Do you know why Mozart didn't keep any chickens?
(Answer at the end of this post.)
Hello, my friends! Nobody here but us chickens! When you know someone who has chickens you feel obligated to take photos of them. I do anyway! See the pretty yellowish one above? I asked if they knew what kind of chicken it was. They didn't, so I looked it up! From what I have read, I believe this to be an Orpington Buff (buff for the yellowish color) and would you believe it, the breed is from Orpington, Kent which is in south-east England! What is more, that area is not very far from where Richard was born and raised! There, you see...even a dang chicken can make me have a link to England! Honestly, I don't look for these kind of connections, they just happen naturally.
It is entirely possible that the chicken might be another breed. If I type this in a smaller font, perhaps no one will notice and believe me to be an expert on poultry.
Now...in answer to my question at the beginning of this post.
Why didn't Mozart have chickens?
Because they kept saying, "Bach, Bach, Bach"!

Foghorn Leghorn...I always thought he was funny! Voiced by the marvelous Mel Blanc, he was also the voice of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Tweety Bird, Sylvester the Cat, Yosemite Sam...the list goes on and on! Hope you enjoy the little cartoon.
The joke is a good one. foghorn Leghorn was one of my favorite cartoon characters. As far as the breed of chicken I only know there are bunches of them.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Emma! If you laugh at one of my jokes, you are my friend forever!
DeleteHi Kay - strange, but true, I wrote about them in the A-Z this year ... they appear under N for Native breeds ... the history of the Orpington is an interesting one ... and I love those cartoons ... cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteThanks, Hilary! I looked at your post, so interesting!
DeleteHappy to share the cartoon with you. Cheers!
There is something very homely about chickens around a (farm) house or cottage, but of course, like all domestic animals, they require responsible owners and a lot of looking after (and cleaning up after them), so I won't get any myself ;-)
ReplyDeleteThese days, I am readying "The Book of Household Management", published in 1861. Several chapters are dedicated to keeping and raising poultry, including a detailed description of what a good chicken coop must look like, with instructions on how to keep it all clean and nice for the chickens, what to feed them, and so on. There is also a list of breeds that were common in those days, and what their advantages/disadvantages were; if you were looking for bigger eggs, or more beautiful, docile hens, or fleshy animals to sell, you could have your pick.
Love the sound of that book myself!
DeleteYou know my Dad knows how to take care of chickens, he needs to write a book himself! :-)
Love fresh eggs, they are the best.
Good old Foghorn - I have not seen him for a long time :)
ReplyDeleteI grew up with chickens in our back yard, and have fond memories of them. But we never had a pretty one like that Orpington Buff. Our were always boring black. I wonder why that was ??
The other chickens they have are black and white ones, they said they were "Dominikers" and I looked that up too, they are really "Dominique" and they are pretty too and most likely, brought to England during the colonial times!
DeleteIt's been a long time since I've seen any Foghorn Leghorn, but it still made me smile. I've thought about raising chickens myself a few times. They pay for themselves in eggs. I doubt I have the room for it right now though. Or that my cats would be comfortable with them.
ReplyDeleteWhen you keep chickens, you will understand the phrase, "a fox in the henhouse"! It must be worth all the trouble to have those fresh eggs though.
Deletethere truly is something about chickens that make me smile...wonderful memories of days on the farm. Hope you are having a lovely summer day !
ReplyDeleteHey MA! Thank you! I didn't grow up on a farm but we had friends who kept chickens and I remember collecting the eggs and being careful around the big rooster!
DeleteSaying "Bach!" eh? Heeheehee! It's a good groaner and i'll have to tell someone this one soon.
ReplyDeleteAs for the chicken, from what i once read, if it's a Buff Orpington it won't have any pinfeathers. That is the extent of my knowledge of poultry keeping.
Yes, please send that joke around the world. We need more laughter!
