Sing It Out Again! (World Cup/ Toy Story 5)

Hello to all my friends in the blogging world! (And for anyone else who happens to drop by.)

There is a little thing going on right now called the World Cup! For the first time ever, it is being played in several cities in North America, not just in one spot.  For an old lady like me, it is a bit confusing. (Who is playing? Where are they playing? What day is it? LOL.)  Anyway, it is FOOTBALL in the entire world but in the USA, it is called SOCCER. It is believed that the word "soccer" comes from the middle part of "association" but reading more about it, no one really knows for sure but in the USA and Canada, it is soccer. (It is called soccer in Australia too! If I had ever been lucky enough to visit Australia, I would have known that.  Thanks to my blogging friend from there, I know it now. Thanks, Patricia!)

Now, have any of you been watching? It has been a big thing for Atlanta, since Atlanta is one of the host cities. Have I been there? No, even though it is about 30 miles away, I can watch anything on TV, and I try to avoid the crowds. (Tee hee, not that I would ever spend that much money on a sporting event!)  Having said that, I do hope you have seen how much Boston enjoyed the Scottish fans! Why, the president of the Boston Red Sox wrote a letter to the fans, positively gushing with appreciation. They had attended a Red Sox game, with their kilts, bagpipes and sing-alongs! The fans had pretty much taken over the bars with their "No Scotland, No Party" signs and also, putting traffic cones on the statues! Now, the Scottish fans are in Miami, and it looks as if the same is happening there. For me, it is the SINGING that I think I would most enjoy.  Wouldn't that be great fun?

I was well pleased to hear the singing after USA won their match against Australia. They sang "Country Roads" by John Denver! For years, they have sung "Sweet Caroline" at the Boston Red Sox games, and I have loved hearing that when we watch the baseball on TV.  I saw recently that Neil Diamond himself led the singing there! Isn't that wonderful?

One other song that I was very pleased to hear...the new song from Taylor Swift from "Toy Story 5."  Yes! Richard and I saw that film too and we both really enjoyed it. (If you go to see it, be sure to stay after the credits, okay?)  Oh, and "Disclosure Day" has gone right down in box office.  Gee, could I be an influencer? Ha, made you laugh!

In other news, our son is writing for "The Last Word On Sports" about the Atlanta Braves! Look, I have a link, you can read an article by him just here.  Even if you don't know the first thing about baseball, I truly think you will like his writing! You know I do.

Hope your June is going along nicely. Take care, my friends! I am either watching the World Cup or baseball. (Wimbledon will start soon!) If there is a ball involved, I am THERE!

  1. Your son does write well.

The whole world is having joyful parties all over because of the sports right now, and it's fun to watch, isn't it.

  2. I have been watching some of the world cup matches and I already knew all about Boston and the Red Sox through various films. Black Mass and Lost come to mind. (Which I've been watching instead of the world cup as that nearly all that's on our TV at the moment at night.) I'm also amazed at the Scotland fans, excellent though the supporters have been, that they can afford the prices in the USA as seemingly they have been ramped up for tourists from what they normally are for locals yet they are still drinking the bars dry over there. Either they are fairly wealthy, or more likely, will be debt paying it off back home for the next few years. I never knew Scotland was such a prosperous country.

    1. Yes, I saw on the news that the most of the bars in Boston were sold of all their beer except for BUD LIGHT! Ha, the Scots say even THEY wouldn't drink that! (Wish I could call up my Dad and laugh about that!) I cannot imagine how much money they are spending to fly to the USA and stay here and also, drink and eat here. God forbid any of them have to go to a hospital or doctor! I bet there are some worried old parents like me in Scotland, fretting over their grown kids! It has been a good thing for our country, we are in great need of seeing folks having fun and singing and laughing.

  3. I used to play soccer in school too. It's a fun game. I've only seen one professional game. So exciting. Taykor Swift's new song is perfect for the movie.

    1. Locally, soccer is a big thing in our county. We had the Gross brothers, two men from Germany who survived the Holocaust, who loved soccer and made it their mission to bring it here. They succeeded!

  4. The World Cup is playing near us and the traffic has been horrible - but that is the way it goes.
    Your photos are beautiful.
I didn't hear the music being played with it.

    1. Traffic in Atlanta! We have it always, we don't need any big event to add to it, do we? Oh well, you are right, that is the way it goes!

  5. With so many Scots being welcomed to Boston, and indeed to Miami, the Scots tourist trade will increase next year. These guys have been saving for years for this, and now being ripped off in some places. Just think how wealthy an independent Scotland could be. But the Scots have enjoyed Boston, and many will be back. The Boston welcome has improved the US image abroad. Football, and that is the correct term, is the only game that matters. With 30% C currently I would like to be by your lake cooling off!

  7. I am aware of the World Cup but as a non-sporty lady I am pretty clueless about it and had no idea USA won vs Australia. But I do know it is called Soccer in Australia too. One of my boys played for a while in primary school. Your son writes very well too, just like Mum :) I loved hearing the song from Toy Story 5 for the first time. We enjoyed the earlier Toy Stories with our grandkids and are thinking of sneaking off to see this one by ourselves. Great post Kay.

