"On My Own" that is the title of the post by Denzil Pugh where he wrote about walking on the north side of the Rockdale River Trail for the first time. I urge you to click on that link and read his post! His description of the sun dappled trail beside the South River, where you can hear the plop of frogs and turtles...he got it just right!
Denzil died on May 12th and his memorial service will be tomorrow. You may read his obituary here. I wasn't sure of his age but I see from his obituary that he was only 37.
I hope that someone will mention that Denzil Pugh had a blog and that he considered it an important creative endeavor of his life. Do you know why most people have blogs? It is because they are writers! It is not something that you do for money or fame, it is something that you ARE. Denzil wrote of many things...his love of music and books and his funny but perfectly accurate observations of working in a book store. The posts where he wrote of his strong faith are especially meaningful to me. I think that the trails of Rockdale County must have been very special to him, he wrote of them most lovingly. His brother has requested that in his honor, that one may give to the Path Foundation, (the organization which is responsible for the trails here.)

"Bridge Over Troubled Water" is one of the songs that Denzil mentioned quite often on his blog, and he really liked Simon & Garfunkel....so that is the song that I have here in his honour.
And because I am Georgia Girl With An English Heart...I have flowers from England for him...

DeleteYou are so right about why (most) people blog! I've been on about why I am a blogger a few times on my blog already, and although my main reason for blogging has changed over the years, I can not imagine NOT to blog anymore, and hope I'll be able to keep doing this for many years to come.

DeleteI have written since I was about 10 years old, used to fill notebooks with all my thoughts and observations! I feel a bit embarrassed to read all the other great blogs and compare them to mine. But hey, I say what I want to say! And like you, I hope to keep doing this!
At the memorial service for Denzil, nothing was mentioned of Denzil's blog.
Thank you, Kay, for this post about Denzil and his writing. I visited his blog and read many of the articles he posted and my regret is that I did not read them sooner as it seems so few knew of his observations shared through his writing. He was very definitely a writer and book lover as well.

DeleteHe was an interesting man and his writing was wonderful. I went to his blog and read some of his posts. I'm so sorry he passed so young.
ReplyDeleteHis mother died last year in May also. He seemed very settled into his own apartment in Dallas and he had a great job that he loved. He even told me in a comment that he was happy. I am glad that he has those words on his blog.

DeleteHis post is a good description of modern life. Very often I see people in the park busy talking on their cell phones or texting. I wonder why they bothered to come to the park if they were not going to enjoy it.

DeleteAnd Denzil had a full music scholarship to college and he loved music, he wrote about it a lot.
