Happy Birthday To The REAL Lord of the Manor!

Another Birthday?

It's evil, malicious...
it's heartless and vicious...
a birthday's a dastardly foe...
Relentless...unceasing...
your age keeps increasing!

And someday it might even show!

(I totally stole this from a birthday card that was from the collection of cards from my mother-in-law's 80TH birthday.  Yes, I do copy out good rhymes from cards, doesn't everyone?  HA!)

Happy Birthday to Peter, my dear father-in-law in England!  So wonderful to see you last month, I hope you have recovered from some of my cooking!  Loved making those fruit salads for you, those grapes from Spain and the apples from Italy were wonderful, but there is just nothing like those English strawberries!   Of course, I wrote about being grateful for gluten free restaurants but the very BEST cooking was at your home.  My very favorite meal is a Chicken Roast Dinner with your roast potatoes, they are my favorite.  And your selection of wine to accompany the meal is excellent!   :-)

Forget Downton Abbey, a Englishman's home is his castle and this is what a REAL Lord of the Manor looks like, along with his Lady and the REAL boss of the house, the DOG!  (My in-inlaws are so nice, they won't mind me showing you in their gorgeous dressing gowns, will they?...Uh, okay, there Joan, Peter?....Here's hoping they won't mind!)  Love you both!  You HAVE to be the best sports in the world to have ME as a daughter in law!!

Please, my friends, leave best wishes for a happy birthday for Peter, or as I and all my American friends would say, "Pee-DER"!  Sorry, that is just the way we say it!  Anybody else having a birthday in October, you must all be the best, if you are born in the same month as this guy!

  6. You don't mean to say your mother-in-law is 80?! Well, mine is, too (she turned 80 this year in March) and doesn't show it, her skin is like silk!
Oh, but here I am, going on about the loveliest English ladies we know, while it is your dear father-in-law's birthday. Happy Birthday, Peter! (It doesn't sound nothing like Pee-Der when I say it...My accent is pure Yorkshire, he he)

    1. Joan was born the same year as my Dad, 1927, but Joan was born in December of that year, whereas my Dad was born in April, you do the math! (We were there the year she did turn 80, and I made a note of some of the rhymes from her birthday cards, I really love the greeting cards in England!)
And knowing Peter, he does not mind one bit sharing the spotlight with lovely ladies, English or otherwise! :-) Joan has such a great sense of style and fashion, very much like you and your Mum!
And I am very sure your accent is pure Yorkshire, just like mine is pure Sussex! HA!

  16. I must say - that robe is astounding. I knew my Grandad was a man of taste of elegance, but that robe transcends those paltry descriptors. I hope to see him wearing that soon, and I hope he had a terrific birthday!

Much Love from your favorite grandson,
    Christopher

(P.S. - Endless love to you too Mom!)

    1. Thank you, son, for leaving this sweet comment. I know Peter will read it and be tickled pink.
Remember when you used to call them Nana & Dad, since they pronounce "Grand-DAD" with such an emphasis, you picked up on that and that is why you called him that...that worked as long as you still called your father "Daddy"!
Thanks again, Christoph, you are the best grandson of the best granddad!
      Love You!
      Mom

  19. Happy Birthday Peter! (Yes, we here Down Under pronounce Peter, Peter - I'm not stuttering)!

Time to crack open one of those bottles of wine, I'd say...even though I'm writing this and Peter's birthday has passed, no doubt...but every day is a celebration...isn't it?

  22. A true Englishman; a lord in his castle with his beloved dog at his feet (not forgetting his wench by his side!). Happy birthday, Peter (pronounced properly, as a fellow Englishman).

And there is another birthday in my family this month - my son will be 24 on the 28th.

  23. Hi Kay

Belated best wishes to Peter. He was in fine fettle when we saw him last month and is quintessentially (old) English. That is old in the sense that they do not make them like that any more.
