The Shawshank Redemption

I love books and I love movies.  A few, like "To Kill A Mockingbird" are just as good as the book. I very rarely say that about a movie but some films are done so very well that they do great justice to the written word. And after all, even if a film is not based upon a book, there is still a screenplay involved, words behind the images that we see.   One of my favorite movies is "The Shawshank Redemption" and when I first saw it years ago,  I realized that I already knew the story behind it.  It was based on a short story by Stephen King called " Rita Hayworth And Shawshank Redemption".   If you haven't seen it, I really don't want to spoil it for you but it is a very good film and I highly recommend it.  I was very pleased recently when I discovered The Inkspots.  After spending a great deal of time listening to all that I could find by them, I realized that I knew one of their songs but I couldn't think where I had heard it. After some research, I found that it was in "The Shawshank Redemption"!  I found it for you here and I hope you like it as much as I do.  It is called "If I Didn't Care"...

Blue Orchids
There is a pivotal scene in the movie and it also involves some beautiful music by Mozart.  What an incredible scene!  It is one of my favorites!  And I must tell you that the ending of this movie is also one that I can still see in my mind's eye, it is that perfectly done.
The photo of the blue orchids is one that Richard took for me when we stopped off at a store  yesterday.  Richard has a good eye for color, don't you think?

    1. Thanks, Susie! I've never seen a blue orchid before, and just had to get Richard to take that photo. I hope it's not against the law to take photos of flowers in grocery stores!

  3. As I mentioned in the previous post, this movie is wonderful! The prison where it was filmed is the Historic Mansfield Reformatory...about 15mi from my house. The prison is haunted..so they say...and a group of us from work went on a ghost hunt there a few years ago. All night! What a blast and seeing where all the scenes were shot was cool too. Did I see a ghost? Well...no. But my camera and flashlights with all new batteries died..each time I replaced the batteries..they died. My camera had to be sent in to get fixed. It was a new camera too! So did I see a ghost? No, but maybe they saw me! Fun anyway! Oh, also my tire went flat in the parking lot..paranormal? No, just a "paira" nails!

    1. Now, you see, this is why I LOVE to blog! Thank you so much for sharing this with me! And I think YOU should do a post about this movie and show some photos, how about it?
OH, pair a nails...you are too funny! I would imagine that a place like that would have a heavy atmosphere about it. Don't forget now, I will be looking for a post about it now, okay? No rush now, when I boss people around, I give them all the time they want! ;-)

  4. I love The Shawshank Redemption! I have seen it three times, and I never get tired of it. I also have the book, but haven't read it yet. This upcoming year I will make it a point of reading it.

That is a gorgeous photo. Yes, Richard certainly does have a good eye for colour. But so do you!

    1. Thanks, Martha, I thought you would like it too. Did you remember the song from it and also the Mozart piece?
Yes, I am giggling thinking of it, but I do have a good eye for color, just not a good hand for a camera! HA HA

  5. That is a wonderful movie - and though I've only read a couple of Stephen King's books, I have noticed that the movies based on them followed the source material very closely.

Another movie (based on a King novel) that I really liked was "Hearts in Atlantis" - perhaps not as powerful as Shawshank but very good indeed.

Yes, Richard has a great eye for colour! :)

    1. I will have to ask Richard if I have seen "Hearts In Atlantis", I can never remember the titles of things, he has to remind me what it is about and then it comes back to me. You should feel sorry for the poor guy, putting up with me!
Thanks, I really love this photo, and it was just a quick little snap at a grocery store!

  6. I just bought the DVD of "Shawshank Redemption" this past summer. My late husband and I used to watch it every time it was on TV.

  7. Hee hee. Have you ever seen my Blogger profile? Both movies are listed. TKAM is my all-time favorite movie. I wanted to name one of my girls Harper, Scout (now my bird's name!), Lee or something to do with the movie. Alain wouldn't agree. So the closest I came is Clara Louise (Scout's real name in the movie is Jean Louise!). If I'd ever had a son, his name would have been Atticus. Oh well. And Shawshank Redemption. I can't say enough about that movie or how much I love it. My favorite movie quote is from that movie actually. I love both so much and I was not at all surprised to hear that you like them as well! Hope you had a lovely weekend, lovely Kay!

    1. Well, of course, you know I would love both of them, we think alike, don't we? Now, the only thing, you forgot to say your favorite quote from that movie!
(By the way, casting means so much in a film and both of these films were perfectly cast, don't you agree?)

  10. I agree that it is a superb movie although I took a lot of persuading before I would ever watch it.

    1. If you think about it, "It's A Wonderful Life" might sound odd that it is so inspiring! A man thinking of suicide but being shown by an angel what the world be like if he had never been born? You might see why it was not a hit when it was first shown! And of course, it is a wonderful film, one of my favorites, and it deserved the top spot.

  11. Until learning about it from your blog just now, I'd not heard of the movie. Your mentioning of Stephen King made me skeptical, but without knowing more about the story, I'll give it the benefit of the doubt - and if you like it so much, then it can't be bad :-)
You are right about the orchid picture. It is beautiful!

    1. Ah, Meike, you know I am a non-fiction person, so I must tell you that if you can, read this book by Stephen King, it is called "On Writing". He writes, of course, about how to write, but he also writes of his life too, and I think you would like it.
And please, watch The Shawshank Redemption if you can! And then, watch The Young Victoria, I wrote about that one last year!

    1. Hey Kay!
Since you are in Hawaii, the fact that YOU think the color of the flower is eye-catching really means a lot!
And I so loved the way that the ending was shot, it was perfect.

  14. Richard really does have an eye for colour! - that shot is simply wonderful - I agree with messymimi that it would make a great print. Shawshank Redemption is an amazing movie - I found it kind of tough to watch, though.

I've not had as much time as I like to read all the great blogs, like yours!
So happy you like the Inkspots too, such a nice richness to their voices. I miss that in today's music.
So happy you agree with me, Richard says I talk too much about his photography, but doggone it , I only speak the truth! :-)

  16. How wierd. I was only reading the blurb on that DVD last night. Kate left it as one of the films I had to look at before she came home again in May. She thought it was amazing when she saw it some time ago and so she bought the DVD but I wasn't so sure but now I have read your Blog I will definitely watch it.

    1. No! Not weird at all, just meant for you to watch it!
It is your density, I mean your destiny! (That is from one of my favorite movies, "Back To The Future")
Listen to Kate, and listen to Kay!
      :-)
