Whispering Grass- 1975 Number One! (In The UK)

"Hey, you know, that's really good".

It's nice to hear those words, isn't it? It is especially nice to have someone point out something to you that might be overlooked.

"Whispering Grass" was a number one single in 1975 in the UK.  It was by Don Estelle and Windsor Davies. (Don Estelle is the one who sings, Windsor Davies speaks.) It was from a popular sit-com at the time called "It Ain't Half Hot Mum". Now, I don't know one thing about that comedy, so please don't fuss at me if it is sexist or racist or homophobic, it is a product of its time.  One thing I DO know is that Don Estelle can sing! Why, I find his vocal simply astonishing and that is what the British people must have recognized also...even though they saw this in a comedy and it was meant as a source of humour, they must have wanted to hear it as it went to number one!

There, I hope you were able to hear this song!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Everybody doing okay these days? Keeping calm amidst it all?

I am trying my best!  Take care, everyone!

I still say "y'all".  I also call my purse my "pocketbook" and when  I go to a grocery store,  I use a "buggy"!

  1. Very, VERY camp video, LOL! But my gawd, yes, Don Estelle has a GORGEOUS voice! I've never heard this song before (or heard of that British sitcom either).

    1. Both men have passed away now, I read up about them both.
There will always be this song though! Music is forever.
      Glad you liked it too!

  2. Your cup is so cute, I have one that just says Keep Calm and Carry On but yours has the fun twist to it. My friend who is from New York calls her purse her pocketbook. When I got a job in California on my first day I asked if they have a bubbler. They were mystified and we finally figured out I wanted to know where the drinking fountain was. Bubbler is from Wisconsin; regional differences are fun.

    1. I did a post about the "Keep Calm and Carry On" poster from WW2. I will have to go back and find it!
Bubbler! Never heard of that but it makes sense!

    1. Yes! It was a hit in the 1940's so you are exactly right.
      Glad you liked this version.

    1. Hey John! I thought so too! And I need to remind myself to keep calm so I thought it might be okay to remind others.

  5. I would never expect that voice to come out of that man. What a wonderful surprise! I never heard of that show either but I love all the British shows and we have watched a ton of them these last few months. If you can watch New Tricks it is quite funny and all about senior citizens going back to police work with a great young, pretty 'boss'. xo Diana

    1. Oh yes, I love NEW TRICKS! If you watch closely, there is a lot of London history in the background of the show and you know I love that! They changed their pretty blonde boss in the show, I liked them both. x

    1. So good you liked it too! I think the Brits are good at looking at things objectively, they don't just put people in little boxes...you are a singer only, you are a comedian only...if you see what I mean!

  8. What a great combination of a speaking voice and a singing voice. I like it! My purse is a purse or a bag, because I usually carry tote bags. Since moving to Florida, I sometimes say y'all. I think a shopping cart will always be a shopping cart to me. The first time I switched off a light and a native said something about my mashing the button, I said, What?!!!

    Love,
    Janie

    1. I think I have heard mashing the button only once in my life about turning off the light, can't remember where I was but it took a second to know what they meant!
The gentleman who "spoke" during this song was Windsor Davies and he only died in 2019, he had a long career in TV and films and doing voiceovers in ads. (That voice!)
The other gentleman ,Don Estelle, his life seemed a bit sad. He died in 2003. You will have to read about him. At least he left us this wonderful vocal. Music is for always!
