Elvis FOREVER!

Elvis Presley

Hey! Why am I just now hearing that there is an Elvis Presley FOREVER stamp?  It came out in August.  Oh wait, I was sick for most of August, so I guess that is why! (For those outside the USA, if you buy a forever stamp you can use the stamp even if the postage rate increases.  Only thing for me, I can't use it on any mail that I send to England because there is no monetary amount posted on it.)
Now, if you notice, there is a tiny gold crown in the space beside where it says "USA".  This is a nod to the fact that Elvis Presley is called the king of rock and roll.  Personally, I wish that they had left that out.  Elvis said there was only ONE King.  (King of Kings and Lord of Lords, in case you are wondering.)  I know that there are many who like to belittle Elvis and the people who like him and I can only say that I always liked him and I always will!

We had a really great Elvis stamp from 1993 and if you live outside the USA,  you might not know that the US Postal service actually gave the American public the choice between two: a young Elvis or an image of Elvis in his later years. As far as I know, this is the only time the Postal Service has ever done this. Well, of course, the younger Elvis was chosen.  (Who comes up with these ideas? What did they think would happen?)
I liked them both but the later one made me sad since I knew he died in his early 40's.  Why couldn't they have done both?  And why doesn't the US Postal Service contact me about these things? You know I would tell them!

My Dad really likes Johnny Cash and so, I got some Johnny Cash Forever stamps for him.
You know, I think it is a nice thing to give stamps to people that you care about...something useful but also something that is meaningful to that person!

How about you?  Would you ever think of giving someone a set of stamps?  Or am I just being my usual weird self?  Elvis FOREVER baby!

    1. Oh, I wish I could have seen him too! And I didn't say but I also loved Johnny Cash too! I loved that he also came to have a deep faith in God.
Blessings to you, sweet Susie! xx

  2. I think I've seen every Elvis movie atleast 3 times...probably more! I do enjoy his wonderful voice and when he sang hymns it was magic. I give stamps for different occasions. It's really appreciated when thank you notes are going to be needed like wedding showers and such....never had anyone throw them back at me!

    1. I was crazy about those Elvis movies! Folks made fun of them but as a kid, I loved them! Glad you also give US postal stamps, I love practical gifts!

  3. When I was 12, one of my uncles gave me a stamp collector's album with a few particularly pretty stamps already in it, to get me started on the hobby. Although I never became a proper collector, I did add to the album over several years, and was truly fascinated by the many different countries and their stamps so different from those I was familiar with. I remember how it took me a while to figure out that "Magyar Pozta" meant "Hungary Postal Service" :-)
The most delicate and pretty ones were from the Fidji Islands, and I had some from Djibouti which looked the most exotic to me.

As for Elvis and Johnny Cash, I like them both, and find it sad that they both lead such troubled lives, especially Elvis who sort of lost touch with reality in his later years, it seems.

    1. When you live in small-town Georgia, you have to get your art fix somehow, and mine started by looking at stamps! :-)
As a travel agent, we got mail from all over the world and I always asked for the stamps! Of course, since I wrote to Richard for nine years, I have a fondness for British stamps!
I also liked Johnny Cash too, although I didn't say so in my post.
And I think that JC conquered his demons but I think that Elvis always suffered with the problems of fame and ill health. Also, Elvis like Michael Jackson was too trusting of doctors.

  4. Years ago my DDH collected stamps and for a short while I thought one of my sons was going to do the same, so yes, I have given stamps for a gift. Elvis remains a favorite of mine !

  5. I think I'd like those stamps for the purposes of collecting but I rarely send any mail. If I knew someone who did I'd buy them a set of stamps. If it was more a collectors thing I'd also buy them then, just to have them or just so someone else could have them.

    1. I suppose that hardly anyone sends out mail anymore. It's a shame too since it is so nice to get a card or a letter rather than junk and bills!

  6. I remember seeing the Elvis stamp(s) from the 90s. The new one is nice too but WHOA! That Johnny Cash stamp rocks! All black background as a tribute to the Man in Black himself -- how cool is that?

    1. I know! I think whoever did that design of the JC stamp did a great job!

  7. Elvis was a huge talent and enormously influential. How many pop stars can you think of who were turned onto rock 'n' roll after hearing Elvis? Mind you, I reckon Chuck Berry was at least an equal trail-blazer. Of course, we often see Elvis down the chip shop... Not being a great fan of C&W, I didn't fully appreciate Johnny Cash until I saw the amazing movie, 'Walk the Line'. And what about Buddy Holly? There just aren't enough stamps to commemorate all the rock 'n' roll heroes...

    1. Music! I have written a few posts about my love of music but my words cannot convey how much I love it, how important is has always been in my life!
Wish they would let me on those stamp committees, I would have lots of ideas!

  9. A friend of my mother was one of many who were instrumental in getting the first stamp instituted. She was a sweet little woman. She had one room of her house that was a shrine honoring Elvis.

  10. I don't think you're weird at all, very thoughtful in fact. My son loves anything to do with Batman and so I bought him a set of Batman Stamps to put in as a stocking stuffer last Christmas. That's so neat about the little crown in the corner of the Elvis stamp. Thanks for visiting my mystery person post. You were spot on as regards to her heritage. Thanks for stopping by :)

    1. Yes! Pocahontas! I knew it was an Indian woman but not sure of the painting!
Batman! I had a Batman lunch box when I was 8 years old. I am sure my mother threw it away at the the end of the year. Wish she had kept it! :-)
Thanks for stopping by too, Denise!

  12. I'm sorry to hear that you were sick during much of August, Kay! You may have posted on that, but I've been so in and out with blogging due to traveling that I probably missed that. I do hope you are feeling better.

I enjoyed this post a lot! I loved Elvis and still do. I felt sorry for all the sadness in his life and his tragic death at such a young age. I voted for that young Elvis stamp too. The young Elvis has to be the sexiest man ever. Fame and fortune seem wonderful, but they often come with a tragic cost.
    Hugs, my friend!

    1. Louise, I might have posted about being sick in August but to tell you the truth, I can't remember myself! September wasn't that much better but hey, you gotta just stick things out, ya know?
I am so glad for your comment! I think that it must be difficult to be famous, to not be able to go anywhere without having people hound you to death. Elvis used to rent a whole theatre to see a movie so he wouldn't be bothered.
Hugs to you too, I hope you are having a nice autumn out there in Colorado!

  13. I will look for those stamps. I always buy "interesting" stamps, but only for myself. I do write letters, but not that often. I noticed yesterday that I was still using my winter stamps which I bought before Christmas cards last year.

    1. When I used to write to Richard all those years ago, I began to notice how the British stamps were so pretty and that began my appreciation of stamps. I was a common sight at my post office asking to see what new stamps that they had on offer! I like to use the Christmas stamps year round myself!

    1. Ha! Me too but I heard that he is really good!
Don't know if you know this, but for many years I have called friends and family on their birthdays and sung "Happy Birthday" like Elvis Presley! I think I might be related to him, he looks a lot like the men in my family. Also, he was Southern and poor, two requirements for my kinfolk!

  15. When my family asks what I want for Christmas, I jokingly say postit notes. Maybe I'll say Elvis stamps this year - good idea!
