The Sky is Falling (Spoiler: It's Not!)

The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

Is it a meteor or a meteorite?  Why, it is a meteor in the sky, of course! When it hits our good old Earth, it is a meteorite! (When it is floating in space before it comes into the Earth's atmosphere, it is a meteoroid.)  At first, we were told of a "fireball" in the sky at around noon yesterday. We had been walking with friends, and we didn't see it. There were photos online of people taking videos in South Carolina. When I get home, I see on the news that the meteor was in the sky over Newton County, Georgia! (Newton County is the next county to the east of us!) AND pieces of it fell through a roof on a house in Henry County, which is the county to the southwest of us! Gee whiz, all of this is just a bit too close to home for me.  On top of that, this past Saturday, Richard and I were walking at a local park. We were on a sidewalk, which is just beside the parking lot with the softball fields on the OTHER side of the sidewalk. Suddenly, I hear Richard say, "WATCH OUT!".  I quickly ducked and covered my head!  The softball whizzed past me and landed HARD on one car and then, bounced off and hit another one.  I am just glad it wasn't my head! (Or arm or elbow, you get the idea.)

You must all remember that story of Chicken Little. When I was a kid, I always felt sorry for her. I mean, I just remember thinking, "she's just a little chicken, what does she know?"  If she alarmed everyone, well, shouldn't someone else have known better? See, I started early trying to take up for the little guys!

It is just too hot for June!  I am sure you all must have heard of the record-breaking heat in the USA.  Sadly, it has caused deaths. On a happy note, the young man that I told you about that was torn from his house by a tornado has been released from the Shepherd Spinal Center and has gone home! And he is walking!  Good news is always welcome. And what about that woman in Florida who had her home flipped on its side, and then, it fell back HARD, right side up? And she survived! She called it her "Wizard of Oz" moment, and it truly looked so much like it.  I was amazed. (The video of it was on a door camera from next door.)

The Atlanta Braves just finished a series against the New York Mets. Before the beginning of each game, the TV camera would linger for a few moments on different scenes of New York City.  One of the shots was of a bridge with a tram running alongside of it.  (Richard reminded me that it had to be the one used in a Spiderman film!) I looked it up, it is officially called the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge, but I think everyone must still call it the 59th Street Bridge. Hey! Isn't there a song called that? You bet there is!

Hope you are feeling groovy, my friends! (Look up 59th Street song by Simon & Garfunkel, in case you can't see my video.)

Oh! And I did want to show you some of Richard's photos....

Remember the starry rosinweed that is a wildflower that blooms in our yard? Richard propped it up with some bits of a tomato cage!

A dragonfly is supposed to eat one hundred mosquitoes a day. Welcome to our yard, you gorgeous creature, eat them all!

Finally, I want to share a photo of ...you will laugh.. it is of Richard's TROUSERS!  Honestly, it doesn't take much to tickle us, we don't get out much! There, is it funny or scary?  I don't want to ALARM anyone!

  1. Richard's trousers have seen things. Terrible things. Things they can't forget. They're feelin' haunted, not groovy.

  2. I find meteorites fascinating. I've seen a few, but none that struck earth.
Richards photos are spectacular! I so love that bridge shot.
    His trousers made me laugh!
I listened to that song twice - a good one I haven't heard for a long time!

    1. Notice that I called them "trousers". Do you know that in England when you say "pants", they think you mean "underwear"! LOL!

  4. You had me laughing out loud at that last photo, Kay! :-D
I'm afraid I have never heard of Chicken Little; must be an American thing.
Funnily enough, our main news last night didn't find "your" meteorite worth mentioning. It was all Gaza, and some prominent national politics.
We've been having high summery temperatures all week and are in for more this weekend and next week, but it's summer after all, and not unusual in this parts in late June.
Hooray for the young man being out of hospital! How scary to have your house flipped to the side and back again, with you in it!! I honestly can not imagine anything like it.

    1. You know Richard didn't know of Chicken Little either. I think in some stories she is called "Henny Penny" but the story is the same: an acorn falls on her head and she is certain that the sky is falling and convinces other animals to believe it too. It evolves into all of them being together and eaten up by a fox, I think. Although, the story is a bit long and I don't remember that part of it! Glad you like Richard's trousers hanging out in the sun too! x

  5. I've seen meteorites many times from our back garden at night though I doubt I will see them as good as I did on Dartmoor one November over 50 years ago, it looked like it was raining them. It getting hot here and Monday & Tuesday are expected to be around 33deg C that is 91or 92 f to you over there. Too dam hot for us so it's off to Wales for a few days till it cools down. Most of all we need rain. You did well with the .dragon fly, I'm lucky to get a photo of them, too quick for an iphone.
Do like the horse head trousers

    1. Ah, Wales. I love the scenes of Wales that I have seen on TV, it looks lovely. Richard has a very steady hand with the camera, whether it is the camera or his cell phone! Not me, I am old and shaky. LOL! "Horse head trousers", love that!

  6. Meteorites are supposed to be fairly common but luckily most burn up or land in empty areas or oceans. Ancient tribes used to use them to make swords etc. There's one here about five feet circular that stayed intact from the 1800s and about the weight of a car that would have done real damage but landed in a field. The weather is definitely changing as it's been hotter and drier this last decade. Luckily we are in the north so a 30c day is still rare here. London 30c plus fairly common now every summer. 86F to 91F down there. Bob.

    1. As many years as I have visited England, I can tell you that I really notice the difference in the temps over the years. Eastbourne is like The Riveria in the summer now!

  7. I didn’t know the difference between a meteor and a meteorite, so thank you for that interesting fact. So glad the softball missed you!!! Extraordinary about that the young man and the woman in Florida. They are going to be telling those stories for the rest of their lives. Interesting bit of trivia about the bridge and love that old Simon & Garfunkel song, anything Simon & Garfunkel in fact. Thanks for the link. Richard's photos are lovely and thank you for sharing his trousers. Such a hoot! Wishing you both a very happy July!

  8. I saw a meteor once, it was so cool, and so speedy! Before I could tell the person I was with about it, it was gone.

Your pictures and posts are so enjoyable and as for the trousers, I think they just had a great night at the comedy club and are trying to recover.

    1. Hey Graham, Great to see your comment here! I wonder if children even know of this story now? And I have always loved children's books. I am not an expert but have read so many to children over the years. Which was my pleasure, of course, I hope all the kids liked it.

  11. Learn something new every day -- meteor, meteoroid, meteorite. Never thought about all the different names before.

Yikes! Glad the softball didn't make contact with any of your parts.

It is definitely hot here. 109 F with lots of dust storms lately, too. Makes getting outside less than pleasurable.

Thanks for stopping by my corner of the world and leaving a comment. Take care.
