When The Cold Makes You Blue

When the cold winter makes you blue (and that can mean blue in color and blue in mood) then... make blueberry muffins!  That is what I did!  I made them this morning and took them into work for my co-workers.  Happy to tell you that they were a hit!  They were only from a blueberry muffin mix, but instead of using the blueberries that came with the mix, I used my Dad's blueberries that I had in my freezer! (We picked them together this past June.)  I think I remember reading somewhere that if you add blueberries straight from the freezer that they work out perfectly in blueberry muffins.  I also added a squeeze of lemon juice and a bit of milk.   Making these muffins was just a small thing but we have all been stressed out a bit at work so even this small thing was much appreciated.  It was very cold today, our high was only about 23 degrees.  It was pleasing to offer freshly make blueberry muffins hot from the oven, on such a cold day!
I didn't have time to take a photo of the muffins, but you know what muffins look like, right?  How about some "blue" photos, instead?

  1. Lovely blues, Kay! You and your coworkers seem to be going through quite a spell of stress lately. I'm sorry to hear that, because it can sure grind you down. How cool that you made the blueberry muffins for your colleagues. I remember how much I appreciated it when someone brought goodies into work to share. Tomorrow my husband retires. It's hard to believe after all these decades of work! I hope you have a great Friday and a warmer weekend! We have a possible snowstorm moving in for the weekend! Take care!

    1. Don't turn blue from the cold, Louise! Wish I could share my blueberry muffins with you!
Happy for your husband's retirement. Hope you enjoy every minute. xx

  2. Your blue photos make me feel warm all over, Kay. I used to make blueberry muffins with frozen blueberries when we lived on the mainland. I still remember going to pick them. Come to think of it, I do have frozen packaged blueberries in my freezer. When I made them for my sister-in-law here in Hawaii, she didn't know what they were. She thought they were too big to be blueberries in the muffins.

    1. Oh, my dear, so funny that you mention big blueberries! The little can of blueberries that came with the packet had the smallest berries you have ever seen! They made me laugh! That is when I pulled out those berries from the freezer that were from my Dad's blueberry bushes, they are BIG blueberries and just delicious!! :-)

  3. What a kind gesture, Kay! For me to spend so much time in the kitchen BEFORE work just so that I could take something in for my colleagues would need a very extraordinary occasion :-)
But then of course RJ, our friend and I are never stressed out - our work is very different in pace and requirements from what the majority of people have to put up with on a daily base, and I feel very fortunate to be part of our small company of 3.

The blue pictures are beautiful! I hope you'll have warmer weather soon. It's cold here today, too, but sunny; I am working from home today, so I can go for lunch at my parents' and enjoy the short walk there and back.

    1. It isn't something that I often do but something told me recently to buy that packet of blueberry muffin mix to make and take to work. (I couldn't use it for Richard, since he has to eat gluten free, as you know.) I had no idea what kind of stress we would be under, but when my instincts tell me to do something, I try to listen!
Lucky you, with your job now...it sounds perfect for you! :-)
I really don't mind the cold too much, but if I don't have sunshine...I miss it!
      xx

  4. Cold at 23 degrees? Then I realised you must be using ℉ so it was a mite chilly. You've captured so beautiful blues.

    1. A MITE chilly? In Georgia, when the highest temp is at 23 degrees Fahrenheit, that is cold for us! Of course, we are not buried in snow like Boston, but we are not in Boston! (Sorry you folks in Boston, you have nice summers, I am sure.)
Let's see, I took both of the flower photos, Richard took the rest!

You should be impressed by the muffins, I rarely make anything with wheat flour since my husband has celiac disease!

  7. Freshly baked muffins are a great idea to battle the cold. I didn't realise blueberries could last that long even if you froze them. I think using fresh ones always results in the best muffins. I can't imagine the ones in the packet were 100% blueberry.

    1. They were real blueberries in the box. They were in a separate little can (you say tin, I think) and you were meant to pour off the juice and add them to the mix. They were so tiny though and not very appetizing looking. Glad I remember the frozen ones in my freezer!

    1. Oh! HOW did you know? I forgot to say, that when they came out of the oven, I smathered some butter over the top of each one, but just a very small bit, just a TOUCH! They were golden brown and the butter made them glisten! I was so pleased to share them!

  11. Old Man Winter is terrorizing everyone this year! I usually have to raz my brother, who lives in Atlanta, when he gets that occasional cold snap. I guess just because he might have forgotten he grew up in Chicago and should be OK with cold and snow! That was really thoughtful of you to take in muffins to work. I know how much my coworkers devour any treats that get brought in! Stay warm and I'm sure it will get back to normal down there soon. Up here in Ohio? It was -14de this morning and frankly I'm doubting it will ever get warm again! It was warmer in Fairbanks, Alaska than it was here! Crazy!

    1. Oh, I know the rest of the country must think we are the biggest babies in the South about cold weather, but doggone it, we have to live through the hottest summers so I think we should have mild winters! LOL!
FOURTEEN BELOW! Make you some blueberry muffins, honey, you need them more than I do!!!

The church right here in Rockdale County, it was taken at the Monastery. I did a post about it and it is my most visited post.
You are correct about the Sussex seaside town, it is Eastbourne. That photo is from the top of Beachy Head. Lovely spot, have you ever been there?

    2. Yes, I passed through that way many years ago on a long distance hike across the South Downs. You may enjoy writer Josie Dew's photos (there's a link on my blog) She took her young family on a journey recently through landscapes you might be familiar with. Pram Push. An amazing women.
