Hello, my friends! Went to the doctor today and when I was asked what was the problem, I said I either had the flu or it was a very good impression of one. "No fever" the nurse said to me in an accusatory tone. My reply, "I can be very sick without running a fever". I smiled and asked after the health of the nurse and the doctor (after all, I AM still breathing!) So...my advice to you is do NOT be your normal cheerful self when you at the doctor's office, instead moan and carry on so they will know you are sick!
On enough medication to knock out a horse, so this post might be a bit unevenly written. (What else is new, right?) HA! The doctor got a flu swab from me but I think she thought it was a waste of time.
I felt like saying, "I told you I was sick!"
Note: in England if you say you are sick, folks kind of step away from you, they think you are going to throw up! Instead, they use the word "ill". We know the word, of course, but still, don't you think most Americans say "sick"?
A good impression- I found this for you!
I have read that Elvis Presley thought this was THE best impression of him that anyone had ever done- Andy Kaufman on "The Tonight Show" in 1977, I think. Elvis died in August of the year...when I heard of his death on the radio, I pulled over on the side of the road. I was that shocked.
Hi Kay - hope you improve ... take care - Hilary
ReplyDeleteThanks, Hilary. I bet you recognize my header photo just now!
DeleteI hope you feel better!
ReplyDeleteThank you, fellow Georgia gal. x
DeleteOh- I hope you feel better, Kay! My grandson has the flu, too, and I worry about him because he has a compromised immune system. He's a little trooper though and doesn't complain at all. I hope you get well soon---soon----soon!
ReplyDeleteI remember that SLN skit about Elvis. He died on our 2nd anniversary and I could not believe it. I guess I thought he would be around until we were all old. It was just plain sad.
Have a good night and get some sleep- xo Diana
So many have the flu this year, it is scary. I hope your grandson is better soon! xx
DeleteFeel better soon. You know the drill... lots of fluids and plenty of rest. I remember seeing Andy Kaufman do that impression on Johnny Carson. I agree with The King. It's the best impersonation.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Emma! When I was thinking of a good impression, you know I thought of this first thing!
DeleteI hope that you are feeling better, Kay! I agree that you can have the flu without running a fever. Maybe you're like me. My body temperature usually runs a little over 96º F, so if I'm running 98.6º F, I have a fever! I had a mild case of what I call the flu 10 or 11 days ago. I always make sure that I get the shot. I hope that you do too! I rarely hear an American use the word "ill." In Canada we used "ill" as well when I was little, but I think that has given way to "sick." All the best to you!
ReplyDeleteYes, my body temp has sometimes been low when I have it checked. I DID get the shot, nine days ago! The doctor says it doesn't kick in until 14 days...that is what she said anyway! LOL!
DeletePraying you get well soon!
ReplyDeletePoor you! Get well soon, and don't overdo things as soon as you start to feel a little better - I know what I am talking about, because it is the mistake I always make...!
ReplyDeletePax means peace, yes. Funnily enough, IKEA (the Swedish furniture company) have chosen "Pax" as the name for my bedroom wardrobe.
Yes, I do the same, in my haste to get back into things, I do too much!
DeleteHey! I just looked up the PAX bedroom wardrobe from IKEA, pretty! Also, I was surprised that in England, one always has wardrobes for their clothes, instead of built-in closets like here. It must be the same in Germany!
My friend in Canada, who is of British descent, says she is "unwell." I think that sounds so much more dignified that the word "sick."
ReplyDeleteHope you are feeling better quickly!
I agree! "Unwell", that is what I shall say from now on!
Delete(I also like the word "shall" but the computer will ask you to change it if you use it in a letter!)
Get well soon, Kay. I do understand about doctors and nurses.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sylvia!
DeleteTake care of yourself, Kay. After my husband had surgery in December, he and I have been a bit germphobic. So many people have been sick in our area (sick with respiratory, not stomach), even family. We have hibernated and taken out stock in Purell. LOL
ReplyDeleteThank you, Kay! Your hibernation and the great use of Purell makes good sense to me!
DeleteHope your hubby is better!
Peace and good health to you ! The flu bug is terrible this year. I love the PAX archway. Very unique!