DeleteLOL- Love your little chicken joke! lol Somehow I KNEW you would find a way to tie that chicken to England...expert or not. lol xo Diana
ReplyDeleteEverything seems to go back to England for me somehow, I have had that connection all my life, I don't know why.
DeleteFunny, Foghorn Leghorn!
ReplyDeleteI say, I say we Southern gals appreciate that accent!
DeleteOh that Mozart joke was a groaner! I'm a Foghorn Leghorn fan too, that blowhard.
ReplyDeleteSo funny to think that the same voice who did the Southern accent of Foghorn Leghorn also did that Yankee accent of Bugs Bunny! You know you loved the Mozart joke, admit it! :-)
DeleteKay, I love the chicken joke and can not wait to tell Emma(g.daughter). She has chickens and yes indeed I have taken photos. I love and truly miss Loony Tunes. Blessings for a great weekend, xoxo, Susie
ReplyDeleteHope she likes the joke too! Love my Loony Tunes, I fear they are still a huge influence on my life! LOL!
DeleteBlessings to you, my friend. x
I think of them as Buff Orpintons. I think they are mentioned towards the end of the book Daddy Longlegs when Judy is on a farm.
ReplyDeleteYES! When you write it like that- BUFF ORPINTONS- I also think I have seen that in a book, and it makes me wonder which one! (I don't know the one you mention though.)
DeleteThanks for your comment!! :-)
And a good joke! My granddaughters will be here for dinner and they are just at the age to love riddles and jokes.
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome to pass along any of my jokes! I like silly jokes and riddles, even some kids tell me I am too "cheesy"!
DeleteLove the joke and I've always been a Foghorn Leghorn fan, I say, I say.
ReplyDeleteI say, I say...as someone who lives in Georgia, you should appreciate the Southern accent by Mel Blanc!
DeleteBrilliant, Kay. I wouldn't recommend Orpington, though, from what I can remember. Did you also know that 'the Buffs' is the nickname for the East Kent Regiment? "Steady, the Buffs".
ReplyDeleteSTEADY THE BUFFS...no, I didn't know that so I thank you telling me! Also, I have a name to do more research about now...Captain William Douglas-Home.
DeleteFoghorn Leghorn was always one of my favourites. I've visited Orpington many times as it was near where I had friends in South London years ago.
ReplyDeleteRichard is from Croydon and hey, I just looked it up, there is only 8.6 miles between Croydon and Orpington.
DeleteA clever nab was Mel - one who gave us much pleasure and many laughs throughout the years. :)
ReplyDeleteI adore my cartoons, besides being funny, they also gave me an appreciation for classical music and for that, I am thankful.
DeleteMy neighbor has a voice (really!) like Foghorn Leghorn!! I love chickens, but am not sure I want some of my own. Real upkeep seems messier than I want. Thanks for the picture.
ReplyDeleteI say, I say if I had a neighbor with that voice, I would be laughing all day! Chickens are MESSY, best to have friends who have them and they GIVE you the eggs!
DeleteCute joke and fun cartoon! One of my favorite characters! My next door neighbor has chickens and they frequently make their way to our yard when she lets them free range. Her mother told us yesterday that we need to kill the fox in our woods because it's killing the chickens. I was taken back by that because I don't own the fox and frankly they have woods behind their house too so I'm guessing that crafty fox is living closer to the KFC than in our creepy woods! Have a good week!
ReplyDeleteKill the fox in your woods, that is a strange thing to tell you! Foxes and coyotes are big problems where my Dad lives, and no one "owns" those guys, they are in the wild!
DeleteHope you have a good week, watch out for those crafty foxes pretending to be owned by you! LOL!
Oh groan: "Bach! Bach! Bach!" I, too, always want to track down the names of things. Your many connections to England crack me up, Kay!
ReplyDeleteHey Louise, Just now seeing your comment...it is Feb. 2019! Glad you liked my joke, you will be my friend forever.
