Rum Glaze/Vultures/Country Songs

Hey!  I am not much of a cook but I just found a recipe in my own handwriting, I must have jotted it down sometime.   When I worked as a travel agent, one of my travelers brought me back a Rum Cake from Jamaica and I really liked it.

Rum  Glaze:

2 cups confectioner's sugar
5 tablespoons rum

Mix the 2 cups sugar and 5 tablespoons rum together.
With a skewer, punch holes in pound cake.  Pour glaze over.
  Cheers!

Here's the funny thing, I have never made this. Never bought a bottle of rum in my life and haven't had that rum cake since the nice lady brought that to me from Jamaica back in the 90's!   Funny, isn't it?  Or is it sad?  I can't decide...

I know I am not feeling or looking so great these days but these buzzards are getting too close to me!  (Those are really turkey vultures, and you can always recognize them in flight by those wings outstretched at the tips.)   We call them buzzards but we don't have buzzards in the USA, they are really vultures and they, like most birds, fascinate me.  You may read about them here.

Well, rum and vultures...I think I might be writing myself a country song soon!  Stay tuned! In the meantime, I just heard this song by Toby Keith, and I like it.  Toby Keith writes a lot of his songs, but I somehow thought that he couldn't have written this one, and I was right, it was written by an excellent songwriter by the name of Chuck Cannon.  There's another song that Chuck Cannon wrote that I also like and it is called, "We All Give God The Blues".  I have read some criticism of his songs but I also read something that he wrote where he stated that he knows the spirit in which they were written.

Happy Mothering Sunday to my mother-in-law in England and also to anyone else who will be celebrating this tomorrow!

  1. Hi Kay! You might remember that I am a big fan of the turkey vultures. I am forever taking photos of them. But they fascinate me!!! Random tidbit: Alain and I were married in Jamaica and our wedding cake was rum cake. I'm not even a huge fan! Ha ha.

    1. Hey Audrey!
Yes, I remember how much you love turkey vultures, owls and don't you have a cardinal that you call Mr. Winston? :-) We love our birds, don't we?
And hey, I don't know any bride who eats much at her wedding, am I right? ;-) A wedding in Jamaica, that must have been beautiful.

    2. Good Memory, Kay!!!! Our resident cardinal is Harry Winston (because he's more beautiful than any jewel). We all adore him!!! He's been at our window feeder a lot lately ~ it's so nice to see him up close and personal. Jamaica was beautiful ~ the best part being that we went right back to our room after the vows, put on our bathing suits and went snorkling. I'm not too traditional with regard to weddings!

  2. I had a piece of rum cake once from the Caribbean that was so rum-soaked it gave me a buzz! It must have had much, MUCH more than 5 tablespoons of rum in it!

    1. Uh oh, you might have discovered my secret as to why I loved that rum cake so much!!
Just kidding,I don't think that mine did though really, it just tasted very good and was very moist, really good with a cuppa tea!

  3. LOL- I would get drunk just smelling that cake. I have NO tolerance for alcohol at all. Guess I will never be an alcoholic anyway. Those turkey vultures kind of freak me out...so keep them there, will ya?;>) xo Diana

    1. Hey Diana!
Oh goodness, we are very much alike! My joke is that I am goofy enough, I don't need alcohol to send me any further in that direction!
And I must admit, the SIZE of those birds when they were that close to us gave me a bit of a pause...but then the influence from my Richard (who is like Richard Attenborough in many ways) makes me see how wonderfully perfect they really are! Okay, I will keep them here!! xx

    2. Oops! I meant DAVID Attenborough, not Richard, his director brother!!

    1. You made me giggle!
Now you have reminded me of the Jack Sparrow character from "Pirates of the Caribbean"! (I loved that first movie, but not any of the ones after... I am so picky about my movies.) Do you remember when she burned the bottles of ...now I can't remember, was it gin? That was funny!

    1. We are much alike! The first cake that I had that had alcohol in it was the fruitcake that Richard's mother made, and it was (and IS) so very good!!
And I really like Toby Keith's voice too and I like a lot of his songs, especially the very funny ones!!

