Stone Mountain on Saturday and the Yellow Daisies were just beginning to bloom at the base of the mountain but as we climbed higher, it made quite a difference in the blooms. In the photo above, this is close to the halfway mark and the blooms were incredible! The fragrance is such a light scent, quite wonderful but I don't think that many people noticed it. In fact, there were lots of people climbing the mountain but we only saw a handful stop and admire these flowers. We can't understand it. I told Richard that perhaps it is because it is mistaken for bitterweed which is very common and grows in pastures. Sure enough, we saw a comment to this effect on Facebook.
You'll never guess what we saw in the Confederate Hall, the building at the base of Stone Mountain...they have a display case and since there is a sky lift to the top of Stone Mountain, there is a small sign showing sky lifts from around the world and one of them is...
From Beachy Head, which is in Eastbourne, England!
We were surprised to see this! All the other sky lifts shown were actual sky lifts. We think that this was used at Beachy Head as the lighthouse was being built. Was it ever used for tourists as a sky lift? I don't believe so, but I could be wrong. You can see from the photo above that the men are just holding on for dear life, it looks to me that they are the workers who have been working on it.
This lighthouse is no longer used, but it is still there at Beachy Head and it makes for a lovely photo!
Oh, and when we are at Stone Mountain, do we take the sky lift to the top? NEVER!
I'd climb too, Kay! I love the header with you in it. And the yellow daisies are so cheerful! Take care!
ReplyDeleteCome on, let's climb Stone Mountain together!
DeleteIf you are ever in Atlanta, Stone Mountain is a MUST SEE!
Oooohhhh, the yellow daisies are so nice ~ I also can't imagine how people walk right by these!!!! And I don't blame you for skipping the sky lift ~ I like to think that I'd choose to walk too! Hope you guys had a nice Labor Day weekend!
ReplyDeleteWe took lots of photos, but I am saving them for a post on Yellow Daisies, they deserve a post all alone!
DeleteHave you climbed Stone Mountain before? If not, you should try to during the first week of November, the leaves on the trees are magnificent! (How will it be this year with all the rain, better or not? We have no idea, we have never seen this much rain!!)
Those daisies are such a splash of happy color! I'd be taking a ton of photos of them too. As for the sky lift... I don't think I could bear the height. I might lose my lunch, no thank you.
ReplyDeleteHa! We did take a ton of photos of the Yellow Daisies, so look out for them!
DeleteThe sky lift is for sissies.
ReplyDeleteHee hee, as long as I possibly can I will be marching up that mountain and leaving the sky lift for others!
DeleteYou know how much I love the colour yellow, and flowers, and pictures of Stone Mountain (and Arabia)! Therefore, a picture that combines all three - Yellow Flowers on Stone Moountain - can hardly be topped!
ReplyDeleteNice coincidence that they would show a place you know so well, thousands of miles away.
You would have LOVED all this yellow on the mountain, just wait til I show you ALL the photos, and you know I will!
DeleteIsn't that something that of all places they had that photo of the lighthouse at Beachy Head? I don't recall seeing it before, that display must be fairly new, but then, we try not to spend too much time inside buildings when we are at Stone Mountain!!
I love all that yellow on the mountain. What a beautiful splash of colour. That last photo is also great. I love lighthouses!
ReplyDeleteDear Martha,
DeleteYou would take SO many photos on that mountain! You should see the one that Richard took of a butterfly near the Yellow Daisies, I want him to enter it into a photo contest!!
I love lighthouses too, isn't that red and white one a real beauty!! :-)
It might be fun to take a sky lift up or down once, just to see what the view is like from there. But that would be it.
ReplyDeleteYou need to visit Stone Mountain! The sky lift and the walk up trail end up at the same spot, on top of the mountain!
DeleteOn the sky lift, you are basically going over trees and you see the carving out the window and then, you are at the top!
See, I have been on it, just once or twice but I can't tell you how many times I have climbed the mountain! :-)
Oh, this is so beautiful! Small yellow flowers and that view:-) Great place to spent time
ReplyDeleteYou would love it, I am sure of it.
DeleteThe views are great but even if it is cloudy, you can admire the clouds, if it is foggy, you are in amazement at the gray...if it is sunny and hazy, you feel like one of the vultures circling overhead...you get the idea...whatever nature provides there, you appreciate it since it you are in your own natural world!
Just so beautiful. I love to take those sky lifts when I can. Amazing photos- xo Diana
ReplyDeleteThanks, Diana. I can't speak for anywhere else, but if you are ever at Stone Mountain, just take the walk up trail. If I can do it, anybody can! ;-)
DeleteWhere's the fun in a lift? You need to be on the ground to appreciate all the little details and the scents. Lovely yeloow flowers and loved the lighthouse ;) x
ReplyDeleteJulie,
DeleteI am in total agreement with you! The flowers! The trees! The sun shining on that gray rock!
How about that picture of Beachy Head lighthouse at Stone Mountain, eh? My in-laws live in Eastbourne!
I have only been to Stone Mountain once a few years ago when we visited my cousin who lives in Norcross (now Peachtree Corners) GA and YES we did take the lift. Great view from the top, Kay. Maybe you should just try it once.
ReplyDeleteGoodness me, you see the same view at the top when you walk up the trail, only you see so much more than being whisked up there by the sky lift! Still, if that was the only way I could get there, I would happily take it. As for me, as long as I can walk it, I will do so!
DeleteI'd use the lift!
ReplyDeleteNo, you would not...I really think you would see how easy it is to walk it! Do like I do, pretend you are admiring the view when you are really catching your breath! It works for me!
DeleteIt's funny how people seem to be in such a rush to get to places, even the top of a mountain, that they forget to enjoy the journey.
ReplyDeleteEnjoying the journey, that is exactly so. But even some of those on the walkup trail just use it as a fitness training, some of the running it and missing all the natural beauty.
DeleteWhy not jog around a football field and run up bleachers is what I am always thinking...
