Morecambe/ Beatles With Morecambe & Wise-Feb. 12th, 1963

Please, if you can, read this post.  It is by Julie from her blog, Home Jules and the post is about Morecambe in England that she visited in August.  The pebbles on the beach make me long to hear the stones crunch under my feet again on an English beach!  Morecambe is very well known for the dangerous mudflats that are there and there is an interesting link about it on Julie's post...

Also, I had no idea that they have a statue of Eric Morecambe doing his little skippy dance! (Eric Morecambe from Morecambe & Wise, if you remember the video that I had on here before showing them in their famous Breakfast skit, with their movements to "The Stripper", so funny!  Eric Bartholomew was his birth name, he took his name from his place of birth.)   I wondered why the statue of Eric Morecambe had binoculars around his neck...it is because he was a great bird watcher! They even have a bird "hide" nearby which they have named after him.  You may read about it at this RSPB link.  (RSPB- The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.)   I had never seen a hide until I saw one in England...they are wonderful, you truly can "hide" in them, and the birds cannot see you, but you can see the birds.  (You might have seen them in the USA but perhaps they are scarce in Georgia!)

Now, after looking at quite a few videos of Morecambe & Wise, JOY OF JOYS, I found something that I truly have wished to see for many years...to hear the BEATLES without tons of SCREAMING girls!  I have it here for you and I would love for you to listen to it while you look at Julie's post.  The harmonies are just so perfect and their voices are so beautiful to listen to...the songs are "This Boy", "All My Loving" and "I Want To Hold Your Hand".  They even sing a song with Morecambe & Wise at the end!  And they are so young and joyful and so obviously THRILLED to be on this show with Morecambe & Wise!

I notice that many people don't see the beauty of Morecambe but the natural beauty of it really is appealing to me and I think that I would like it very much.  Thanks, Julie for letting me visit it with you!  I hope you will like the post on her blog as much as I do and I hope you enjoy this Beatles clip...  Thanks to all who left such wonderful comments on my last post!  I think my son's concert left me in such a state that I have been unable to concentrate very well!

  1. Oh, I enjoyed that Beatles clip! It's hard to believe today that their "long hair" caused such a ruckus but it certainly did at the time. I remember it well. Old geezers thought the Beatles were the End of the World, LOL!

    1. I also remember it well! My aunt who was only 8 years older, did not like them one bit! The hair was so different. I remember the reporters asked George what did he call that haircut and he said, "Arthur". HA!! SO funny and charming, beside being so talented.
Glad you enjoyed the clip too!

    1. Yes, they seemed to be using Ringo a good bit as a joke in this segment, including making him stay on the stage at the end. He always seemed to be very good natured about it though, I LOVE RINGO STARR!! :-)

    1. HA! Yes, I will be the one to love Morecambe, it needs someone to call attention to the natural beauty of it and that could be me!
I read that Morecambe and Wise were voted THE most popular comedians in Britain! ANd DO TELL about your memories of The Beatles! Would love to hear all about the 60's in Liverpool!

    2. My memories of The Beatles are really that they were just another band made up of people I had sort of known. John Lennon was a couple of years above me at Quarry Bank and was known as a talented musician and eccentric. (I inherited his maths text book and I wish I'd known then what was to happen!). I saw The Beatles perform at The Cavern on one occasion. I thought they were ok. But the most memorable remark for me was made by a close schoolfriend after we'd left Quarry. He was destined to become one of the youngest bank managers in the area. When we were walking down Liverpool's Whitechapel one lunchtime we saw a huge picture of The Beatles in the window of NEMS (North End Music Store) which was owned by Brian Epstein who managed The Beatles. My friend's comment was not as disastrous his career as the executive of HMV who turned them down but was "Have you seen them perform? They'll never go anywhere." How wrong can one be?

    3. Graham!! You were at the Quarry Bank School the same time as John Lennon? AND had his Math book? WOW! Thank you for sharing this!
Most people don't know that there were a LOT of bands in the Liverpool area during this time period. What was the reason behind their incredible rise to the top? It fascinates me...they had talent, certainly, and charm and good looks, but it is all about the TIMING and also, those people that you meet who help you along. Brian Epstein and George Martin are the main reasons that I think the Beatles became such a HUGE success.
Funny about your friend saying they would never go anywhere...I will tell my son that comment!
Jan. 28, 2012...that is when I did a post about the Beatles if you would like to read it. I LOVE them, they made the world come into color for me as a six year old!
      Thanks again, Graham!
(Wondering...did you become a fan of the Beatles, or could you never get your head past thinking of them as just one of the local lads?)

  5. Thank you for all the lovely mentions, Kay - I was quite overwhelmed! The Beatles clip was a great find and your comment about the lack of screaming made me laugh. My Dad regularly teases my Mum about how she used to complain about screaming when they went to concerts back in the 60s :) x

    1. Oh Julie, I loved your post on Morecambe, with your photo of all the bird sculptures, the statue of Eric Morecambe, the photo of the mudflats and the link to the man who shows people over them, the beautiful hotel, the old boat with the peeling pain, your heart-stone...it was just the post for me!
HA! I had no idea what great singers The Beatles were until I was older. When I was young, not only was everyone screaming in the background, but I ALWAYS sang along with them!

  6. Hi Kay! I have already seen Julie's post on Morecambe. I watched the breakfast video she posted and couldn't remember where I'd seen it before. It was on YOUR blog! I do not like mudflats ick! ick!
There are mudflats near the town I was born in. When we lived there, my brother and I used to go down on the dykes and throw big rocks in just to watch them be sucked down and swallowed. Rumor had it that people had drowned there after getting stuck until the tide went over their heads. Then there were huge mudflats by my grandmother's house ~ but less dangerous. Some of my family, including my Mom used to roll in them. ick! ick! Love the Beatles/loved this clip! Have a great weekend!

    1. Oh yes! I had the video of Morecame & Wise in honour of the nice English lady, Betty, who passed away in April. She had met a lot of people in show business and Morecambe and Wise were favorites of hers, she said they were lovely!
Mudflats! I have only read about them, but they do look scary to me, you would not have to tell me twice not to go near them!
So happy that you love the Beatles too, and that you liked this clip. Hope you have a wonderful weekend too. Take care.
