We are grandparents! Isn't that the most exciting news? You know that Richard and I are thrilled! The parents have requested no photos or details, but I can tell you that we have a granddaughter! Isn't that wonderful? She is gorgeous, I promise! And Christopher and Sarah are parents extraordinaire, you know they are!
We were there to see her just after she was born and I tried to think ahead of time...what will be the first song that I will sing to her? What is the first song that she will hear from me?
Can you believe it, I was so overcome with emotion that I couldn't sing a single word. I simply hummed the beautiful tune of "Come Back to Sorrento" when I first held her in my arms.
What a sweet little love!
There! I hope you are able to click on that link above! You will be rewarded with Connie Francis singing "Come Back to Sorrento" in Italian! Yes, this marvelous woman could speak Italian and Spanish fluently! Our little granddaughter will know so many singers and songwriters from me, you know she will!
Before we left to head back to our home, I was able to collect myself enough to quietly sing the first few lines of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" to her, as she clutched my finger! (I found a great cover, but I sang it MUCH softer than this.)
"Sweet little things", "In My Garden-Candle of Life" and that one little Lily blooming for me, do you remember these from my recent posts? Our granddaughter is called Lily! See, I have given you some hints!
Just read back over this and almost every sentence ends with an exclamation mark. Those are all well and truly meant with all my heart.
Here are photos of Lily's English grandfather and her American grandmother. Just to mix things up, it is a photo of me in England and one of Richard in the North Georgia mountains. (And although Lily will know how great a photographer Richard is, you all know I took that last one!)
Hope you are all doing well in your part of the world!
Remember the baby turtle we saw on the trail? BABY!

Hooray! Congrats. I waited a long time for a grandkid too! Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteThank you, Linda! Good things come to those who wait! x
DeleteWelcome to the world, Lily! "For each child that's born / A Morning Star rises / And sings to the Universe / Who we are" -- that's from a Sweet Honey in the Rock song called "We Are." I think you'll like it, if you don't already know it:

Thanks very much, Debra! I did not know that song, but I do now and I thank you!
DeleteCongratulations on being grandparents. I think I got my taste in music from my sister, who I'm told was always singing in the house when I was young. I also inherited her record collection later so Petula Clark, Sandie Shaw, Pat Boone, Dusty Springfield, Cilla Black, Frankie Vaughan etc. All stuff you would know well. Still sounds good today.
ReplyDeleteSo you never know what songs will sink in if you sing them.
Thanks! We are thrilled to be grandparents! Ah lovely, you have an older sister. Since I am an older sister also, I hope that I might have had a bit of influence on my younger siblings too! And look out for post that I will link to Audio Phix where our son has written a great piece about songs from 1976, if you can believe it!
DeleteOh! And remember how much I liked the Golden Girl mural on your post! It made me think of Lily!
DeleteOh Kay... I'm so very happy for you. I truly understand your son's want for privacy. My son says the exact same thing so I have to blank out the kids' photos and not give out any information about them. My granddaughter is of age now so she's now given me permission.
ReplyDeleteI love that you're singing to your sweet granddaughter. I can just imagine how she's hearing and loving it all.
Thanks very much! You know I will be singing all the time to that baby girl. She will probably grow up thinking, "Oh no, here comes that crazy singing Granny again". LOL!!
DeleteOh how wonderful!!!! Congratulations Kay!!!! I love her name. Welcome to the World Dear Lily!
ReplyDeleteThanks very much, Denise! We love her name too! xx
DeleteCongratulations to your family on the new addition! One of the most beautiful things God ever says to us is, “Here’s a baby!”
ReplyDeleteYou know I agree! Remember when you had a photo of your pretty granddaughter on your blog recently? I so wanted to tell you I had one now in a comment to you!!

ReplyDeleteBest post of the day? I love that!! I love babies, don't you? In fact, at family gatherings, I will go without food if it means I can hold a baby. Honest! Imagine what I am like with a granddaughter!
DeleteWelcome to the world Lily! Congrats Kay. Your whole life will change for the better.
ReplyDeleteThanks! We are thrilled with her.
DeleteCongratulations, Kay! I know you are totally smitten with your sweet little Lily. I hope at some point we get to see that sweet little face but, if not, I understand her parent's wish for privacy.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great Mother's Day present! xo Diana
Smitten, yes indeed, we certainly are!! Lily looks a lot like her Mommy but then, she looks like her Daddy too, so it will be interesting to see who she favors as she grows up!
DeleteMy first Mother's day as a Grandmother!! xx

ReplyDeleteThank you, Jennifer! I will pass that along to my dear son and darling daughter in law!!

DeleteHey Cathy, you comment came through twice but that's okay, I will say thank you again! xx
ReplyDeleteDear Kay, congratulations to you! I am so happy for you! Your photos are lovely!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Linda! The photo of me is in Eastbourne in East Sussex. That is where RIchard's parents used to live. Sadly, they have both passed away now but Lily will hear about her English great grandparents and her American Great Grandfather! xx
DeleteCongratulations. I know how much you love your son, Multiply those feelings by a million and you will not be close to the way you love your granddaughter. As much as I love being a mother It I had only known I would have just skipped that to be Grandma. I made sure that the first song I sang to them was The Unicorn.
ReplyDeleteYes! I do remember the post where you told us that!! Our son first heard that Unicorn song on the radio when he was a kid about 10 years old, he loved it! I think it was first time I heard it too! Truly I have always enjoyed my son and I know I will enjoy grandparenting too!

DeleteThis is such joyful news — congratulations to all of you! You can absolutely feel the excitement and pride shining through every word. A beautiful granddaughter and two wonderful new parents sounds like the perfect combination. I love how lovingly protective everyone is being too; it makes this feel even more special and heartfelt. Your granddaughter is clearly being welcomed into a family overflowing with love already.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Excitement and pride and a great love, glad that came through in my writing.
DeleteOh Kay, this is the most marvellous news. Congratulations to you all, and I know you will be wonderful grandparents. I am so thrilled for you. What a perfect song for her: I want to hold your hand. The thrill of being a granny never ends. My little granddaughter is now four, and I can never see enough of her, and hearing her little piping voice yell out 'Granny". Lily is a beautiful name :) xxxx
ReplyDeleteSo glad you saw this post! We are truly thrilled to be grandparents! We are both AHEM, getting on in years, so we are very grateful! I was going to be called "Granny" but I dreamed that LIly TOLD me that I am her Nanny Kay, so "Nanny" it is! Of course, she may call me anything!I knew I wanted to sing something from a British band, it had to be the Beatles, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah! Tee hee!
DeleteCongratulations!
