Bright Shiny Aluminum Christmas Trees

What kind of Christmas tree do you have? A real one? A fake one that tries to look real, with green branches? Just this year, I have noticed in the stores for the first time, the shiny aluminum Christmas trees from my childhood. (Our tree was all silver, and it had a light with a revolving panel of colors so the tree would turn the various shades from the light through the glass but thinking of it, it was the 60's, so it must have been plastic.  I loved it.)  Apparently, they were all the rage in the USA from 1958 until 1965.  What happened to make them completely drop from favor? Why, it was the wonderful TV show, "A Charlie Brown Christmas", of course!  (And if you happen to be reading this, and you have NOT seen this, please do yourself a favor and watch it. Go on, do it RIGHT NOW, please.  You will thank me.)  The music, the dear little children's voices, the beautiful message...all of it makes for me, a very cherished childhood memory.  It was always something that I made sure that I always watched with my younger sister, every year, it was a tradition with us.  So much so, that when the music by Vince Guaraldi came out a few years ago on CD, my sister gave it to me in memory of those times together. (My favorite Advent music,  thank you Pam!)  My son sang this song recently, and it is so beautiful, it made me tearful.  I didn't know those last few words, and that seems the whole point of the song to me...so I have the lyrics here for you.
Tree with crocheted ornaments, all made by me except for the lovely snowflakes on the front which I received in a Snowflake Swap. Thanks, Samantha!

Christmas time is here
Happiness and cheer
Fun for all that children call
Their favorite time of the year

Snowflakes in the air
Carols everywhere
Olden times and ancient rhymes
Of love and dreams to share

Sleigh bells in the air
Beauty everywhere
Yuletide by the fireside
And joyful memories there

Christmas time is here
We'll be drawing near
Oh, that we could always see
Such spirit through the year
Oh, that we could always see
Such spirit through the year...

And my Dad always calls me when he sees this is on TV. ("Quick, Kay, turn on your TV, Charlie Brown is on! HEE HEE")  He loves Charlie Brown and so do I!  I love all these characters created by Charles Schulz and I am thankful that even though he is no longer with us, we can still enjoy his humor and wisdom. Hope all of you are having a wonderful Christmas-time.

  1. Charlie Brown Christmas is the best!

You might also enjoy Benny Grunch's song, "I Could See The Aluminum Tree Through the Picture Window." It reminisces about those trees, how much fun they were.

    1. I totally agree!
I couldn't find that song by him but I did find, "I Can See Elvis In The Mildew On My Wall." He sounds like quite a character! :-)

  2. Your tree is - to my "European"-trained eyes - very unusual and what I would think of as "typical American", but I like it :-)
And I love Charlie Brown, too!

    1. I am glad you like my little tree. It just needed a little love. So happy you love Charlie Brown too, Peanuts must surely be loved all over the world!
I have "American" trained eyes, and I see beauty in the most unusual places! :-)
Someone typed this into a search engine and got to my blog..."You don't sound American"...that made me laugh, because I most certainly am! (But you already know that!)

    1. Dear Susie,
So glad that this brought back happy memories for you!
Our silver tree was blown away in a tornado along with most of our childhood things. (We were not there at the time, but it was sad to lose it along with some of the few toys that were kept from our childhood.)
      Happy Christmas to you!!

  4. My Aunt and Uncle lived across the street from us. Their home was always in perfect order...they had only big kids..we were a brood of six with a houseful of chaos (and fun!). They had a silver aluminum tree that turned and a wheel with many colors that gave the tree a different look..we had a live tree with typical ornaments and tons of tinsel. I wouldn't trade our real tree for theirs, but I sure enjoyed going over there and watching their tree change colors. Your tree brought back wonderful memories of an Aunt and Uncle no longer with us and Christmases that seemed so magical. I have loved Charlie Brown forever and the Christmas special is just that...special. (Oh, we now have a fake tree that tries to look real..but I like it anyway!)

    1. Hey Kathy!
Is that the same Aunt that you would sit on the porch with and eat watermelon and she would put salt on it and you didn't? HA, I just was reading your past posts yesterday morning and saw that!
The tree that they had sounds exactly like the one that we did. My little sister never knew it, born in 1966, we only had real trees after that.
I am SO HAPPY that this brought back good memories for you. And for our whole married lives together, we have always had a fake tree that tries to look real too!

