Shirley Temple

Shirley Temple just died.  Did you know that Graham Greene, the famous English author, believed that she must have been a midget (small person) instead of a child because of her incredible acting and dancing talent?  I was just thinking of this song yesterday and watched it on YouTube, it is the one where she sings to her dolls and the dolls come to life, do you know the one?  I was working on a crossword puzzle and the clue was "German for BAH" and of course the answer is "Ach".  And there I go, off to enjoy this... it is from the movie, "Poor Little Rich Girl".  It is amazing to me how perfectly she sings this with all the accents.

And her dancing!   Don't even get me started!  And her obvious love and enjoyment for the people around her!  If you don't believe me, watch her dancing up the staircase with Bojangles Robinson, from the movie, "The Little Colonel".   At one point she just steps to the side and looks up at him with such admiration, it is a joy to see.

Shirley Temple Black served in the United Nations and as an ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia.  She has now passed away but her movies will live forever.  May she rest in peace.

  1. Shirley Temple is still a delight to watch. She did show a lot of love for life in her movies for sure. I didm' t know she was an ambassador. The brilliant colors in your flower pictures are a delight to see. Looking out my window all is white and shades of gray...

    1. I loved all the movies that Shirley Temple made! Not only was she an amazing talent but I think she was just a really nice person.
I get to enjoy those flowers every year. Sometimes, there are not as many flowers on each scape, but the year, I took the photo above, it kind of outdid itself in blooms. It is an amaryllis and it is awesome! That is why I chose it to go with this post, in honor of Shirley Temple.

  2. When she was a toddler, my older daughter used to be called the Korean Shirley Temple because of the curls and ringlets on her head.

    1. Absolutely, but not in a cocky overbearing kind of way...I wish more kids knew about her and would emulate her behavior. Adults too for that matter.

  4. I always loved Shirley Temple. When we were growing up ,our father told us she was a grown women, after we saw one of her shows. I felt like crying, I wanted her to stay little. We used to see all those old Hollywood movies, on "the early show". It would come on at 4o'clock mon.-fri. So all of us kids would watch it. We learned a lot about the old stars, our father would tell us who they were. xoxo,Susie

    1. Hey Suzan!
Happy to know you as well! My brother used to live in Marietta and my son lives in Cobb County now! Shirley Temple was born one year after my Dad and I also grew up watching her movies on TV. I think I know them all.
I am glad you got out of town before this terrible ice storm, it looks like it is worst for us on the east side this time. Hope you have fun in Mexico. Adios! :-)

    1. I love all her movies too. It's a shame that they are not shown more often on TV. Perhaps now, they will do so after her passing. Too bad they couldn't do it while we still had her with us but that's life, I suppose.
Hope you are okay in this ice storm, it's a tough one.

  8. I remember watching her movies;what a delightful child she was. I had not heard of her dying, such sad news. When I watched the videos here, I looked at it from the eyes of a retired teacher. She must have been an extremely bright child with all the talents she exhibited in the movies.

    1. Absolutely, I think she was brilliant. Think of all the lines she had to memorize, the songs, and the dance steps! Honestly though, as talented a she was, it was her sunny outlook that came shining through and inspired me as a kid, it still does.

  9. Her movies were so sweet and she always looked so happy, now our child stars all end up in rehab.

    1. Perhaps we should have "Shirley Temple Rehabs", where these young people could go and get a more positive outlook on life!

  10. In an interview i saw many years ago, she talked about learning her lines for her movies. She said her mother would read the line to her, and she would repeat it, and usually that was enough. She said she figured it was easy for her then because children's heads are empty so they absorb stuff quickly! It was funny the way she said it.

She lived her whole life as a class act.

    1. I read the same thing. And also, it was very hard for her to cry since she was so happy.
And not only was she brilliant but also humble. Not a word people know these days.
      A class act, I agree.

  11. There was just a mini-feature about her on the news on telly. I must admit I had no idea she was still alive - to me, she was like from a remote past, like all those movie stars from the 1930s to the 1960s. I watched "The Little Princess" when I was a child, and cried buckets. Later, I forgot about her and never knew that she did so many other things, such as working for the UN.
Usually, I am not fond of "child starts", because more often than not, the way they look and act is so unlike real children you can't help but think they were more or less forced into this by their over-ambitious parents. But Shirley Temple appears to have been different, gifted with real talent, and lots of it!

    1. Don't know if you know this about me, but I know a great deal about movies and movie stars from many different decades. Shirley Temple is one of those that I really admire.
HOORAY!!!!! Our power JUST came back on! THANKS be to God!
Sorry, Meike, but that made me so happy, I cannot tell you, our power was out for three hours in this ice storm. I am so grateful.

  12. I always loved Shirley Temple especially in her movie "Heidi". I would love to get a Shirley Temple doll, they are so pretty. I'm very sad at her passing but glad she had a long and wonderful life. I feel like I did when Roy Rogers passed away......sad.

I wish I had a Shirley Temple doll too. xx
Oh, and I also loved Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. In fact, my sister and I named our brother ROGER DALE!! I am telling you we really loved them!!!

  13. She was an amazing all round talent for that time compared to other children her age. Two great clips. Dakota Fanning is probably the modern equivalent for her acting skills as a child... and she's from Conyers!!!.

    1. Oh yes, Dakota Fanning is from Conyers!! One of my sisters worked with her grandmother and another sister went to school with her Dad! (She moved from here at an early age, but she and my son had the same doctor!)
And hey, guess what, Holly Hunter is from here too. She graduated from the same high school I went to, but she was one year behind me. (You might guess that she always did all the plays in high school!)

I am sure that you must know all her movies like I do. Maybe not, I notice that not as many people love old movies like me!!

  16. Oh, I missed this news! What a loss. I adored Shirley Temple. When Sophie was small, everyone, everyone, everyone would tell her she looked like Shirley Temple. Finally, when she was 3, she asked me, "Mommy, who is Shirley Temple?". So we pulled up some different movies and videos for her to see. We were all walking around singing, "The Good Ship Lollipop" for weeks. :-)

  17. And who hasn't heard of her? I remember watching her movies when I was a kid. Quite the talent. I didn't know that she served in the United Nations and as an ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia. That is something.

  18. No matter how long it's been since Shirley Temple was that pretty, dimpled little girl who stole the hearts of a nation and elsewhere...that little girl will always entertain us and bring smiles to our faces. Her movies never grow old. There's never been a child star since as talented as Shirley Temple...she was unique.

  19. She was just the most incredible child. Has there been anyone who could be her equal? And she was just so very adorably cute. By the way, the first video can no longer be viewed because of copyright infringement apparently. I was just playing a youtube of Shirley Temple singing two Japanese children's songs to my mother and she was totally amazed at her pronunciation of Japanese words.
