"Silhouettes" was a big hit for the Herman Hermits in 1965. Did you know that it had already been a hit for the Rays in 1957? I didn't know that, I just learned it! The Rays were a Doo-Wop Group and they remind me very much of the 50's music from the film "Back To The Future"! (I hope you all know that is one of my very favorite films EVER! Remember the dance? The theme was "Enchantment Under the Sea"!) Anyway, what was I talking about before my film self jumped in there? OH yes, the song- "Silhouettes"!
Of course, I am going to have the lyrics so that you can sing along! Yes, you know I will!
Ah ah ah ah ah
Took a walk and passed your house late last night
All the shades were pulled and drawn way down tight
From within, the dim light cast two silhouettes on the shade
Oh, what a lovely couple they made
Kisses I could almost taste in the night
Wondered why I'm not the guy whose silhouette's on the shade
I couldn't hide the tears in my eyes
Silhouette's (silhouette's) ty oh, oh oh
Silhouette's (silhouette's) silhouette's (silhouette's)
Silhouette's (silhouette's) ty oh, oh oh
Let me in or else I'll beat down your door
When two strangers who have been two silhouettes on the shade
Said to my shock, "You're on the wrong block"
Rushed out to your house with wings on my feet
Loved you like I'd never loved you, my sweet
Vowed that you and I would be two silhouettes on the shade
All of our days, two silhouettes on the shade
Silhouette's (silhouette's) ty oh, oh oh
Silhouette's (silhouette's) silhouette's (silhouette's)
Silhouette's (silhouette's) ty oh, oh oh
Oh Ding DANG, I can't get the one by Herman's Hermits on here. YouTube won't allow me. You can easily look it up...
The version by Herman's Hermits is speeded up a bit. I like them both, you know I do!
The song was written by Bob Crewe and Frank Slay Jr. And it is funny for me to learn they also wrote a favorite song of mine as a very young child, "Lucky Ladybug" by Billy and Lillie on the Swan label. See, I told you I have always liked music! It has always been a big part of my life. They also wrote many of the hits by the Four Seasons AND they also wrote "Silence Is Golden". Gee, no one ever SAYS that anymore do they? More's the pity, I say!
The idea for "Silhouettes" came to Bob Crewe as he was on a train and saw a couple embrace through a windowshade. The song really does tell a story, so be sure to read through the lyrics even if you don't sing them. (And apparently, Cliff Richard had a hit with it in 1990 in England. Our son was a baby then so I don't remember that, I must have been a bit busy!)
These photos are from this time last year but I hope you won't mind me showing you. The leaves are just as pretty today! How are you all doing? Hope you are all well and enjoying beauty, even if it is in your own back yard.
I probably am sounding like the old fuddy-duddy I am...but the music of my era...and that of the era before mine...is better than that of today. A long-standing friend and I were discussing this very subject the other day. We believe we were the lucky ones to have enjoyed such great music. :)
ReplyDeleteWe were lucky to have such music! I am open to any type of music but what passes for music these days, I just can't understand it and nothing can make me listen to music I don't like!!
DeleteThat particular story-song always made me laugh, he's on the wrong block. It's a lovely song, the music from that era is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteYes! On the wrong block, it's funny, really! :-)
DeleteMy era too. Photos of Autumn leaves always happify me.
ReplyDeleteWe have had such windy storms lately, I was afraid that we wouldn't have much color but as always, it was a lovely time of year!
DeleteI was a big Hermans Hermits fan when I was a kid and so yes, I remember their version very well!
ReplyDeleteI bet you loved Paul Revere and the Raiders, the Dave Clark Five, The Monkees....I could go on and on! I think you must be about my same age!
DeleteKay, Back to the Future is one of my all-time favourite films, too! Don't you instantly smile when you hear the first few sounds of "Mr. Sandman", and then the unforgettable "Earth Angel" at the "Enchantment under the Sea" ball?
ReplyDeleteI remember how I was sitting at home in October 2015 (that was before I knew O.K., and I was feeling a little lonely) and suddenly saw on TV that the real 21st of October 2015 was fast approaching - that is the day Marty and the Doc travel to with the Delorean.
