I'll Sail This Ship Alone (The Beautiful South)

Hello, my friends!  Feeling a bit under the weather so not much time for anything these days.  Sorry I have not had much time for blogging and reading all your wonderful posts!  You know how much I love Eastbourne in England if you have read my posts for any time and I was pleased to see a music video from 1989 that features Eastbourne!  I recognized it immediately, from the very first frame where they show the man sitting on a bench, beside a long row of benches...I know just where that is, it is next to a Bowls patch/field/area near the Redoubt!  Made me ridiculously happy to see this and to know where it was!  (Funny thing, I cannot think for the life of me what you CALL the gorgeous green area where they play Bowls...I am sure that one of the Brits who reads this can tell me!)  Richard just told me...it is a BOWLING GREEN! It SHOULD be called that, it is incredibly green!  Of course, I recognized the seafront and the pier very well from the video!  So wonderful to see these views!  Hope you like the video too!

(It says that you can't see it, but just click on the part where it says you have to watch it on YouTube and you should be able to view it.)

If you noticed the "gaming area" in the video, where the lady is surrounded by games and flashing lights in a very large room, that WAS on the pier but burned down a few years ago.  They were able to save the pier (thank God!) but that portion is gone now...it is now an open area on the pier and there are picnic tables here and there for visitors.

Please forgive me but I HAVE to make sure and remind you all how much I love the book "Sailing Alone Around The World" by Joshua Slocum!  I wonder if the writers of the song "I'll Sail This Ship Alone" know of it?  They will if they read my blog!
Take care everyone, hope you are all doing well!

Hey! Just saw on the news that SOMEONE pushed the wrong button and sent word to Hawaii that there was a missile directed towards them. WHAT? It was a mistake and apparently, was corrected within 30 minutes but come on, how easy is it for someone to push a button and cause something like this? Makes you wonder...

  4. It was a horrible mistake for those poor people in Hawaii. I wonder if some other mistake might cause a war someday.

    1. I can't believe that just one person can do that. Scares me to think of it, and I do feel sorry for anyone there or who had loved ones there.

  5. Isn't it a happy moment when you recognize a place you've been in a video, movie, TV show, etc.?

Praying you feel much better soon.

  6. Hope you feel better soon Kay. I always liked that band. I notice they never said here who it was that pressed the button by mistake- maybe better not to know...

    1. I had never heard of the band until I saw a movie this weekend and one of the actors had a cameo in the video and that is how I found it!

  7. It actually took them 38 minutes to correct that horrendous error! I hope they kick that guy who pressed the wrong button to the kerb...and make him swim to Antarctica. I'm sure the US don't want him on the mainland!!! What a fool!!! Such a dangerous thing to do....to say the least.

I hope you're feel so much better, if not completely better as I type my response. Take care... :)

I read that he was just shuffled along to another job. Gee whiz, wonder what he has to do to get fired?

  8. O.K. and I couldn't believe it when we heard that about the false alarm on Hawaii. As you say, makes you wonder...!

Isn't it lovely when we happen to watch something on TV (or find it on youtube) that features a place we love and know well?

You can tell how tickled I was to recognize Eastbourne! You have to know, I am either in Eastbourne or in the local area around this little town in America, hardly anywhere else! :-

  10. Really enjoyed the video and the number - not one I know (I've not listed to a lot of Beautiful South - perhaps I should). Really sorry to hear you're under the weather and hope all is tickety-boo by the time you read this. That event in Hawaii must have been terrifying..!

  11. Hope you are soon feeling better. You always have some interesting bits and pieces to share...and yes, that button, could have been a disaster ...way to easy to push buttons of any kind.

    1. Thanks, MA! Richard says "bits and bobs", don't you love that expression?
Scares me to think what just one person can do to cause such fear.

  12. My niece and her husband are on Oahu and it was not a fun half hour for her, nor for her parents when this false alarm happened. The good news is it was a mistake and not maliciously meant. But still, it should never have happened.

    1. And to think of all those who know them and were worried about what it must have been like for them! (Like you.)
Of course, I am glad it was a mistake but still, it just makes you shake your head.

    2. I actually only found out after it was announced to be false. But my brother and sil who live in Atlanta were very very worried.

    3. Of course they would have been! I am so sorry that they had this anxiety, it is so bad when loved ones are so far from you! I know this since we have family in England.

  13. I'm a history buff, too. Sometimes I wish I had majored in history in college.

Love that old building where the wedding was held!

    1. You can go and see that old building, it is the mill in Porterdale! Just don't go today, the Almon Road exit is closed!

  15. I could hardly believe the story re the button - I always thought that was something of a fallacy!
Love the English piers, so nostalgic and attractive. I understand how you felt seeing it on video - we get excited when any place we have visited appears on the TV - we compete as to who is first to say 'Been there' :)

    1. We don't get out much so I am excited when I see something that I do know very well! The pier in Eastbourne is truly a special one, I am glad they were able to save it when they had the terrible fire.

  16. I sometimes (like others who have commented) wonder whether the next war will actually be caused by mistake. At the moment anything seems possible.

  17. I enjoyed this post very much, Kay! The Eastbourne pier reminds me very much of the Brighton pier. The song was beautiful; the singer had such a pure, beautiful voice (and gorgeous blue eyes). Of course I know all about Joshua Slocum. He's a home grown hero to me as hewas born on North Mountain in Nova Scotia and moved to Brier Island as a child. Gulp! I haven't read his book. I must! Take care!

    1. WHAT!??!! You haven't read the book? You must! Promise me you will! I have had people tell me that it is a classic amongst sailors but I am a landlocked Georgia gal and I love it!
Eastbourne is very close to Brighton, I think only about 10 miles away or so!

    2. Slocum's book arrived from Amazon today! It's next in line after I finish reading the book I'm on.

    3. Dear Louise, I truly hope that you love the book as much as I do! Happy sailing around the world! :-)