    1. Thanks very much, Patricia!! Go back and read my post, I have now amended it to show that it is soccer in Australia! I do hope you will see Toy Story 5! Now, be sure to stay AFTER the credits have rolled, okay? It is possible that Richard and I were the only retired couple there but hey, that's okay with me! Thanks very much for saying that C. writes well like his Mum! G<Day to you! xx

    1. Our football is called "American Football" in England! Not sure about anywhere else but I know that is true! Our son enjoyed playing soccer with his English Dad and he also played on a soccer team during the summer as a child. He likes it too!

  9. I have watched both USA games. The next one on Thursday night (against Türkiye) doesn't start until 9:00 Central time. As I usually go to bed a half hour after that it will depend how exciting of a game it is if I stay up to see the whole thing.

    1. That sounds like me trying to watch a Braves game when it is on the West Coast. Those games don't start until after 9:30PM! And if they go into extra innings, it really is bad when the Braves lose, like they did last night! Never mind, I made the right decision and went to bed. LOL!

  10. I’m not much of a football fan though do hope England does well, if you watch look out for the Three Lions in the crowd, they live a few doors away from me. Looking forward to seeing Toy Story 5

    1. Hey! If I see guys dressed up as the 3 Lions, I will say, "There are Billy's neighbors!". My husband will think I am crazy. LOL!! Oh, please go and see Toy Story 5! I mean the first two films of Toy Story cannot be surpassed but this one has a wonderful, sweet charm about it that I think you will like.

    1. It is one reason why I learned to crochet as a teenager, I spent so much time watching TV for sports that I felt like I needed to produce something with all that time! LOL!

    2. That's funny. My dad watched a lot of sports when I was a kid and I just never got into it. I crocheted my grandson a baby blanket and I don't even know how to crochet. I tried to follow a certain type of stitch when making it but I think I might have made my own and just went with it. LOL It's the only thing I ever crocheted.

    3. It's funny you mentioning your Dad, that is really why I love sports, because he loved them so much and I loved spending time with him. He was a really great guy! We would even talk on the phone and watch a baseball game at the same time! He was pleased that I would crochet too with the phone tucked under my ear at the same time!

    4. Hey! Thanks for coming back to see my reply! I lost my Dad in 2019, if you put Daddy in the search engine at side of my blog, you can read several posts about him. Everybody thinks their Dad is the greatest, mine truly was.

  12. My sister is the only one in my family who regularly watches football matches when a championship (European or World) is going on - I really couldn't care less, to be honest, but I love to imagine you in front of the TV, maybe some snacks and a cold drink at hand, and singing along with the songs :-)

June has been a record-breaking month in my part of the world; we're experiencing the highest temperatures ever measured here at this time of year. And with hardly anyone having A/C, it is not easy to get through the days and nights right now.

    1. I bet your sister was thrilled when Germany won recently in last few seconds of their match! I have seen the news of the heat in Europe. I feel for you, without air conditioning temps in the 90's make life uncomfortable! Very often when I am watching sports I am either crocheting or else I am on my feet stepping in place and lifting weights at the same time! If there is a song involved, there will be singing and dancing steps too! No drink or snacks for me!

  13. I didn’t know that it was called soccer in Australia too. I thought it was just in the U.S. Thanks for sharing that Kay as I enjoyed learning things like that. I haven’t watched any games but have been very interested in the results. I have been very impressed by the good sportsmanship, and loved all the interactions of the fans, especially the Tartan Army with their bagpipes, and the Norwegians’ rowing chants, how the Japanese were wonderful about cleaning up the stadium afterwards and the other nationalities following suit. It’s all been very positive. Thank you for the link to your son’s article. I will check that out. I have never seen a Toy Story movie and I will have to rectify that. Thank you for the video. My son saw the other movie you mentioned and had the same opinion. Have a wonderful weekend and thanks so much for visiting me.

  15. I am enjoying watching the football. We now call it football here in Australia although some still stick with soccer. Yes USA was too good for Australia. My excuse is that USA has over 400 million to choose from where as we only have 25 million. I hope USA go further.

  18. Wow, you are quite the sports fan. I really never have been. In the fall hubby likes me to join in at the Ohio State Football Games. I go, but wouldn't miss it if I never went again. Haven't watched any of the games in the World Cup, but have enjoyed watching some video's of the fans and reading articles about the Scots...they have really left their mark. We're getting ready to have a big golf tournament here in town...it's the Seniors Open. I think that's the proper name of it. Hubby is a golfer and he's volunteering as a marshal at the event. It was going to be Tiger Woods first senior open, but then he once was drinking and driving and therefore won't be coming which many are not happy about. The golf course is within walking distance to our house, so I suspect we'll have some added traffic for the event. And a few blocked off roads, or maybe just limited traffic on some roads.

    1. Hey Sandy! You never know what sports I will watch. For years, I never cared about golf but now, I love to watch it on TV! LOL! I don't spend every minute watching sports, if I did there would be no time for anything else. We have a little tournament in April in Georgia! Augusta is straight down 1-20 from us, about 100 miles away! Have a happy 4th of July!
