Sussex By The Sea-Eastbourne

God gives all men all earth to love,
But since man’s heart is small,
Ordains for each one spot shall prove
    Beloved over all.
Each to his choice, and I rejoice
The lot has fallen to me
In a fair ground—in a fair ground—
    Yea, Sussex by the sea!

The above is from a poem by Rudyard Kipling. The photo is a shadow "selfie" of us along the seafront in Eastbourne which is in East Sussex in England! Richard and I walked a lot while we were there, including walking up to Beachy Head...but more about that later.
It has been a bit more difficult to get back to my work-a-day life this week. There is enough energy for my job but little else.  I wanted very much to watch the first game of the World Series last night...I just saw on the news that it went on for 14 innings and lasted until after 1 this morning! Wow! I will call my Dad, I bet HE watched it and will tell me all about it! I do like sports!  I watched the sports news in England and they showed a very close rugby game between Scotland and Australia. I wish I could have seen it!  How many rugby games have I seen in my life? None! However, I have watched enough American football games that I think I can pick up the basics of rugby quickly enough! If you would like to see more about that close rugby game you may read a bit just here.

Hey! McDonald's in England has green signs and uniforms!  Here is one of the few TV ads that I saw while we were there. Am I promoting eating there? No way! I can't think how many years ago I ate there!  Take care everyone...eat healthy foods, get proper exercise and notice the beauty around you!

  1. I needed a little trip to beach as it's raining hard here this morning and looks like a dark dreary day. Thanks!

  2. You mentioning your Dad made me smile... I imagine you chatting on the phone while watching a game "together", as you've described a few times on your blog.
Here in Germany, McDonald's are Advertising a "bio burger" - it's supposed of course to attract the more health- and environmentally conscious people, but it's not what it promises: Only the meat is "bio" (or "green" produced), everything else is just the normal fast food stuff. The bread is coloured with malt syrup to make it look more "rustic". But I bet there's enough people they manage to convince they have all of a sudden turned into Providers of healthy, organic food!

    1. It is fun to watch a baseball game with my Dad. We talk about what is happening on the TV screen but very often, we begin to talk of other things...and something exciting will happen in the game, and then, we will have to pay attention to the replay to see what happened! :-)
Companies really do try to pull the wool over our eyes! They only look at what is trendy and popular and hope to capitalize on it and make more profits. I think that the labeling in our country is getting better, I think some of the claims in our packaging had to be changed due to federal laws that were passed!

  3. Such a lovely place. Looks like you had a marvelous time. Great header shot also. I am going to pay more attention to the McDonald advertisements. They are now advertising breakfasts all day. We tend to stay out of there unless we are road tripping.

    1. Yes, I saw they are having breakfast all day now. They should get my Dad to make biscuits, theirs are terrible! :-)
We had a great time in England, it just went too fast!

  4. Sounds like you're still jet-lagged from your trip to England. Rugby is such a high-contact sport and those players have no protection. Only the tough and rugged play rugby!

    1. Remember I found a slip of paper from my trip last year with the words "sleepy, dopey, grumpy" written on it? Perhaps it DID have to do with jet lag!
Rugby! Wow, I wish I could have seen some of it on TV in England, there is not one single mention of it in the USA. And yes, I see that they don't wear helmets or padding, tough indeed!

  5. That poem certainly makes me ponder what might be my one spot beloved overall...But I don't ponder too long. I think it is Bath, Ohio. With Budapest a close second. What an interesting beach you photographed your shadows on. I don't think I've ever seen one with all those small stones. Lovely.

    1. I like the poem by Mr. Kipling but I honestly, I have many beloved spots!
I love the beaches in Florida, the mountains in Georgia and North Carolina, the great cities of London and New York City, the moon over Miami, the Colorado Rockies, Lake Tahoe, the beloved "stone" mountains in this area ...and every single spot I have visited in southeast England!
I think all the beaches over there must have what they call a "shingle" beach with all those stones...I love them. xx

    2. Kay, look at pictures of Filey for sandy beaches in England - definitely not a shingle one, and neither is Scarborough :-)

    3. I see that Filey Beach is promoted for its sandy beach so it must be true that the vast majority of beaches in England have a shingle beach! And even all the shingle beaches have a sandy beach also when the tide goes out! I have made sandcastles in Eastbourne but I had to be quick about it!

    4. Okay, my computer let me see some photos of Filey Beach. Shame on you, now you are making me want to go to Yorkshire!!

  6. That is a beautiful shore! Someday, i hope, i will find my beloved spot.

Rugby is one tough sport, and it sounds like this year's Series teams are so closely matched it's going to be a nail biter for everyone.

    1. Glad you like it, Emma! You can look it up, that is just the last part of it, it is a much longer poem...and he even mentions THE LONG MAN....look that up too, it is a great sight to see from the train!

  9. Now that's a great selfie....a selfie isn't even a shadow of that brilliant shot! Well done! :)

As for McDonalds...it's years and years - an eternity - since I've entered one of their stores...and I've only ever had one of their "burgers" (and it was a mini-burger of sorts)...and only twice have I had their fries/chips in all the years. Similar applies to KFC...I've only ever had KFC three times in my life...and the third time I tossed it away after the first bite.

Rugby Union and Rugby League are both very different to American Football, Kay. :) It's good to see that our Aussie Wallabies (Rugby Union) and our neighbours across The Ditch, the All Blacks (New Zealand) team will be battling it out in the World Cup Final this weekend. It should be a good match; and I'll be happy with whoever wins. The Aussies and the Kiwis, even though we enjoy ribbing each other....are good mates. :)

    1. A SHADOW, ha, ha you are funny!
Oh, I do know that football and rugby are very different but you should not underestimate my powers of observation when it comes to sports! HA! I am rubbish at everything but I honestly can pick up my sports games very quickly! I wonder if I will be able to find the Rugby World Cup Final on any of my TV channels here, that sounds like something good to watch!
LOVED the TV show..."Flight of the Conchords"...they made me laugh at the way the Aussies and Kiwis were with each other...so funny!

  10. Hope your energy returns. I've been using up far too much of mine watching the Rugby World Cup games. Only one more - the final - to go. You are more observant than me. I didn't notice the different McDonald's colours but then I wasn't near many big towns. Love your beach shot!

    1. Yes, Pauline, other bloggers write fascinating posts but I consider it my duty to tell my readers that the McDonald's uniforms and signage are in dark green! SO important! HA!
I also hope my energy returns! I can't imagine the jet lag for you when you returned from Scotland!

  11. Y'all don't have the green theme in McDonalds? Enjoy the game. I don't get into sports much myself but every so often something will come along that catches my interest.

    1. For my entire life the McDonald's colors have been yellow and red.
My son has inherited my love of sports. Last night, we spoke on the phone about our dream of going to Cooperstown in New York state!

  12. I think that the macdonalds thing is to try and get away from the American image for some reason. Not sure that anyone is fooled! xx
