Sailing/Luna Moth

Hello, my friends. How are you all doing? Sailing along through the summer? Well, Wimbledon is over, and I can't help but feel sad.  I enjoy the tennis (what I had time to watch) but honestly, it was the brief glimpses they would give us of London that would make me sit up and pause the TV and admire whatever scene they chose to give us. Sometimes, it was Buckingham Palace, Elizabeth Tower, Tower Bridge, or the view of the Thames with all the new modern buildings. What a city!

Just before Wimbledon, the Brits had the Glastonbury Festival.  It is a musical festival that has taken place since 1970 on 900 acres in Somerset, which is in Southwest England. This year it was from June 25 through June 29.  Reading some of the reviews, it seemed that many criticized Sir Rod Stewart. Say what?  What is wrong with people? Don't you know a good entertainer when you see one? I really liked the video of him singing the song "Sailing".

"Sailing" was written by Gavin and Iain Sutherland, two brothers from Scotland. In the words of Gavin... " The song has nothing to do with romance or ships. It's an account of mankind's spiritual odyssey through life on his way to freedom and fulfillment with the Supreme Being.".  There, isn't songwriting fascinating?  You all know I think so.

And LIVE AID was on July 13, 1985! So, gee whiz, that was 40 years ago now.  The most memorable thing for me was Freddie Mercury with Queen, what a performance, don't you agree?

Oh, and those scenes from London? I forgot to mention St. Paul's Cathedral!  This is NOT from the TV screen, it is a photo that Richard took one year that we were there. The area around St. Paul's has changed so very much!

On a walk recently at Panola Mountain State Park, Richard spotted this moth beside the trail resting on a tree.  He did very well to see this, it was well camouflaged.  It is a Luna moth and it is very special to see one.  The Luna Moth only lives from 7-10 days and it does not eat. It has no mouth or digestive system, living off whatever was eaten in the pupal stage. The Luna Moth is nocturnal and since they are attracted by lights, you are more likely to see it in a parking lot or on a tennis court, for example. (Which is the only other time that we saw one. Christopher was about ten years old taking tennis lessons. He was astonished that hardly anyone else noticed this bright green moth, with a 4 inch wingspan!)

Male Luna moths have bushy antennae while the female have much thinner antennae. So, is the one we saw male or female?  Looking at photos, I can't tell.  Anybody want to guess? And you have to look very closely but it is missing the long bits hanging down...what do you call them?  Those bits must have been taken off by a predator. You all must be mightily impressed by my scientific wording, "those bits", but if you understand what I mean, well, that's what it's all about isn't it?

Trying to walk every day in this heat is tricky. We have to be out very early and even then, it is hot. Very!  Wish us luck, we just keep sailing along.

    1. Oh yes indeed, I love to recognize places in London. The ones they showed from Wimbledon were easily known but sometimes, we can recognize streets in London when we see them on TV shows! (Mostly older ones, they don't do as much filming there as they used to!)

  4. The bright green Luna moth is beautiful, and so well camouflaged it really is amazing (or maybe not so much, knowing you two) that Richard spotted it. I didn't know it has no mouth or digestive system... it was made that way, sure, but still... it sounds a rather sad, short existence.
On Sunday, the 40th anniversary of Live Aid, our local radio station was broadcasting the entire show from back then; it went on all day long, interspersed with interviews and so on. We were out and about for part of the day but in the car and at home in the kitchen, we were listening and remembering.

    1. We were in Eastbourne on the day of Live Aid but since it was such a warm day, we just had to go to the beach! We got back and watched Queen, so I was really glad to see that performance. Funny, I don't have that many memories other than that one, but it was amazing.

  5. I watched Rod Stewart and |I thought he did well, Neil Young on the other hand the less said. He did not want his set broadcast and I don't think the crowd were impressed either as they left in droves. I remember dancing to Rod at some of the discos I went to back in the 1970's Maggy May is one that always comes to mind. Sorry you can keep Wimbledon, it takes up both BBC channels all day, they don't seem to think some people are not interested in it. BTW I have seen U2, the Stones and Bon Jovi Twice at Wembley after Live aid.
have a look at my blog for some photos around Oxford this week
https://spudsdailyphoto.blogspot.com/2025/07/a-walk-around-st-giles.html just as a reminder that London is not the only city worth seeing.

    1. I watched some other acts on YouTube from Glastonbury and I wasn't impressed by hardly any of them! I saw Rod Stewart in Atlanta about 1977 I guess it was. He was great. Now, you don't have to convince me of the beauty of the rest of England! How I would love to see Oxford! My husband and his family are from London and the London area, so that is why we visit there. Of course, one has to be aware of the limitations of travel funds, don't you know! You know what I really love about your church photos? When you show us a lovely window or altar, I always say, I wish I could see it closer. And then, the next photo, you zoom in and show it much closer! THANK you!

  6. I didn't watch any tennis. I rarely watch TV at. The picture of the moth is amazing. They do like to hang around porch lights. We try to keep ours off for that reason. Hope you keep enjoying summer ! It is very hard to walk in the summer heat.

    1. I know, moths are always attracted to lights! When I was reading about the Luna Moth, the "experts" said, they didn't know why it was attracted to lights. I wanted to say, "Well, aren't all moths attracted to lights?". See, I was like that with teachers at school, always questioning! LOL!

  7. I am not a tennis buff so I only listened to reports of who did what. I know you hold memories of London close. The picture of the luna moth is fantastic. I don't know how he spotted it in all the leaves. People are too quick to find glee in someone's age. Shame, shame.

    1. Rod Stewart is 80 years old now and I kept reading that he was "too old" to still be on the stage. I thought he was looking and sounding pretty good, myself!

    1. Thanks! You know it is the butterflies that are so hard to photograph here, we have the fastest ones in Georgia, I think! That moth, Richard thinks it might have been at the end of its life, it didn't move at all, and now from my reading, I know that it wasn't eating so, just on that leaf, hoping for a nice photographer to appreciate and capture its beauty. Richard did so.

  9. I wasn't that keen on the Walkie Talkie skyscraper, just in looks alone ( squat and bulky, not elegant at all from a distance) until I found out the top level has a free viewing platform overlooking London ( also a restaurant I think on that level) which totally redeemed it for me. Better than queuing for the London eye with all the tourist crowds which put me off going up it when I was down there.

    1. Our son loves the views from The Sky Garden (I think that's what they call the top of the Walkie Talkie.) And he has even eaten at the restaurant there! Only been on the London Eye just once, in 2006! Not at all busy then. Our son was with us and he was just 16. He must have looked English, people asked him for help when we were in shops! He really loved that when we were in a music shop in London.

    3. You got great pictures of a Luna Moth! Did you know that info about it, that it doesn't eat it only exists to reproduce and only lives about a week. I didn't, I just learned it when I looked it up!

    1. Hello! Thanks for your comment from Australia! Now, I wonder, what memories do you have of London? I would love to know! I see that you are in your 80's so I realize that London has changed a great deal since then. (I first saw it in 1981 and the way it was then to now is astonishing.) Thanks again for your comment. G'day!

  12. 'Those bits' and your comment on the use of those words made me think of 1 Corinthians 13.1 (I think!) "Except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood how shall it be known what is spoken?"
