Summertime In Georgia!/ In The Summertime by Mungo Jerry

There are two lakes at Arabia Mountain and this one needs to be called Mirror Lake if you ask me!
Since it is the summer, it is a good idea to walk early in the morning. It is in Georgia anyway.  A few weeks back I was able to go on a walk with Ranger Robby at Arabia Mountain.  Thanks, Robby, I look forward to another walk with you and I hope that Richard will be able to come on the next one!
Remember that I told you that our son loves his music? He came for a quick visit and the first thing that he did was to pick up Richard's guitar and start playing it!  It was a warm weekend so it was a good idea to cool off...
That's Christopher, can you see him?  He has dived into the pool, you can see the splash!

Richard and I had a picnic at Stone Mountain, at the Grist Mill.  The table is up very high and it is wonderful to have all the trees and the water so close to us, lovely on a hot day...
When I came home from church on Sunday, look at what was curled up asleep under our maple tree in our yard.  If you ever see a fawn with its long legs curled up underneath it, you will never forget it.
What a beauty.  Richard was able to get a few photos of it before it gracefully ran off with its long white tail behind it.

"In The Summertime" was a big hit from 1970.  And I remember it very well! It was by a British group called Mungo Jerry.  The group has had different members over the years but it has always been fronted by Ray Dorset, who wrote the music and lyrics to this song. (I have a great fondness for songwriters, you might have noticed.)  I found a video of the group performing this song at a concert from just last August!  It makes me happy to see the joy of the band and the audience.
Hope everyone is enjoying wonderful summertime, wherever you are! (And for my friends in the Southern hemisphere, hope you are having a nice winter!)

  1. I've always wondered what "Mungo" refers to. Is it just a nonsense word or is it some kind of Britishcism?

Hey Debra! Look at that church from Scotland, it is the St James the Less Episcopal Church in Penicuik. The Pastor of that church had a blog "Raspberry Rabbit" and was one of the first blogs I ever read! Over on the side of the church website, there is a link to St. Mungo's West Linton....so that was when I found out about St. Mungo!
Now, I have read that the name "Mungo" itself is from two Welsh words which mean "dear one"...the words became a bit jumbled up into MUNGO.
Now , I have no idea if that is correct, but that is what I have read!
Also, the Pastor, Robert Warren, looks as if he is no longer the pastor of the church in Penicuik, so I wonder what happened to his blog? If anyone finds him under another name, let me know, his blog was both funny and inspiring.

    2. St. Mungo!!!! Who would have ever thought. Thanks so much for being so smart! I'll never think of Mungo Jerry quite the same way again, LOL!

  2. Mirror Lake would indeed be the perfect name for it!
Love the "Yellow Daisy Festival" t-shirt you wear on the photo, Kay :-)
I remember "In the Summertime" as one of those songs that were played lots during my early childhood (I was born in 1968), but up until your post I had always assumed that Mungo Jerry was the name of the singer-songwriter.
The fawn is so pretty! If it had been in my yard, I would have probably never gotten my camera in time.

    1. Yes, Mirror Lake, I will tell Ranger Robby they need to make a sign for it!
Just because I love the Yellow Daisy so very much, I just had to get that shirt...it is an easy way to talk about my love of wildflowers on our local monadnocks! (Most people here have been to that festival but they have never seen the Yellow Daisies there!)
Not only was that song popular in the 70's but it still sounds good today! That is the test of a good song, I think.
And that fawn! It was fairly tame, it let us watch it for some time before it bounded away.

  3. Loved all that Kay. We have deer on the island but see them very rarely. How lucky were you to have a fawn in your back yard.

St. Mungo was a 6thc. Apostle and also the patron saint and founder of Glasgow. At least that is what my tour guide husband informs me. x

    1. The fawn was really in my front yard, just under a tree...we have lots of deer in this area, but I have never seen a fawn.
St. Mungo was indeed a saint. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Mungo
There, I have a link ..his name was really St. Kentigern but MUNGO was his pet name..."dear one", He must have been most beloved..
      Pat = Spesh 1 St. Kentigeren=Mungo
Pet names have been around a long time! xx

Thanks to you for asking the question about St. Mungo in the first comment!!

  6. I admit that I didn't read your t-shirt but I did admire the yellow flowers. The mirror lake is just heavenly. I, too, thought that Mungo Jerry was the name of the singer/songwriter (I live and I learn). The song is one of my 'cant be sad when it's playing' songs. That's quite a swimming pool! Lastly St Mungo is, indeed, the patron Saint of Glasgow.

    1. You would love the walks at Arabia Mountain with views like Mirror Lake suddenly coming up before you! You would also love my brother's swimming pool and his landscaping around it, I tell him it is like going to Florida, the pool reminds me of an exclusive resort!
St. Mungo! I have looked at church websites from England and Scotland for years, and that is how I knew of St. Mungo. I should have mentioned the good name of the Saint in connection to this post, I thank Pat for doing so and you too, Graham! :-)

  7. That takes me back. You don't look old enough to remember that song first time around Kay :o) I was 14 when it came out and it was the big feel good song of the summer Scottish coastal resorts and the background music to my first holiday romance. Unrequited sadly! Ray looks amazing for his age and can still put on a good show judging by this. Nice garden and fawn.

    1. Ha! I don't look old enough, you are funny AND sweet!! We are almost the same age, I was 13 that summer and I remember it very well. It was the summer that I learned to swim at Lake Spivey! I can well remember floating on my back and hearing that song on someone's radio!

  8. Lots of great stuff going on there! Glad your son was able to give a home concert, and wow, that pool and the surroundings look like a resort picture. I can see why you all enjoy it.

    1. That pool is amazing...the water is salt water, so no worries about chlorine and the paving around the pool is made of something so that when you step out of the water, it does not burn your feet! I can't enjoy it much, my light skin does not like the sun!

    1. Ha! Funny you should say that! As we were watching this fawn, a large butterfly flew by it and the fawn started to chase it! Looked just like Bambi!
That lake is at Arabia Mountain and is open to all! (Of course, I still wish that I could have a cabin there too!!)
