What Have You Learned Lately?

Hey!  There was an interesting segment on a local radio station that I heard on my way to work this morning.  The DJ wanted their listeners to call in and share something that they had learned recently.  The DJ told us this...on the gas gauge inside your car, there is a little diamond/triangle on the Fuel gauge...it is just at the bottom and is just beside the picture of a gas pump. and this symbol indicates which side of the car has the gas tank! So, if the symbol is on the left side, you fill up the gas on the left and the opposite would be true if it is on the right side. . When I asked some of my co-workers today, hardly any of them had noticed it either.  Some of them laughed and said, hey, can't you just look at the car?  HA!  That's true, but it just goes to show that there are things in place to help us along our way if only we knew how to recognize them!

So....my question for you would be this.: Have you learned something as an adult that you could share on this blog?  It would be great if it could be something really useful, something that folks could read and take away from this post and they will be very thankful for your great wisdom and knowledge!

For myself, the most startling thing that I have learned recently is this:   I am learning to COOK by watching  "Chopped" from the Food Network!  Now, I know you might think that might be strange but it is true.  It has really helped me to watch those professional chefs prepare the food that they are given, and to do so in a very short amount of time.   For me, when I watch someone cook with something like shrimp, raisins, chickpeas and cauliflower and STILL make a decent meal out of it, then surely I can take good ingredients and create a fantastic meal!  This is an on-going learning experience and you would think that I would be a great cook by now, but that is not the case, I promise you!

I have to say that I learn something new almost every day. Now, do I REMEMBER it? Ah, that is the question!   That is the best thing about the internet for me, if there is something that I am curious about then, I only have to type in a few words into a search engine and I am on my journey to the discovery of something new.

So....I Am (ahem) GETTING ON IN YEARS and I just learned that ____________________.  Fill in the blank, please!
And keep it clean, folks!

Sugar Cookies Made and Decorated by ME! (From two years ago, but still...)
From my newly found confidence, I made Richard some really good gluten free bread yesterday.  When he came home from work, he was greeted by the aroma of freshly baked bread.  AND it tasted good too!  Well, so he tells me anyway!

  1. I just learned (from a radio story) that the "Type A personality" is virtually a myth created by two cardiologists who were conducting a so-called study that was funded and directed by the tobacco industry, which wanted to steer the blame for heart disease away from cigarettes and onto "stress".

    Go figure!

    1. Wow, that is really something to learn but it does not surprise me. Smoking is hazardous to your health but it took them years to finally make them put warnings on the packets!

  4. I too learn something new every day it seems. Life never ceases to surprise and amaze me. It's wonderful how we can find answers to most anything on the internet. We've been visited by a groundhog lately that had dug a hole under our fence to come in our yard. The remedy they say is to fill the hole with kitty litter and ammonia and that'll keep him away...We'll see...

    1. I know! And even though my 87 year old Dad will not use a computer, he often will ask me to look things up on the internet for him! You see, even at this age, he is still learning, I love that!
Good luck with your groundhog! I have never seen one but I know that they are around!

  5. I'm reading Barbara Tuchman's incredible book The Guns of August (about WWI) and I learned that Belgium only became a nation in 1830 and it was set up to be neutral.

    1. She won the Pulitzer Prize for that book, and yet, this is the first I have heard of it. That sounds like my kind of book! Thanks for telling me about it.

  6. Kay - When I first came to America I learned the little rhyme "righty tighty, left loosey". Believe it or not I never heard it growing up in Ireland. Now every time when I need to tighten a screw or a nut or a bolt I sing this little rhyme in my head. It's an invaluable life lesson. Thanks America.

    1. Richard said he had never heard that little rhyme either until he came to America either, so maybe we have found something that the Americans came up with and something we didn't steal from the English/Scottish/Irish!!
And you are welcome, dear Mairead!! Hope you are having a great summer with your kids!

  8. I am learning that the words "try it; you just might like it" that I used to preach to my kids when I was introducing them to new foods is something that applies to me, too. For instance, I never liked peanut butter until I tried the natural type. Now I love it! It's the processed, sugar-laden type that I didn't like all these years! Who knew?

    1. Peanut butter was one of the few foods that I have never liked but now as an adult, I have developed a taste for it. And come to think of it, it is the natural type that I like, so you have just made me realize why that is so! Thank you!

  9. My lesson is that, even at a church, you cannot leave things out, you must lock it up if you want to come back and find it there next time you need it. Sad to say, but even people who know that the supplies are for VBS or for Sunday school will just come and help themselves, and you come to get it in time for class and it's gone.

    1. Oh dear, that is disappointing, I know. There is nothing like having something planned for kids, and then, you go to the cabinet and all the supplies have vanished and you are left with coming up with something on the spot. We live and learn!

  10. Kay, I did watch a you tube clip on how to make the perfect oval. I can't explain it here. But it was so precise and accurate. Love it. Blessings and good luck with cooking. xoxo,Susie

    1. Well, I am happy to know that you can make a perfect oval with precision and accuracy! And thanks for your well wishes with my cooking! My mother and my grandmother were not good cooks but I am trying to break the chain!

  11. That is a good one--I did not know that about the gas tank.

The tidbit that comes to mind is regarding taking showers/baths during thunderstorms. Though it is very unlikely to happen, people have been injured while taking a shower during a storm and an unfortunate lightning bolt strikes. Pipes are effective conduits for electricity--safest to just wait until the storm passes.

    1. Oh, I am glad that I wasn't the only one not to realize that about the little symbol beside the gas tank!
And you might have missed my post from last year when I mentioned that I was cooking during a thunderstorm and some lightening hit the ground outside and I think must have traveled up my arm, as I had metal tongs in my hand at the time! DO not do this during a storm! My hand tingled even the next day!
In the South, we have always been told not to be in the bathtub during a thunderstorm but no one had ever told me not to cook!

  12. Like yourself, I learn something new all the time - and often, from your blog!
I can't put my finger on anything particular right now that would be of interest to others, but all spring, I learned LOTS about Germany's Federal Law for Data Protection, about cryptography, IT security and more, at my course. (Still another four weeks to wait until I'll know the results for my final exams.)

    1. Thank you for saying that you learn something from my blog! From MY little blog? You have made my day!
I was thinking of you when I wrote this, knowing all the hard work of studying that you have been doing lately. Very often, adults will continue courses while they are working at the same time and it is not easy! I know your results will be very good!!

  13. This past week we were visiting Mt. Vernon in Virginia (a bucket list place to visit if there ever was one!) and I LOVED seeing George Washington's home and learning about him all over again. Now my entire life I thought he was a short guy because, well, he looks short. Then, while we were touring the mansion the tour guide just happened to mention that George was 6 feet, 2 inches tall. WHAT? I couldn't even believe it. In front of the entire group, I said, NO WAY. And then she told me that I wouldn't believe how many people say the exact same thing. Isn't that funny? So random but the coolest thing I've learned lately. :-) So glad you asked!

    1. That tickles me that you said NO WAY off the top of your head in front of everyone!
George Washington is one of my heroes, so I did know that about him. Wish we had more leaders like him today!
I've never seen Mt. Vernon, you are so lucky!
