Underdog wins at the Winter Olympics! Did anyone see this on the news this morning? (Many of you must have seen it last night but I only saw it today.) Ester Ledecka from the Czech Republic won the Gold Medal in the alpine women's Super G, only just beating the 2nd place finisher by one one-hundredth of a second! There, I do hope I have all that right, I do so get mixed up on numbers and I congratulate Ester Ledecka on her victory and am very happy for her. I LOVE it when someone just comes out of nowhere and is totally unexpected to win and then, they DO win and all the "experts" are flabbergasted about it! The American, Lindsey Vonn, had great expectations for victory but had a bad finish at the end of her run, and came in 6th, I believe. (That is the big headline here...however, she was most impressed by Ester Ledecka and said so...I am so glad. I like Lindsey Vonn myself and I like her even more really for having lost and being gracious about it.)
ANYWAY....here is what I MUST tell you. Ester Ledecka's mother is a figure skater (which you could expect) but her father is a....wait for it... a SINGER! He has been producing albums for the past 30 years! Why, you know I had to look him up! His name is JANEK LEDECKY. Of course, I had to watch several music videos and I found one that I really liked and wanted to share with you!
(Some of the older ones remind me very much of Nigel from "This Is Spinal Tap"!) "Turn it up to 11"!!
I love the video! Why, you can even see that Janek Ledecky can juggle! I am most impressed!
If you follow the Olympics closely, you might recognize the name "Ledecky"...Katie Ledecky is an American and is a 5 time Gold Medalist swimmer! Since her paternal grandfather is from the Czech Republic...well, look- read all about this just here!
No snowy mountain to show you...just a bit of snow from my yard in January!
Do you also like to root for the underdog? There is just something about someone coming ahead to win when no one expects it. That is what I love about sports..."it ain't over, till it's over"!
P.S. Not sure why it is Ester Ledecka not "Ledecky". Perhaps someone can tell me why this is so?
It is so satisfying when someone wins like this, when they were not expected to do so! And I love that video, Kay. There is a lot of talent in that family!
ReplyDeleteIt IS nice to see someone win unexpectedly! Glad you liked the video too! After I posted this, I found out that Ester's brother, Jonas designed her ski outfits AND that he is a successful illustrator. Lots of talent in that family indeed!
Deletebecause womens surnames have different endings in our language. greetings from prague.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for leaving me this comment!! You have made my day! Greetings from Georgia, USA! :-)
DeleteSuch an interesting post! Yes, in some slavic countries, surnames are gendered, so that male surnames end with y or i and female surnames end with a.
ReplyDeleteThat makes perfect sense! Thanks for telling me! Don't you love it that someone left me that comment above from Prague? That's why I love blogging! (Besides having my great blogging friends like you!!)
DeleteYou find the most interesting information.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Emma! Now you know where the Huffington Post gets all their ideas! LOL!
DeleteLeave it to you to track down the musical connection. You keep us on our toes.
ReplyDeleteYes, if there is a HINT of a musical connection, I am ON IT! :-)
DeleteYes, i love it when someone turns in the performance of a lifetime and wins big. Very interesting family history there, too.
ReplyDeleteAnd when they don't win big but are expected to...I want them to be gracious and appreciative of what they have accomplished!
DeleteI normally don't watch Olympic events much but I've liked the speed skaters, the skiers and the freestyle jump events. Huge height under the boards and six or seven turns yet they still manage to land nearly every time. Very impressive. Unusual singer.
ReplyDeleteMy TV viewing has been hit and miss lately, not much time to do anything these days.
DeleteOur commentators on the Olympics are terrible, it is better to watch with the sound turned off.
Interesting video clip - it's not quite David Gilmour, but it's much better than I can manage... I'm not a great sports fan, but do like it when the underdog does well (unless I favour the favourite, of course). Rochdale held Spurs to a 2-2 draw at the weekend. And England play scotland in the Six Nations at the weekend...that will be interesting. Love your header shot!
ReplyDeleteThe header shot is along the Eastbourne seafront, of course!
DeleteI so envy your sports watching in England, I was there once during the World Cup and the announcers on TV were wonderful, they had such witty things to say and didn't just BLAB constantly! I do like sports, I passed that love on to my son! :-)
I'm bingeing on the Winter Olympics! Love, love, love it! :)
ReplyDeleteI'll be having withdrawals when it comes to an end this week!
The Games are absolutely wonderful...the competitors are so brave, win or lose...actually, in my opinion, there are no losers. They are inspirational...and there are some wonderful back stories.
Oh! I bet you have TERRIFIC coverage in Australia! Here in the USA, not so much! You have wonderful back stories? Yes, we get them but only if they are American! I understand that you might want to concentrate on your home country but there are so many interesting stories that we could see!
DeleteYes, I know that if they are in the Olympics, they are all really winners to begin with...but if they come in 6th in a race, I want them to acknowledge that fact and to graciously congratulate those who came ahead!
I am always rooting for the underdog...but can you IMAGINE winning by 1/100th of a second? How do you even make that call?! I will listen to the video next. Have a great week, Kay! xo Diana
ReplyDeleteI KNOW! I had to go back and see if I had that number correctly, it is astonishing! You know me, Diana, I am all about the music!
DeleteThat's so neat about her father - I hadn't heard that.
ReplyDeleteNeat! You are like me, I love that word, use it all the time. I think it was much more used in the 60's rather than cool. And I should know, I remember the 1960's very well!
DeleteLove your heart warming post! It is always great to see the under dog win! Perhaps she changed her name as sometimes actors do? Love the video and just love the history of this family!
ReplyDeleteHello Eggs In My Pocket!
DeleteLovely to see your comment here!
If you look at the comments above, I had two commenters tell me that the names are gendered, so that the male would end in y or I and the female in a.
You are correct though, many actors and others in show biz change their names...Cary Grant was Archibald Leach!
:-)
I've been following the Winter Olympics as well, great fun.