ReplyDeleteThe Pax archway is at the Monastery here in Rockdale County. We are so lucky to have it so close by!
DeleteHope you're feeling better soon.
ReplyDeleteThanks, getting better all the time!
DeleteSo sorry to hear you are sick, ill, unwell! Wishing you peace and healing and a quick recovery. Take good care of yourself!
ReplyDeleteThank you, my sweet friend! Hope YOU are doing well and taking care of yourself. x
DeleteI miss Andy Kaufman. Elvis too, for that matter. Feel better soon!
ReplyDeleteBoth of them gone too soon.
DeleteThanks for your well wishes!
hi kay! I find myself trying to look 'together' at the doctor's office which is both silly and self-defeating. I hope you're feeling better and better.
ReplyDeletenice to see you're doing well xo
love kj
Hello kj!
DeleteYou will laugh when I tell you this: as a kid, I went to the doctor a very sick little girl. Sitting on the paper-lined table, the doctor came in and said, "And how are you today".
To which I replied, "I'm fine! How are you?"
My poor mother said, "No, Kay, you have to tell him how sick you are".
Gee whiz, I always DID find the wrong thing to say! LOL!
P.S. I feel terrible today but you know I have my make up on. Trust me, it is needed.
Lovely to see your comment here and thanks for your well wishes. xx
I dread getting colds or flu as I already have chest problems and never seem to get rid of it fully unless I have steroid inhalers or injections like the last time. It's been that way for decades though but doesn't get any easier with age.
ReplyDeleteHope you recover soon. There's several bad strains of flu doing the rounds over here at the moment.
Yes, age seems to make everything more difficult doesn't it?
DeleteStill, I hope I am getting better and I thank you for your well wishes! Hey, I come from some pretty good stock so I should recover nicely! Love from Lady Kay...but you may call me Kay. :-)
Hope you're skipping about again soon, Kay. A bit of TLC is called for! I hate going to the doctor. It takes something really dire to get me there and, invariably, I'm made to feel as though I shouldn't be wasting their time. And it's full of sick people - not necessarily vomiting... :-)
ReplyDeleteThat is exactly the way I felt there! As if I wasn't really quite that ill for them! Gee, sorry I am not much of a complainer, it works against you at the doctor's!
DeleteSkipping about, that sounds like something I could do just a few years ago, I even have a photo of me doing that on my blog...I will have to find it and re post it. Thanks!
Also, Mike, I am not able to leave comments on your blog...and I am so sorry you couldn't see them, they were SUCH insightful comments! LOL!
I think the use of 'sick' and 'ill' is a little more subtle in the UK than sick just meaning throwing up. I suspect that it may vary between areas. However I would have though 'sick' is generally regarded as less serious than 'ill'. So if you had a cold you would be sick but if you had influenza then you would be ill. In my experience with having had 'flu three times in my life going to the doctor would be an impossibility: getting out of bed is hard enough. There is, by the way, a Brit saying "Throwing a sickie" which means taking a day off and claiming to be sick.
ReplyDeleteI only know the southeast coast of England, just that little corner and when I said I felt sick there, I noticed folks backing away from me!
DeleteI rarely take time off from work, I think the last time I had a sick day was...just figured it out, it was about 10 years ago-last time I had the flu. "Throwing a sickie" is not something I would ever do. :-)
I hardly ever get a fever. I always had a hard time convincing my parents to let me stay away from school :-)

Ha, me and you both! Also, as a kid I could always EAT even when I was very unwell! Not with this flu though, you can't eat much.
DeleteMy temp runs low so when it's normal I'm sick! Yes, most folks around here say sick but when it's serious the work turns to "ill"...it just sounds so much worse! The flu has kept our hospital full and the employees calling in sick too. Of course the flu shot was basically useless this year. Anyway, feel better soon and this flu is a killer so I'm glad you went to see a Doc! Take care!
ReplyDeleteYes, I got that flu shot and got the flu anyway. Supposedly, the flu would have been worse without the shot!
DeleteThis flu is a scary thing, we have had 37 deaths in Georgia from it.
Never knew the difference between sick and ill. Lol.
ReplyDeleteYou would if folks backed away from you! HA!
