First Man (Neil Armstrong) Movie Trailer

Ryan Gosling will portray Neil Armstrong ,the first man to step foot on the moon, in the film "First Man".  Based on the book "First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong" by James Hansen, the film will be released in October.  I very much enjoy books and films about real people so you all know I had to tell you about this one! "Apollo 13" is one of my favorite movies. Even though that was more of a "rescue" kind of film, it showed how dangerous it really was trying to get those astronauts back to Earth, and then, the joy at doing so!  The book "Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13" by Jim Lovell is one I highly recommend! (Remember when Neil Armstrong came by to comfort Jim Lovell's family? I know they take liberties during films but I can just bet that he did this!)

When he first stepped on the moon, Neil Armstrong was supposed to say " That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind"... but he left out the "a" or it wasn't picked up or something and somehow, just leaving that out, it gave it more, I am not sure, more feeling somehow. Not just one man, but all of mankind being with him. I will never forget the thrill of hearing these words from him on that hot night on July 20, 1969...

"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
Imagine what it must have been like for the astronauts to see the Earth from the moon.  If you look at the NASA photos now, you will see their marvelous photos from the Space Station.  I highly recommend that you do so! Would you like a link to the best photos from space from 2017?  Sure you would!  Here it is...best astronaut photos from 2017.

    1. It does, doesn't it? I know there will be quite the buzz about it because of the Ryan Gosling name. Maybe it will make up for him being in LA LA Land, that is NOT my kind of movie! LOL!

  3. Do you remember the book "The Astronaut Wives Club" I reviewed on my blog some years ago? In that book, and in several others I have read (for instance "The Real Space Cowboys") about the 1960s Space Race, Neil Armstrong comes across as someone you'd like to know. Not an angel, not a perfect man, but definitely "the right stuff".
I must look up the link to the astronaut photos now. Dr. Alexander Gerst, the German astronaut currently aboard the ISS and to take over command from Drew Feustel, has taken wonderful photos during his first mission in 2014 and is sharing more pictures this time around.
By the way, I like the Apollo 13 movie, too - also the music!

    1. We tend to put people on pedestals but we shouldn't, we are all human. (Although, there are some that I am wondering about these days..LOL!) Yes! I well remember your review of "The Astronaut Wives Club" and I knew you would like to know of this movie! You know I am on Instagram (hardly know what I am doing with it, Christopher signed me up for it) One of the Instagram accounts that he picked out for me was NASA! And he was right, I loved it!
And that Apollo 13 movie! I LOVE it! Perfectly cast and well acted, I don't like all of Ron Howard's films but this one was just right for me!

  4. It was an exciting time. We watched all the rocket launches and we watched the men walking on the moon. Science fiction had come to life.

  5. I'm one who remembers where she was on that night. I was staying with some friends in Lubbock, Texas, spending the night. And we were all watching their TV. I was 11 years old. I'm excited about the movie. Will be watching for it.

    1. Kay, we are almost the same age! In 1969, I would have turned 12 in April. I watched it with my brothers and sisters and afterwards, went out and looked up at the moon. So strange to think of them being on the surface of it!

  6. I was doing research on my family tree, way back (1600s) I share an ancestor with John Glenn who is my favorite of the astronauts. Funny enough in that same line, one generation later I share an ancestor with Dick Cheney, and the generation after that (meaning closer to the present day) I share an ancestor with Barack Obama.

    1. That is so interesting! You should write to Barack Obama and tell him so. Be great if he wrote you back, let me know!
Also, I was hoping that you would leave a comment since really, ADAM was the first man!

  7. I was just a kid but I remember it well! What an exciting time. Looking back, it seems amazing that we had that kind of tech in the 60s.

I can't imagine how solemn and awesome and frightening it would be to travel that far from home, and to see the Earth from the moon.

    1. Hey Sue! Lovely to see your comment here! Of course, I was a child then too, although I was 12 so not THAT young, it seemed like I was younger. I haven't changed much, I still think I am younger than I am. LOL!

  8. I remember that moment in 1969 very well. I was at a bank in Thailand cashing a check when I watched Neil take his first step as shown on a TV behind the bank teller. Awesome!

    1. What a moment to remember and you were in a bank just cashing a check! It seems that Richard told me that they were told in England that the moon walk would be at a different time and he missed it!

  14. My husband and I both get very excited about anything to do with space exploration - I don't remember the moon landing but he does, not least because the mission took off on his birthday. I did a bible study course last year where we were told that apace travel is irrelevant and nobody remembers the names of the first astronauts who walked on the moon - I was horrified, I thought everyone knew them! I thought I kind of got my own back on Easter Sunday this year when, outside our cathedral at 5am, we looked up and saw the International Space Station moving overhead between the two spires. Thanks for the heads up about the film. x

    1. Thank you so much for this lovely comment! I can only imagine how thrilled you must have been to have seen the International Space Station and to have seen it on Easter Sunday, between the spires of the Cathedral, what a special thing to witness. You have made my day!

  15. I remember that day in July, 1969 so very well. I was at work, but slipped out and watched the landing via the televisions set up in the windows of Coles in the Queen Street, Brisbane's main street. Brisbane, of course, is the capital of Queensland.

That day, here in Australia when I stood, in awe, among the crowd, was Tuesday, 21st July, 1969.

And your last sentence here, where you told me that you stood in awe among the crowd...that is why I blog -for words like that. Thank you.