One of my favourite lines in the film is when Marty leaves the house of his relatives in the 1950s, without them of course knowing who he is, and he says to them "I'll see y'all later... much later..."
Cracks me up every time!
YES!! Back To The Future is a firm favorite at our house! WE are constantly using quotes from it! Did you know that the BIFF character was actually modelled after TRUMP? Isn't that something? I didn't know it, and after Trump won, I kept saying, "It's Biff's world!" without even knowing that that had been the writer's intention!
DeleteRichard and I saw Back To The Future at a movie theatre in Eastbourne with his parents in 1985! Makes it very special for us. And of course, our son loves it too!!
Silhouettes was a favorite when The Rays had a hit with it and then again with Herman's Hermits (oh how I loved Peter Noone). Lucky Ladybug is one of my favorite "lucky" songs. Silence Is Golden is one of the greats. Now I'm going to listen to some of my lucky songs. They always make me feel good.
ReplyDeleteThe Rays were wonderful, weren't they? I hadn't heard of them but their singing was out of this world good!!
DeleteWonderful memories.
ReplyDeleteMusical memories are good ones!!
DeleteDid not think I knew that one until I read the lyrics then I remembered the song.
ReplyDeleteI was the same way! Richard thought of it when I told him about a list of happy songs (that somebody had put together) and he thought that this song should have been included. It made me look it up and read the lyrics!
DeleteI too can remember Herman's Hermits :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful colour in the Autumn leaves.
All the best Jan
Hey Jan! Hope you are doing well! Listening to music and enjoying some beauty in your part of the world!! x
DeleteI have always loved that song! And Back to the Future is such a fun movie! How pretty your tree leaves are! Loved visiting here!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for your visit! Please come back and see me again now, you hear?! :-)
DeleteOh- I remember all that music from that era, Kay! Fall is looking quite beautiful where you are. We have snow here already-ugh. I hope you have a wonderful week- xo Diana
ReplyDeleteDIANA! How GOOD to see your comment here! So glad you are back in the blogging world!!
DeleteYou can keep your snow now, don't send any of that stuff to Georgia, people can't drive as it is! xx
Good Morning to you! So glad to meet you. Great minds think alike on table choices, aka you and me. Nana Diana's table choosing is such a treat and I do consider carefully before I choose.
ReplyDeleteHello, Katie Isabella! Yes, I also choose very carefully, you would think it was a matter of life or death! :-)
DeleteThat napkin on that table is what sealed it for me!
We can't help it, we just have good taste!
Oh wow! I remember! I remember! Well, I remember the Herman’s Hermit’s version anyway. Your leaves are so gorgeous. I used to love fall when we lived in Illinois for the colors and celebration. Here in Hawaii, I just love the cooler weather.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know the other one at all but I like to think that I heard it as a baby and was rocking away in my pram! (I am sure that I did!)
DeleteI LOVE the change of leaves, so very pretty.
I don't remember this song, though I do remember Herman's Hermits.
ReplyDeleteI want to thank you for something you said in your post on Turn, Turn, Turn, about how "a time to remain from embraces" applies to us right now. I found that so encouraging. So thank you!
Happy Thanksgiving to you and Richard.
I am glad you found those words encouraging but I can't take credit for them, they are from the Bible! ;_)
DeleteHappy Thanksgiving to you too, my friend!
I'm dating myself ~ I remember the Rays version well. And the Herman's Hermits rendition. All the good music over the years! Our leaves are long gone, but there is a drift of dried leaves along a wall nearby that the gardeners skipped. So I scuff through them whenever I pick up the mail. Snow tomorrow, so that might be the end of my leaf scuffing this year. All the best to you, Kay!
ReplyDeleteI love kicking through leaves too! And I love the sound the dry leaves make when the wind blows through them, don't you? Happy Thanksgiving to you!
DeleteBeautiful photo of you and the colorful leaves.
ReplyDeleteI didn't think of it at the time but it is really a photo of me in silhouette! I really do love the leaves in Autumn, the colors are just amazing.
