Christopher, Singer AND Writer!

Thanks for all of your nice comments about Christopher's singing! He truly is talented in many areas. I found this newsletter from C.'s first grade class and I wanted to show you what C. wrote. (Each month the class had a featured author.)  Christopher always loved books and he still does!  I hope we got him some Eric Carle books for his birthday that year. Our brilliant son!  He has always been a very gifted writer.  In his college journalism class, just last month he got the highest grade on an assignment and he was given the "It Was A Dark And Stormy Night" Award.  This was done in a humorous, tongue-in-cheek kind of way, but C. was pleased to receive it since he has always loved those words.  We have a slip of paper with those same words in his first grade handwriting that stayed on my fridge for many years...

Also, may I show you something else?  I have a letter that C. wrote the following year, a letter that he wrote to Santa Claus.  Nothing startling about that, children write to Santa every year.  However, since Christopher wrote his return address underneath "To Santa Claus, North Pole", it was returned to us within a few days after he posted it.  I placed it inside my "Southern Living Christmas Book".  So, since 1997, I have held on to this letter and I HAVE NEVER OPENED IT.  Christopher says that since fifteen years have passed, then he thinks he will open it this year. (He can't remember at all what he wrote, so it will be as much as a surprise for him as it will be for us.) So...look out for a post about this and I will let you in on the letter to Santa from 1997! (See, and you thought I couldn't be exciting!) That is, if Christopher will allow me to have it on my blog! United States Mail is private property!

  1. With Christopher loving words, he could write many more guest posts for you, couldn't he :-) And I am not surprised at all - he must have gotten this from both his parents. After all, the two of you met by being pen pals! There's a great example of how the love for words (reading and writing them in letters) can turn into love for each other :-)

    1. Hey! You're right, I am going to get C. to do another guest post for me!
You are right, Richard and I both love books. The wonder of it all, C. would not be here if not for the written word!!

  2. I love it that you were actually able to control yourself from opening it all these years. Gosh! I don't know if I could have persevered for so long. I can't wait to see what he wrote. I hope he'll let you post it. Eric Carle was one of my favorite author/illustrators too.

    1. Hey Kay!
That's funny, that is what my friends say to! But I have always loved anticipation, and just thought it would be fun to open it when he was older. IT came very quickly, he is a young man now!
      C. loved so many different children's books, and Eric Carle was a big favorite.

  4. There's just no way that I could have kept it unopened for all this time, Kay! I admire your restraint, but am looking forward to hearing what he wrote.

  7. Oh dear. Christopher should have put Santa's Canadian postal code on the letter (HOH OHO) and then it would have reached him.

  8. Oh, I'm so happy you've decided to open it. I can't wait to see what it says. I still have some papers of mine from 1st grade when I first started to write. I even framed one of them. They mean so much to me! I love this post...

    1. I am such a silly woman, really, but I do have fun!
And hey, guess what, I made some really good fried chicken tonight, the best I think I have ever made. I think because you are now one of my blogging friends, it makes me more mindful of my cooking. C'est bon, n'est pas?
