Camels and Signs

There are two of my blogging friends in different parts of the world and they have both had camels on their posts recently!  Camels? Yes, camels!  Debra from Edmonton, Canada showed us her amazing drawing of a camel. (She Who Seeks). Please go and look at it just here!

Patricia from Australia told us that she was in Dubai and purchased some bejeweled camel figures. She added them to her Nativity Scene for Christmas.  (Red Cardinal) You may see Patricia's camels  just here.

Okay, TWO camel posts, that is enough of a sign for me! Is it possible that even camels remind you of a song, Kay? You know it!

Ralph McTell is a very, very good guitarist/singer/songwriter. When his children were young, he made a FANTASTIC collection of songs. "Alphabet Zoo".  He wrote a song for each letter of the alphabet and had an animal for each letter. (He did 27 songs.  The letter "N" got two of them "Nellie, the Newt" and "Nigel, the Nightingale". You know your life is better for knowing that.)

Hope you love this genius song as much as I do!  If you notice, the background sounds like the kind of music that you could hear in the Middle East. Not that I have ever been there but hey, I have seen "The Ten Commandments" and since most of my knowledge is from films, it is enough for me to be impressed. Anyway, the thought of a very small camel bringing the Three Wise Men with their gifts, is such a lovely way to show children that even the smallest can do great things.

Signs! Do you believe in signs? This reminds me of two movies. The first one is "Thunderheart" from 1992. It was directed by one of my favorite directors, Michael Apted. (I have written about him before!) Graham Greene, the actor who died last year, has a great role in this film.  (Graham Greene is a well beloved Native Canadian but he portrays a native American in this movie.) He tells the main character, "You had a SIGN!".  Now, you will just have to see the movie to know what this is about! The second film is even more obvious; it is the movie "Signs"!  It is from 2002 and was written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. It is an interesting movie, scary but thoughtful also. Oh, and there are some good bits of humor in it too! "It felt wrong not to swing", is a line that my son and I quote to each other sometimes!

Now, I have never seen a camel but here is a photo of a cat, posing on a rock for Richard.  I hope this creature will be okay in the coming ice storm that is predicted for this area.  They are opening warming stations for all the homeless people also. It is scary to think of being outside in the temps they are telling us will happen. We will have several days that will not be above freezing, which is very cold for Georgia. Hope everyone is careful and takes the right precautions for dealing with the weather.

Wherever you are in this world, this is the sign that you should carry warmth to all!  My quote on my calendar today says, "If peace be in the heart, the wildest winter storm is full of solemn beauty."  (C.F. Richardson).

  1. Thanks for the shout-out, Kay, I appreciate it! And for introducing me to the delightful song "Camilla the Camel." May all stay warm and safe in your coming ice storm/blizzard. This is why winter is no one's favourite season!

  3. Dear Kay, I just looked in Google for Graham Greene. He was a Canadian Native. I wanted to make sure before I commented. I remember him well. He was a very well loved and respected man.

    1. Thanks! If you notice, I went back and changed that sentence to show that the actor was indeed from Canada. 🍁

  6. Better than Streets of London anyway. One of my hillwalking friends was a big Ralph Mc Tell fan and used to play his stuff in his car all the time... often for 5 hour trips to the Highlands and back. Certainly gave me the insight on trips away using my own car to always go for various artists mix tapes instead of full one person LPs if someone else was in my car. He never seemed to get the message though. Still makes me shudder. :o)

    1. 10 hours in a car with music that you don't like? Oh no, poor you! As much as I love music, I would want some times of silence on that long of a car trip. Having said that, we are BIG fans of Ralph McTell and love "Streets of London"!

  9. I've seen camels, zoo. We went to a drive through safari a few years back with the grands - the camels stuck their heads right in the window to get some treats...kind of fun, until they chased our car ....

    1. Richard reminds me that we must have seen camels at the London Zoo in 1985 but if so, I don't remember them. The giraffes at their enclosure, I do remember and I just looked it up. Their area, the buildings there are some of the oldest in the zoo!

  10. Camels have been crucial to the survival of humans for thousands of years, in all types of deserts from Mongolia to Africa. They are beautiful, majestic creatures.
In 1990 my then husband and I went to Tunisia for a holiday. We booked a guided camel ride, and I enjoyed that very much. It was so comfortable, and I felt totally safe.

  13. I saw Debra's camel drawing. She is amazing and such a fun person to follow. I have seen camels at the zoo but not up close and personal. Will listen to that song and I have seen Signs a couple of times over the years. Have a safe weekend. We are minus 18˚F right now and not supposed to get above zero today. ugh....xo Diana

    1. Winter is not my favorite time of year. For me, since we suffer through such heat in the summer, I think we deserve a mild winter in Georgia. That is what I think anyway!

    1. Oh yes, we love "Streets of London"! It is such a great song. I am sure I have had it on my blog before! I am so glad to see your comment here, so I can ask you if you have seen the film, "Voyage of the Dawn Treader" from 2010. It was directed by Michael Apted! He TRULY is one of my favorite directors, I love everything he ever did!

    2. Yes, I have of course seen it, and I have it on DVD - but I have to admit I don't think I ever paid much attention to who directed it. Looking up his filmography on Wikipedia now, I'm also not sure I ever saw any of his other films. - I have reread (and listened to) the original Narnia books many more times than I've watched the movies.

    3. "Coal Miner's Daughter" is my favorite film of his but his documentary, "7 Up" is a close second. He went back every seven years, and spoke with the same kids he interviewed when they were seven years old. This lasted until 63UP. All fascinating. Michael Apted died in 2021, a great loss to the film world. I love books but am pleased when a book is brought to life on film too.

    1. Oh my, you know that I am American, so I very much know Camel cigarettes! Interesting thing, in early ads for Camels, they used the song from Scotland, "The Campbells are Coming", but said "The CAMELS are Coming". See the things you learn from me, AD MAN? LOL!