  5. Charles Schultz certainly had it right, didn't he? I loved him then, I love him now. I love your little tinsel tree. My hubby had one when he was a kid with the color panel light, too. xo Diana

    1. Oh yes, Diana, I LOVE Charles Schultz, to be able to say so much with his little cartoon characters.
Do you have the expression "Lit up like a Christmas tree"? If something is very colorful, I used to hear that a lot, I don't hear it much anymore.
      Happy Christmas!

  6. I remember the sort of aluminum tree you talk about. My aunt Hazel had one. It's good to see that they're coming back into fashion. My mother found all the old clip-on candle holders that belonged to her mother. We've been meaning to try to find a metal tree so that we could use them. I'd be afraid to put lighted candles on a real tree for fear of fire. But a metal one, with lighted candles, even for a few minutes might be nice. I'll have to see if I can find one.

Hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas! xoxox

    1. I wonder why it is that I have begun seeing them again?
What has brought them back into style? Don't get me wrong, I love real trees and I like the fake ones that try to look real with pretty lights and decorations.
I would love to see a tree (even a metal one) with real candles on it, but since I have no idea how to do that, I would not even attempt it. You are braver than I am! :-)
      Happy Christmas!

  7. We had a silver aluminum tree in the 60s too -- glad they're coming back into style! My auntie had one with blue rayon balls and a blue garland on it. We all thought it was the height of sophistication, LOL!

What a charming post! I have always loved the whole peanuts gang. I sometimes call one of my doggies, Snoopy! A Charlie Brown Christmas - it's been a while since I last watched this. Look forward to seeing that classic again.....am sure it will bring back lots of wonderful memories.
    Happy Holidays!

  12. We were just talking about Charlie Brown last night, because my husband was amazed that I'd never seen it! I will definitely rectify this ! We have a fake green tree because the real ones used to drop needles and the cat and dog tried to eat them.Hope you're having a lovely Christmas, Kay!

  14. We had a silver tree growing up and how we hated it! The ironic thing was that my father was a lumberjack...!!! I guess it's the old story of the painter's house that needs painting and the mechanic's car not working. I just love your crocheted ornaments :) And what would Christmas be without good old Charlie Brown!

    1. HA! A lumberjack with a fake tree, that's funny! Speaking of funny, I hope he liked "The Lumberjack Song" from Monty Python. There was a funny ad on TV about that show, it showed a snippit from the show and then a voice said, "If your girlfriend laughs at this, MARRY HER." Isn't that funny?
Thanks for liking my little hand-tortured, I mean handmade crochet ornaments!!

  15. Kay! LOVE your blog!!!! And I, too, love A Charlie Brown Christmas. It really is brilliant and stands the test of time. That song always fills me up with joy! There are still 1950's aluminum trees in antique stores. I had one for a while in the 90's but mine was very small and I ended up giving it away when I moved. I still see them sometimes, especially in gay homes & shops! Merry Christmas!! Dave in DC

  16. Hello Kay,
Thank you for the Charlie Brown link (and smile!). When buying a Christmas tree each year it has to pass the Charlie Brown test - if it is looking a bit 'twiggy' it is too 'Charlie brown'!
Wishing you, your husband and son a very warm and happy Christmas!

  18. Hi Kay

You have mentioned Advent music. My Advent begins with the strains of Joan Baez singing O come, O come Emmanuel on her 1966 Noel album. Sometimes I cheat and play it on the earliest date that Advent Sunday could be rather than when it falls that particular year. Childlike impatience.

We have a fibre optic tree plus a real one in a pot which lives in the garden throughout the year and which I lug in circa Advent Sunday.

I am catching up on old posts so do give Christopher our congratulations for his Christmas singing.

I am, indeed, lucky to be able to get to such places and concerts with relative ease. Are you likely to be seeing The Albert in the near future?

    KInd Regards

    1. Hello Henry!
Thanks for your comment here! I love to hear Joan Baez sing also, do you know the song, "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down"? Richard says it was a hit in England too.
And I will tell C. that you liked his singing. It wasn't easy for him in that kind of setting, but I thought he did a good job of it.
I hope to get to the Royal Albert Hall, just not sure when that will be.
Hope y'all have a wonderful Christmas! Love, KAY

  20. Your aluminum tree is gorgeous! I love shiny things. Then I wouldn't have to worry about tinsel. We have an artificial tree that is easy to put together. I guess that's what I like best about it. Merry Christmas!!!

  21. An artificial tree is also cost effective as it does not need to be watered and once bought it does not need to be transferred from place to place as with a real tree. Artificial trees can be kept up as long as possible for those who are attached to the holidays but real ones rot and may have to be taken down immediately after the holiday season. Check Artificial Christmas Trees website for more details.
