mom written out for a book with pics to go with it. Fun to imagine them as young and in love! They didn't make it past 30yrs as Dad passed away in 1976. Mom just turned 90..long time to be away from your true love. May you have many more lovely anniversaries to celebrate!
ReplyDeleteThank you! And I love the idea of you making a book out of the letters written between your Mom and Dad! Your Mom is amazing, I can hardly believe she is 90! Of course, I can scarcely believe that YOU have grandchildren! :-)
