London!
London! We were in London in September and I have such fond memories of this exciting city. I really loved walking beside the Thames and over it! We walked across FOUR bridges and even though it was an overcast day, that really worked in my favor since it made it easier to see things a bit clearer. One thing, and this was startling to me was the way that the water looked as if it went one way and then, quite the other way. This is very much the way that Monet painted it. Perhaps all deep water looks that way, I don't know...I only know that the tide was very high the day that we saw it, and Monet got it JUST RIGHT.
You can really see the Thames better in a video...so you know Richard has one here for you! Where were you on Sept. 11, 2014 at 10AM, London time? Now you know where we were!
What a lovely memory.
ReplyDeleteI love London and the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben!
DeleteGray grubby London!
ReplyDeleteJust as I remember it also!
10 am? You should have got on a tourist boat.
Oh, it was wonderful! It was a gray day but is made it easier to see all the stained glass windows in the churches we visited!
DeleteOh what fun! England was our first overseas (foreign) trip with our children. I would sure love to go back again.
ReplyDeleteI always want to go back there again!
DeleteYou will laugh - I looked it up in my 2014 diary. Sept. 11, 2014, was a Thursday. 10 am GMT is 11 am in Germany, and I was at the office that time. So banal compared to what you were doing!
ReplyDeleteAfter I'd been to London many, many times during the 1990s and knew it quite well, it is now more than 8 years since my last visit. These days, when I am in England, the precious little time I have is spent up in Yorkshire with the family. Too far away from London to just go there for a day.
I hope to make it to Yorkshire one day and from looking at your photos when you visit make me want to go even more!
DeleteLet's see, we were in London in April of 1997, we took C. to the Tower of London and several other spots. We also went to Windsor...and LEGOLAND! I bet LEGOLAND wasn't on your list of places to visit! And guess what, LEGOLAND automatically goes to those all capitals, I didn't do it! HA!
I love London as well! A wonderful mix of old and new.

Absolutely true, I am fascinated by London! xx
DeleteTempted to say "Monet, that's what I want" - so I did! I feel you are owed an apology from the whole of the UK for it being a bit of a grey day. But London is a great city for walking in and strolling along the river is fun - so much to see. The Thames is deeper than it used to be.
ReplyDeleteOh, how funny. You will laugh, I had to ask Richard what you meant by that! (Play on "MONEY That's what I want. Sorry, I take everything literally.) Don't worry about the grey day, we loved it. It was cool and very pleasant for walking which is what we did a lot of!! I know that the Thames is also not as polluted as it once was, that is what I have read anyway. Thanks for your comment, Mike!
DeleteOn September 11th, 2014 I was here in my cabin...I probably did a run (in my car) to the supermarket...and I probably was proof-reading my article ready for submission to the local rag.
ReplyDelete10 am London time...I would've probably been watching a TV show or the news...as it would've been 7 pm here. :)
The local rag, that is what Richard calls our local newspaper too!
DeleteFunny thing to think of you clear on the other side of the world from England, the Land Down Under!
Thanks for sharing the pictures. That is one of many places I've never been so I'm thankful to see a glimpse of London.
ReplyDeleteWe took lots of photos of London, so I will show you more! I think I could live in the British Museum, wish they would let me!
DeleteHow I long to be in London again!
ReplyDeleteMe too!
DeleteLove London, it always wears me out. We'll be going back this summer.
ReplyDeleteTake me with you!!
DeleteSince it was on a Thursday, i was probably at work!
ReplyDeleteThat is where I am too on most Thursdays, like today!
DeleteThe last time I was actually in London was 1967! I've been in England a few times since then, but not London.....Nostalgia is creeping into my heart like a London fog.
ReplyDeleteWow, wish I could have seen London in the 60's. I was such a Beatles fan and well, all things British!! I first saw London in May of 1981 and all the media was abuzz with LADY Diana sightings.
DeleteMonet's painting is lovely, Kay. I'm glad that you have such happy memories. My hubby and I spent two weeks in London last June (made possible by being able to stay in my SIL and BIL's flat). It was absolutely wonderful, and I long to go back. Happy Friday!
ReplyDeleteHi Kay
ReplyDeleteYou must have been standing on the Southbank at the time- where I hope to see the (nearly) 80 year old Peggy Seeger next month. I will give the Thames your best regards.
Henry
Like the painting. London is an interesting city. I usually go round all the parks, gardens and certain outlying districts though as a tour of all the galleries and other paying indoor attractions in central London can be an expensive weekend if you don't know which ones are free to enter. Visited most of them luckily when they were cheap in the 1980s. £40 now for Madame Tussauds and the Sea Life Aquarium one person plus cheap hostel digs. Loads more if you have a family. Nice city though.
ReplyDeleteOh London.....how I love thee! I've been several times but my last visit was in 2004! On September 11th, 2014 at 10:00, it was 5:00 here (I believe!)
ReplyDeleteand I'm sure I was sleeping. :-)
