Glen Campbell "Skippin Over The Ocean Like A Stone"

So sad to hear that Glen Campbell died today. I have written some posts about him before.  Even though he is no longer with us, we still have his music and that is forever!  His last album was released earlier this year, "Adios".  I am glad that he liked the Harry Nilsson song "Everybody's Talkin' At Me" too.

Everybody's talkin' at me
I don't hear a word their sayin'
Only the echos of my mind
People stop and stare
I can't see their faces
Only the shadows of their eyes
I'm goin' where the sun keeps shinin'
Through the pourin' rain
Goin' where the weather suits my clothes
Bankin' off of the northeast winds
Sailin' on summer breeze
And skippin' over the ocean like a stone
I'm goin' where the sun keeps shinin'
Through the pourin' rain
Goin' where the weather suits my clothes
Bankin' off of the northeast winds
Sailin' on summer breeze
And skippin' over the ocean like a stone
Everybody's talkin' at me
Can't hear a word their sayin'
Only the echos of my mind
I won't let you leave my love behind
No I won't let you leave
I won't let you leave my love behind

"Everybody's Talkin" by Harry Nilsson was a big hit in 1969.  It was in the Dustin Hoffman/Jon Voight movie, "Midnight Cowboy".  I always loved the song even though I was too young to see the film.

"Skipping over the ocean like a stone"... I couldn't understand  that last word but came to know that must be the lyric when I was in England and was taught how to throw stones across the water.
The photos above are from the beach in England in 1985. Can you recognize us?  That would be Richard and myself with his parents, who have always looked like models!

Let me know if you remember the posts that I did about Glen Campbell.  Take the time to find the videos of him playing "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes. What an incredibly gifted man. There is an obituary from a newspaper from England, "The Guardian" that is well worth reading.  You may find it just here.

    1. Let's see, I would have been 28 and Richard would have been 30 in those photos!
I am glad you remember my posts about Glen Campbell. I think he was a great, great talent.

  2. Southern Nights was my favorite. Did you know that he played guitar on The Unicorn? The Irish Rovers called him their lucky charm.

    1. A great many musicians held him in the highest esteem, my son is included in that number! :-)

  3. Some lovely pictures, and you are all very easy to recognise, you have not changed all that much! But it is the first time we get to see you wearing a skirt - what a stylish outfit for a visit to the beach!
I have never managed the art of letting a stone skip on the water.

    1. I think that we weren't planning on going to that beach but I found it hard to pass by a beach without begging to walk on those stones! I well remember that pale blue skirt and it had a matching blue top to go with it, but I have on that jacket because it was a bit cool. I am sure it was Joan's and she loaned it to me, she had the BEST taste in clothes! :-)
AND guess what, I learned to skip a stone on this day that I am showing you here, and I enjoyed it very much.

  4. 'By the time I get to Phoenix' - my favourite! I loved all the songs, and it is a sad day to say goodbye to Glen Campbell. And yes, I do remember your posts :)

    1. I noticed that the passing of Glen Campbell was mentioned but once again, I am surprised that no one seems that interested that we have lost such a special talent. Seems to me he might have been appreciated in other countries from around the world!

  5. Hi Kay - now I know why we have shingle on the beach! His songs were beautiful ... lovely music and wonderful lyrics ... skipping across that ocean like a stone (something I could never do!) ... sad about his going, but he was working till the end, or almost. Fun photos - cheers Hilary

    1. Hey Hilary!
Yes, it is just for skipping stones! HA! This area that I have pictured here is totally different now, I think it is in the Pevensey Bay area...might be wrong! I believe I heard that Graham Norton has a home there now, or very near this spot. Wonder if he ever takes the time to skip stones? :-)

  6. I might have known you would post something about Glen Campbell, Kay; like me, you love your music. He was an immensely talented man, playing on so many tracks and even standing in for Brian Wilson for a bit. Not being a particular C&W fan, I was not a follower, but his talent and skill are unquestionable and his passing is a sad. Love those shots on the beach (Eastbourne?). Skimming stones is great fun - it's all in a) the choice of stone and b) the wrist... :-)

    1. You can tell by my face how much I was concentrating on learning this new skill!
These photos are from the area near Pevensey Bay, I think which is near Eastbourne. It is very different now than then, I think this beach is private now. Lucky thing, we could walk on it then!
Glen Campbell...an amazing talent, it is a loss.

  7. He was truly a beloved man. And I was so touched by the news story (I think 60 Minutes) about his kids playing with him on tour and how they were supporting him in his Alzheimer's disease.

    1. I know, his life is an amazing one and I think one that should have been celebrated more than just hearing "Rhinestone Cowboy" on the radio. Just a thought.

  9. They played Rhinestone Cowboy in honor of Glenn on the radio here this morning. He will be well remembered.

    1. Perhaps the same man who did the film "Dunkirk" could do a film about him, and give the man the proper respect that he deserves. That would be nice.

  10. It's always sad when such a great musician dies, but their music never will. I just read that he recorded the album Adios years ago while he was still lucid. To me, that is incredible. He recorded one last farewell before it was too late.

    1. I don't have the last one that he did, but the one before that one...Ghost On The Canvas, and it is really good.

  11. He fought a good battle almost to the end.....he was not only a good singer, but a brilliant guitarist, too.

A wonderful interpreter of the great Jimmy Webb's songs.
