"Risen" and "The Young Messiah"

"Risen" is the new movie that will be released tomorrow, Feb. 19th.  This really looks like it is well made and one that I think I would like to see.  There are some familiar faces in this movie for me since I watch so many British TV shows and movies! Let me know if any of you see it but don't spoil it for me and tell me too much since I might not have time to see it right away.  Don't worry though, I know how it ends!
Just remembering the TV movie of "Jesus of Nazareth" from the 70's, I think it was.  Anybody remember it?  I thought that was an incredible work of great film making.  Jesus was played by Robert Powell and John The Baptist was Michael York, both excellent British actors. (Mary Magdalene was played by Anne Bancroft and she was also wonderful.)

Oh, and I just saw that there will be another movie that will come out this year called "The Young Messiah" and it will be about Jesus as a child.  (Seems like they could have brought the movie out FIRST about Jesus as a child and THEN released the one of the Resurrection! But hey, that is Hollywood for you.)  I don't know that much about the film but I do know that Sean Bean will be one of the stars.  And if you don't know Sean Bean...well, you should!  He is another one of those British actors that I like!

Hope you are all doing well these days.  As for me, my energy level is rather low during February but hey, March will be here soon!  Take care, my friends.

    1. Oh yes, I am remembering that "The Young Messiah" will be released at Easter. I always have high hopes for films but they don't always come up to my great expecatations!

  2. Hi Kay

I remember Jesus of Nazareth fondly and have seen it a couple of times since its original showing. For me, the music/score is as powerful as the acting: and that is saying something.

At the risk of bathos, we bought some spuds like that only yesterday although for rather more than 99p.

    Take care

    1. I remember reading that both Robert Powell and Michael York were very moved by the film, by the men they protrayed. (And in Robert Powell's case, not just a man, the way I see it anyway.)
And 99p!! That was a good price, wasn't it? :-)

  3. I saw a commercial for that film on tv recently and it did look like a good one. My energy level starts declining in November and so I do understand. All winter I'm in a state of hibernation! Hang in there, Spring will soon be here !

    1. Come to think of it, I felt perfectly fine at Thanksgiving, and after that...not so good. I am finding the winter to be a hard slog this year. Since we look on the bright side, we know that Spring is around the corner!!

  4. I think we've gone from an age of sequels to an age of prequels now. We're getting a movie about the ressurection before a movie about young Jesus. It worked for Star Wars, why can't it work for the Messiah?

    1. I hope these movies will be good. Honestly, I find it difficult to go to movies these days, I usually wait for them to come out on DVD, it happens so quickly now!

  5. They both look very interesting that I'd enjoy watching. I know you have trouble commenting on my blog, Kay. I'm not sure what causes it or how to fix it. Yet. But in the meantime, you can click 'reply' on someone else's comment and add yours (like you did yesterday). I'm sure no one will be offended. Or click your back button on your browser (top left corner) and the comment box usually appears. Also, when you do click on 'reply' to someone else's comment, a link 'Add a comment' appears below the comment box. Click on it and a new, separate comment box will appear for you! These are simple solutions until I figure out what I can do. And if I can do anything about it.

    1. Sorry to bother you about my commenting problem, dear Martha, but I really hate when I want to leave a comment and I can't do it for some reason!!
      Thanks for your advice above!

  6. From what i've heard, Risen is a fictional story that actually treats the real events surrounding it will great respect. As for The Young Messiah, i will have to reserve judgment until i know what they base it on, as there is so little actual information about His childhood.

    1. When I read about the movie, "Risen", I immediately thought of the Roman soldier who said,
Surely, this was the Son of God!". I don't know what the story will be like, but I hope the character is led to faith from what he witnesses.
And while it is true when don't know of the childhood of Jesus, I think it might be an interesting movie to watch and think about.

  7. I watched the Robert Powell one when it first came out and it made a big impression for a religious film. Also liked "Whistle down the wind", a quirky British film from the 1960s about children who find a stranger in a barn and think he's Jesus. "A High Wind in Jamaica" is another from the 1960s you may remember that had Anthony Quinn as a pirate in one of his best roles. Each had a special script and great performances that made them unique and memorable. Hope "Risen" and "The Young Messiah" fall into the same bracket. Some films are just so different and beautifully directed they stay with you forever. Over 30 years since I watched them. Night of the Hunter,Harvey,Arsenic and old lace,Marnie,The Birds,North by Northwest,Lawrence of Arabia,It happened one night,Cabaret, Meet me in St Louis,Ten Little Indians, etc are all films you don't see that often now on TV but I'd happily watch again. Some films just have that extra ingredient sprinkled over them.

    1. OH! I love Whistle Down The Wind!! I have written about it before on my blog, I am sure!
Never saw "A High Wind In Jamaica" but it sounds interesting! And all the other movies you mention here? I have seen all of them and like them too!
"Some films just have that extra ingredient sprinkled over them"...yes, it is like magic to me, to see a film that I love and will think of again and again.

I saw "Brooklyn" yesterday - beautifully filmed and a wonderful story.
