Rose Breasted Grosbeak!

My Dad called me today and was most excited about seeing a bird on his deck.
"It's got a black head, and it's white underneath and the red on the front is like a bib, and that red is the PRETTIEST red that you have ever seen!  Do you know what it is?"

My Dad knows I know my birds! It is a rose breasted grosbeak.  They don't live in Georgia but at this time of year, you can see one passing through if you are lucky enough.     "Stunning",  "cannot be mistaken for any other bird" and "like an exclamation mark at your bird feeder"...those are some of the things that I just read about this bird!

Oh! And I also read that their song is like an American robin's but more melodious, as if a robin had taken singing lessons!  That's funny. (Sorry, Robs, you know I love you too!)

I really love my Dad's enthusiasm, just like a child's!
Stay young, no matter what your age!

  1. Thanks for visiting my blog and your good wishes. We don't have the Rose breasted Grosbeak here, but we do have the ordinary grosbeak, who is quite colorful too -- orange, black and white. Rather like an oriole but chunkier. We have two oriole families this year, so we are doing well.

  4. I love the expression "an exclamation mark at your bird feeder"! I use that, too - my heart makes little exclamation marks at the sight of RJ, or when he sends me an email or a text message :-)

I know you remember this photo of my Dad from a few years ago, but it shows his enthusiasm so well, I had to use it again!

  6. That is a really gorgeous bird. I saw one at the gym a few days ago. Not one of those birds specifically. It was small and brown and was messing about on the window. It was a welcome distraction from the dullnessof exercise.

    1. Funny thing, I find all birds beautiful. Even what most people would call "drab and brown". If you look closely at birds, the way that their feathers lay against their tiny bodies is an amazing sight and even the brown feathers are such a gorgeous color. Just look at them! They are a very welcome sight at any time!

    1. I think I read that they really love to be in the very tops of trees so that makes them hard to see. However, if they live in your area, and I think that they do, then if you feed the birds, you should see one!

  14. Smashing little bird. Similar to a bullfinch or crossbill in the UK with that beak which looks as if its evolved to open a certain item on a tree. Always thought the secret to a happy life is the ability to still be able to be amazed or affected by the beauty of the world around you and take joy in it Glad you said American Robin as I thought I'd found a nightingale in the garden first time I heard a European Robin singing as a child with my newly purchased bird book. I was very disappointed on that occasion to see it was just a garden robin.

    1. Just a garden robin! Bob, I LOVE your robin! It has the most beautiful song! I have a fond memory of walking in Polegate in England, down Shepham Lane and hearing a robin singing its little heart out! What a beautiful song! I first saw a drawing of your robin in my book "The Secret Garden". Did you know that the reason our bird is called a robin too? It is simply because the early settlers here from England must have been excited to see a bird with similar coloring even though the birds are very different! I love both robins...the American robin AND the European robin!)