  6. Kay, I have so many recipes I planned to try and haven't. Same with books. And while I'm thinking of it, travel, destinations and restaurants. :-). Time pulls me other places. Your rum cake reminds me to " don't postpone baking!"

I hope you are well and enjoying

  7. Yum. That's how I make my orange bars, sans the brandy...wondering if orange brandy could work...hmmmm.....and I'm making a Bailey's cake for my parents annual St Patrick's party (they are 78 and 80 and have held this for a small group of their best friends for 40 years)....now I may be creating a little differently...thanks!

We have turkey vultures around here (as well as hawks and lots of regular turkeys)....very cool and a bit spooky to watch!

    1. Oh, it would be so neat if you used my Rum Glaze recipe that has been sitting in my cookbook for so many years!! That Bailey's cake sounds very good, as does the sound of your orange bars!!
Vultures circling overhead always reminds me of my childhood, watching all those Westerns!!

  8. The rum cake sounds delicious; I don't drink rum on its own, but I like it in cakes and chocolates. When it comes to cocktails, I do like the rum-based ones, but if I have a choice, I prefer the vodka-based ones :-)
Vultures and rum - that really sounds like a country song!

    1. Hey Meike!
I know you love your girly cocktails!! :-) You must know I am not much of a drinker, but sometimes a nice glass of wine is nice with a meal and a drop of alcohol in a food makes for a very nice flavor.
Yes! You will be pleased for me when I become a famous country songwriter, won't you!! :-)

  9. Reading recipes is one of my favorite things to do. Some I try, some I never do because I don't have the ingredients, or I know DH wouldn't enjoy them. I did try the rum cake though, and wow! Very moist.

    Love your sunset photo.

Did you try the rum cake on my say-so? If you did, then I am tickled!
We love our sunsets over Arabia, I keep seeing heart shapes in that photo!

    1. Richard used the zoom lens on those birds! We were glad to see them land and spread their wings like that though. It was at Arabia Mountain of course!!

  11. I often collect recipes and then don't make them. And then I finally do, and they become my favourites for a while, and then I forget them again. I don't know what this says about my personalilty! :D

    1. It means that we are svelte model types and like good food but we can't be bothered that much with cooking since we are so slim and gorgeous. That's what I tell myself anyway!

  12. Decades ago, I used to make a Harvey Wallbanger cake that was pretty darn good. Haven't thought about it in years, lol, and now I think I'll make one!

So glad you liked these big birds. We saw so many today at Stone Mountain, I think they were doing a fly-over in appreciation for being featured on my blog!! xx

I've seen turkey vultures and they do have that interesting, fun coloring.

    1. Hey Kay!
You know, I really only like easy recipes! In fact, I have been known to enjoy children's recipe books, since I like simple foods that are easy to make! Am I sad or what?
Those turkey vultures are important for the environment, they clean up all the dead animals on the side of the road, that's a big thing in Georgia!

  15. Every Ides of March (coming up very soon) my neck of the woods has its own version of the return of the swallows to San Juan Capistrano. We have the return of the "buzzards" to Hinckley Township, Ohio..........This has been an official celebration since 1957. I live in Bath Township which boarders Hinckley...Read all about it in wikipedia or here:

    Such a claim to fame!

Some people might make fun of it, but I am not one of them. I love birds and I would be tickled about the celebration of the return of the "buzzards"!
Thanks so much for your comment!! :-)

  16. We have turkey vultures here too ... they're amazingly large and so graceful in flight, but not as prepossessing on the ground.

Never had rum cake, but when I was a kid my dad used to receive rumballs as a Christmas gift from a coworker. We were Baptist in those days and the rumballs always had a whiff of delicious sinfulness about them.... so much so that I never dared taste them. :)

    1. Turkey vultures are a bit clunky on the ground but very graceful in flight. Ha! Makes me wish I could fly!

Like you, I come from a Baptist background and would have been very surprised to have tasted or even smelled alcohol in baked goods. When I married an Englishman, I got over that!!

  17. The turkey vultures seem to be taking over here and the more they encroach upon the little forest behind us, the less we see other birds. The only things that hang out in the same space are the crows. I dislike both.
