Happy 4th! Walk On!

Happy 4th of July!  Hey, it is almost over now but hearing loud fireworks as I type this.  BANG!  BOOM!

Did anyone else see on the news that they found a copy of the Declaration of Independence... in England?  They are calling it the "Sussex Declaration" since it was found in Chichester in West Sussex!  It is kind of a big deal since there are other copies but this one is from the same time frame as the one that is in the National Archives in Washington, D.C.! Interesting to me, the names on this document are not lumped together by states but the signatures are not in any particular order.  Suggesting perhaps that they wanted the country to be one and that the states should not feel separate from each other?  UNITED States of America!

Okay, listening to the concert from Washington, D.C. on TV, it is called the Capitol Fourth.  (It is broadcast live from the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol.)  They just had a tribute to military families and Renee Fleming sang "You'll Never Walk Alone".   I was so happy to hear it!  (It was written by Rodgers and Hammerstein for the musical "Carousel" but the Brits might be more familiar with it than most Americans!)  Now, Renee Fleming is a great operatic singer but for me...well, I have a video for you!

Hope you take the time to listen and watch the video above.  You will thank me!  And I thank the great Richard Rodgers for this music and Oscar Hammerstein II for the words.  Americans!

Walk on!

  1. I loved Gerry and the Pacemakers! I did read about them finding the copy of the Declaration. Amazing that it lasted so long.

  2. You are the first to let me know about the copy of the Declaration; how interesting.

  3. I did not hear about the copy of the Declaration of Independence, and had never thought about the signatures before. But - you will laugh at this - I do remember an old Star Trek episode (from the first series with Kirk and Spock etc.) where they find a group of people on a planet who seem descendants of humands from Earth and whom they help to overcome their differences by directing their attention to their old, half-forgotten declaration of independence.
(By the way, I am always a little unsure about the spelling - independence or independance?)

    1. Yes, I remember that episode also! Ah, Star Trek, I keep saying I will do a post about it!
It is INDEPENDENCE but I must admit I like the way it looks with that DANCE at the end of it! LOL!

  4. How strange to find a Declaration of Independence in Sussex! If things could talk...
Love that song from Carousel, which was a favourite musical of mine for a long time. I remember the Gerry/Pacemakers version, but would also imagine Renee Fleming would sing it wonderfully too!

    1. She is a wonderful singer but her version sounded very formal to me, not from the heart like the Gerry & The Pacemakers version!

  7. I had read about them finding that Declaration, wonder if we sent it to England as part of our declaration of freedom.

    1. They think it belonged to Charles Lennox, an Englishman who supported the cause of the Colonists in America. Oh dear, i just looked him up. He married but had no children, it said, but he did have 3 illegitimate children by his housekeeper. Tsk, tsk.

  9. Happy 4th of yesterday. Some americans in our neighbourhood were letting off fireworks. Isn't it amazing what documents can turn up when least expected? Remarkable indeed.

    1. Thanks Jenny Woolf! Guess what, I am NOT a fan of fireworks. Last night, 3 houses burned down as a result of fireworks in Georgia. Nope, not a fan.
What documents can turn up when least expected? About someone contacting a bank and asking for a famous person's
bank details? And THEN getting them? Didn't YOU do that for Charles Dodgson? I LOVE that!! :-)

  11. You always have some good, interesting news! I also love the video! Gerry and Pacemakers was one of my favorites back in the day..way back in the day! They made a movie too long ago. Many towns around us are having fireworks thru the weekend and also the neighbors down the road have their usual, and annoying..huge firework, loud party. I'll be happy when Sunday hits! Have a great weekend!

    1. Guess what I just saw on the BBC? They showed this from Arizona but they used DRONES instead of fireworks! Isn't that something! Nothing to cause a fire or those loud BOOMS!
Hope you are having a good summer, YAYA! Take care! If you ever get to Georgia to visit your brother, be sure and let me know!!

  12. Happy Belated Fourth, Kay! I've seen something of those drones instead of fireworks, and it probably is a better idea.
Fascinating about that Sussex copy of the Declaration of Indepenence. I had not heard about it and now think I must try to research it a bit more.
I've loved "You'll Never Walk Alone" since I was very young. It's such a beautiful song.

    1. Hello! Happy 6th of July to you!
What it must have been like to have realized that they had this old copy of the Declaration of Independence! AND some of the copies have a woman's name at the bottom of them! (She was the printer...Mary Katherine Goddard.) She will have to be another post! :-)

  13. I loved the song "You'll Never Walk Alone." I'm quite sure that the version I listened to a lot as a girl in Sioux Lookout was sung by Perry Como. I sang it a lot when I was by myself. Thanks for the memories, for I also loved the G&TP version and others. Interesting information about the new Declaration of Independence. Breckenridge's fireworks were cancelled because of the fire danger in the mountains ~ All the mountain shows were cancelled. All the best to you!

    1. Hey! I sing a LOT of songs when I am alone LOL!
My sister lives in Steamboat Springs, Colorado...I bet that hers was cancelled too. Her son (my nephew) was camping and they were told they had to evacuate due to the fires. YIKES! Scary stuff.
All the best to you, dear Louise! x

  14. I hope you enjoyed your Independence Day, Kay.

Gerry and the Pacemakers certainly set the pace in the early to mid-60s. :)

    1. And Gerry Marsden (with new band members of Pacemakers) even toured in 2017! I just looked and they were in Eastbourne at the end of April last year. Wish I could have seen them!
The video that I gave you was a more recent one, I think, and his voice still sounds very good!

  16. Happy 4th of July Kay. You'll never walk alone is also sung at Liverpool and Glasgow Celtic football matches every week by ten of thousands of fans- presumably due to local band G and the Ps hit. Been a football anthem since the 1960s there but you probably know that.

    1. Oh yes, and how I would love to be amongst all those thousands when they are singing this song! I did a post about this before and although I knew that the Liverpool fans did it, I think you told me that they also sing it in Glasgow also! (Hmm...I wonder, do they sing it at more of the football clubs over there, or just those two?) Anyway, what amazed ME is that I have never heard it sung here, I pointed out in that earlier post about the song that it was written by Rodgers and Hammerstein, so we Americans should appreciate it and sing it more. Someone read my blog post! LOL!
