When I was a child, one of very favorite songs that I enjoyed my sister playing on the piano was this one: Come Back To Sorrento. This same song was used in a Chuck Jones cartoon that our son really liked called, "The Cricket in Times Square". It is a beautiful tune and when I found this video of Pavarotti singing it, I wanted to share it with you. He is accompanied by Meatloaf, of all people. However, I think he is really gutsy to share the stage with the masterful voice of Luciano Pavarotti who is sadly no longer with us, but we can still enjoy that wonderful voice.
Believe it or not, I watched an award show last night...the Teen Choice Awards, and I was really saddened by what passes for music these days. (And I couldn't watch all of it, and sometimes I had to mute it just to be able to stand it.) Sometimes, you have to TRY to understand what is going on in the world, but honestly, most of the time, it just astounds me.
(And I have taken a long time this evening trying to understand how to download my own videos to Youtube, but I haven't figured it out yet! A good bit of my time is spent pondering, it seems...)
Come Back To Sorrento is one of my favorite songs from years ago. I am not fond of most of the music today either- xo Diana
ReplyDeleteAnd it wasn't just the music that offended me, but somehow, all of it was offensive. The only hint of charm was from these young men in One Direction when they were not there and did a funny bit from London. It was like a breath of fresh air and much appreciated amongst a monkey on a shoulder (literally) and the hype and the smugness.
DeleteWhen I was 19 I went on holiday to Sorrento, and bought a beautiful jewellery box of inlaid wood. It is musical, and plays Come Back to Sorrento. I still have it. Freya would roll her eyes if you told her you liked One Direction, so uncool (apparently).
ReplyDelete...but I just listened to it, and enjoyed it, lol. Perhaps that is why it is uncool!
DeleteOh Tracey, lucky you to have that music box!
DeleteAnd my son also would agree with your Freya! They must only be popular with the very young teenagers, you know the ones who are about 8 or 9 years old!
And I had no idea who or where they were from, it is just one of the few songs on the radio that I can sing along with!
I think I'd need the lyrics to sing along, my English ear can't catch all the words. But the music is good! And I love the VW camper van.
ReplyDeleteScriptor,
DeleteIt is a fun video, isn't it? Do you think they are trying to sound American? They are all from England, I think the blonde one is from Ireland.
Do you like Come Back to Sorrento?
I love Come Back to Sorrento (actually I love anything Pavarotti sings!)
ReplyDeleteThere is some good music around but it probably wasn't played on the Teen Choice Awards lol. I like Snow Patrol, Adele, Gotye and The Paper Kites amongst others. I really don't like rap music and some of the music videos are just porn :/
We 'oldies' can't figure it out due to that thing called the "Generation Gap: :)
Dear Annie,
DeleteThe trouble with me is that I love melody and that is sadly lacking in anything that I hear. I also like Keane, I bet you would too.
And proud to be an "oldie" if it means I know good music when I hear it! :-) (Still can't believe I even tried to watch that awards show!)
Hi Kay, I've been listening to Keane and you are right, I like them too :)
DeleteOh,yes! I KNEW you would! :-)
DeleteHahaha...I love your sense of humour, Kay. It is subtle, but hilarious.
ReplyDeletePavarotti and Meatloaf? Now that is one heck of a surprising combination. I never would have expected that.
You are brave to have watched the Teen Choice Awards. I don't think I'd be able to, mute button or not.
I do know that song! I'm not sure how I know it; either my kids have played it, or I've heard it on the TV. And I really like it. It is a really fun song to sing along with. Has a great beat to it.
Hey Martha!
DeleteIt makes me happy to know that at least one person understands my sense of HUMOUR! (And I didn't know you spelled humor the way the Brits do, HUMOUR. Interesting.)
Pavarotti was a beautiful soul.
ReplyDeleteWith teens in the house, i have to hear some of what passes for music these days, and i'm glad mine also still like other music from their earlier training.
Dear Mimi,
DeleteAh, the voice of Pavarotti, makes you feel like all the emotions in the whole world are in that one voice.
And I love that you gave your children EARLIER TRAINING, good for you!
I often listen to opera and classical just so my daughter will have the experience. At this point she's been pretty isolated from popular music (we don't have TV) and I'd love to keep it that way but am sure she'll catch on sometime. It's funny because when I was a kid in the 80's I loved The Monkees and then in high school I loved The Beatles and David Bowie. Then in college I loved the 30's and 40's big band music. Right now I'm into classical but still appreciate the music of the 70's and maybe some 80's. Everything after though... I can leave it. I just saw a poster that reminded me of this post, too. It says "It's not that I'm old. It's just that your music really does stink." Lol.
ReplyDeleteHey Sonia,
DeleteIt sounds as if we like the same kind of music. I was all alone liking Big Band music when I was a teenager (got some albums by mistake, and loved them).
And I cannot thank you enough for telling me about that poster, I need to get one!
And thanks too for becoming one of my followers, I really appreciate it more than you can know. :-)
It's funny that you should say you have been trying to figure out how to download your own videos. I have been thinking just now about doing the same. My videos (the recent ones anyway) are MOV files which Blogger doesn't support. I found a program to convert them and then it hit a snag. Now I'm stuck!
ReplyDeleteSo if this is your problem too and you find a solution, please tell me :)
Dear Jenny,
DeleteGreat minds think alike! Yes, mine are MOV files too and I can't figure out out to get them on Youtube, maybe I will be able to sort it out with a little help from my son. If I do, I will let you know!
