My sister gave us this rose in memory of Richard's Mom, who died in April. It is a "Queen Elizabeth" rose. Thank you, Pam. It is the most beautiful color of pink and even when the rose is "going over" as my father-in-law calls it, it is still beautiful.
See the giant cactus at the end of the porch? That is our Cereus Peruvianus. It has off-shoots that Richard has also potted. You can see those leaning against the railing (along with my broom, I am noticing!) My Aunt Leona gave us the giant cactus in 1994 and it is over 6 feet tall now. It is a night blooming cactus and you must really watch out for it or you will miss the bloom. Aunt Leona died in 1996 but this gift from her always makes me think of her and when it blooms, I feel as if she is smiling at me. (Leona was such a great, funny lady. She always spelled my name "Kaye" since she liked it that way! She really made me laugh.)
Could anyone identify this for me? We know it is a begonia, of course! We have had it for years but we are not sure. We think it is either an Angelwing Begonia or Dragonleaf Begonia...or could it be something else? Whatever the name, we love it! (It can be a bit messy when the flowers fall, so now you know the reason for that broom!)
So, my friends you can see that I have not been anywhere! Just in my own garden but after all, that is not such a bad place to be, is it? After all, we were created for the Garden.
You are being overrun! OVERRUN by plants!
ReplyDeleteYes, but in a good way!
DeleteYes, you do need a bigger porch. Everything is lovely there at your house. Plants do make a difference and having some for years makes it all the more wonderful. I only know that is a begonia and don't know the variety. My knowledge is limited. But I do love plants! Yours are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteAs you can tell, our knowledge is also limited! All we know for sure, our plants bring us joy and they are just at our doorstep. :-)
DeleteHi Kaye - lovely rose .. and your memories. Fun to see your pots guarding the entrance to your home ... enjoy - cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteYes, Kaye with an "e"!
DeleteOur potted pots-the green sentinels to our home.
absolutely lovely!
ReplyDeleteHello Silver Willow!
DeleteThank you! And I noticed that you have become a follower. You must have wonderful taste! :-) I appreciate you very much.
Absolutely marvelous. So colorful. They really give character to your "porch".
ReplyDeleteThanks, Emma! Yes, we will say that our overcrowded porch has character, that sounds nice!
DeletePretty flowers
ReplyDeleteThank you! I am hoping you see the irony of someone by the name of Adam commenting on this post. :-)
DeleteWhat lovely flowers and plants you have.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
Thank you, Janie! My husband does most of the work involved with them but I do help now and then and I always enjoy them, maybe that counts for something?
DeleteLooking good. I love that rose. I used to have a Queen Elizabeth but not any longer, I should get another. I don't have lot of luck with Roses, but my favourite is the "Peace" rose and that one is still doing OK..............have a great weekend
ReplyDeleteLuv Janice
Funny you should say that, Richard's mother had the "Peace" rose in her garden and I have had photos of that rose on my blog before! Roses can be a bit hard to keep alive in this Georgia heat but we will try our best!
DeleteTake care!
LOOK at those plants! Wow- You have done a wonderful job with all your plants. They look lush and healthy. Hope you are doing well.
ReplyDeleteThere is a "fix" on my blog that seems to be working for those No Reply comments if you want to check it out. It is working for several of us-comments are coming into our email accts again.
Have a great weekend- xo Diana
I will try to check it out. I seem to be a bit "challenged" with anything new but then, you know how goofy I am already, right? Glad things on your blog will be getting back to where you like them!
DeleteHope YOU have a great weekend! xxx
My black thumb salutes you, your garden is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThank you! It is truly my husband's work but I will tell him you said it is beautiful!
DeleteLovely display of flowers. As a workman going into folks houses though every day for 40 years it's not what you hope for. especially carrying ladders and heavy tools past them. The obstacle course would usually continue inside the hall with tables, glass ware, mirrors, expensive clocks, giant house plants and other precious fragile items cunningly arranged inside to make it as hard as possible to enter without hitting something. I was lucky and never did but it was like negotiating a minefield deliberately designed to catch the unwary :o)
ReplyDeleteOh my friend, you underestimate us! We would never have the pots arranged this way if were expecting anyone to come and do any work at our home! In fact, if you notice, we have to leave a pathway clear just so that WE can get in! Our plants and birds are a big priority at our home, they give us such pleasure. (Precious, fragile items? Not in our house! LOL!)
DeleteYou do have a nice porch with pretty plants.
ReplyDeleteThank you! They have grown so much lately, especially that begonia, that it is surprising. There's always room for just one more plant! :-)
DeleteThese are all so beautiful! I especially like the rose your friend gave you. I bet it has a lovely fragrance, at least I hope so.
ReplyDeleteSorry, I see your sister gave you the rose. It's lovely.
ReplyDeleteYes, it was from my sister and it is lovely. Not much of a fragrance, or maybe that is just because of our extreme heat just now!
DeleteHow pretty. You must spend lots of time snipping your flowers and watering them. I've not managed any in pots this years.
ReplyDeleteMy husband is the one who waters them, I help him but Richard is the gardener, not me! Deadheading is something that also takes time!
DeleteI did enjoy the stroll through your garden, Kay...thank you. :)
ReplyDeleteIf you look closely, you will see Lee the lemon tree on the right side of the walkway up to our front door!
Delete"I come to the Garden Alone ..." such a familiar and favorite hymn! Your porch is filled with lovely plants, Kay!
ReplyDeleteI have always loved that hymn, I like it the best on the guitar!
DeleteI'm still catching up reading blogs from the second half of last week, so I've only now managed to read this. How lovely all your plants are! You've mentioned before that Richard is the main gardener in your household. There is something about the English and gardens, isn't there!
ReplyDeleteSo sweet to have that rose to remind you of your wonderful mother-in-law, and the plant your lovely aunt gave you.
Yes, Richard is the brains behind most things! LOL! And the English do love their gardens!
DeleteIt is nice to have a living thing to remind you of someone who is no longer with you. x
