It's December...Happy Birthday, Joan!

It happens every year, just after Thanksgiving but December catches me off guard every time!
Today is my mother-in-law's birthday and I can't be with her today but I was there in October for my father-in-law's birthday, so I will share a few photos from that day.

(Being in England now seems like a happy dream, much like the little boy pulling the scarf from his pocket at the end of "The Snowman".)

A celebratory meal of smoked salmon sandwiches and champagne makes me smile every time!
And may I just say, I got some UNWAXED LEMONS FROM SPAIN to squeeze over the salmon and I am sorry, but that deserves all capitals, it does, they were wonderful!  Fond memories of lemons, you are thinking, but hey, they were delicious and unlike anything I have had before. (Not forgetting the wonderful bread, champagne and the smoked salmon from Scotland!)

Please notice the birthday cake with FOUR CANDLES.   There is a reason for that number and it has to do with the TWO RONNIES.  I have had this video on here before but I must share it again with you.

You will laugh at me I know but as I walked past Joan and with the sun shining through the window, I was struck by her pretty hair and her thin gold necklace on the back of her neck. Pure elegance, I tell you!  Happy Birthday, dear Joan, enjoy your day and hopefully enjoy some birthday wishes sent your way today!

Okay then, it is December but guess what...we still have some lovely color on our trees.  It seems that some of the red colors are the last ones hanging on.  I don't have any great photos of this to show you, but I promise you, they are lovely.  Happy December!

    1. Thank you on behalf of Joan! And later, after I had typed this post, I thought to myself, "Did I really put a photo of the back of Joan's head on my post?". Oh well, you can see her face in the first photo, and you can see her sweet husband with his arm around her!

  3. Happy Birthday to Joan...she certainly does have lovely hair. That is a delicious looking birthday cake...I say this in the nicest and most flattering way...the white of the cake matches Joan's beautiful hair! (My mind works in mysterious ways...don't try to figure it out...I gave up trying years ago)! :)

Happy December to you and yours, too, Kay. :)

I love the Ronnies' clip...very funny. They were great.

  6. What a delightful post and a lovely tribute. I use unwaxed lemons when I make my limoncello but they are not always easy to find.

    1. Thank you, Graham! I must admit I don't ever remember seeing unwaxed lemons before, but then, I often don't see things at the grocery store, I am always busy looking for custard creams and Yorkshire tea!

  7. As usual, I'm a day late (or simply ahead of you, time-zone-wise...). So: a belated Happy Birthday to elegant, immaculately beautiful Joan!
The pictures are great, and I would have gladly left all the salmon to you (not keen on it) and rather had an extra piece of the cake and another glass of champagne instead ;-)
Still colourful here, too, but most leaves are gone from the trees, as we've had a few very windy nights.

    1. Elegant and immaculately beautiful...as usual it takes someone who writes English as a second language to get the wording just right!!
      Cheers!

    1. I know, Sylvia, and her hair always looks good! Unlike me, you might notice my hair in the photo where it looks like a used dishrag! :-)
The cakes in England, like all the baked goods to me, are amazing!

  13. All the leaves on the trees for me (minus the evergreens) are gone now. A very happy birthday to Joan. Her hair is indeed awesome. I can see why you couldn't resist taking a picture.

  14. Wow, Joan does have gorgeous white hair! Love those curls! We have bare tree branches and no snow, a bit bleak around here! Love your photo showing that last bit of color!

    1. Yes! I love that Joan will see your comment about her gorgeous curls! Thank you!!
We still have some color on our trees, I have never seen it this late in the year but it won't be long and we will have those same bare branches. Hopefully, no snow for us!! :-)

  15. Hi Kay! And belated Happy Birthday to Joan! Family photos are always the best! I enjoyed your piece about the cedar waxwings on Arabia Mountain. I haven't seen these birds in years. When I lived in Atholville, New Brunswick in first grade, there were many wonderful cedar waxwings. They were one of the first birds I learned to identify. The Two Ronnies clip was hilarious, although I had trouble understanding both of them. I need to sharpen my ears! Have a lovely day!

    1. You will have to watch more British TV shows and then, you will not have a problem with the Two Ronnies! LOL.
Glad you like the Cedar Waxwings too, they are just beautiful flitting about and twittering!
Thanks for your well wishes for Joan, much appreciated! xx
