Flight Of The Butterflies

There is a wonderful movie that I heard about on NPR radio and you may find the story here

The movie is "Flight of the Butterflies" and is about the Monarch butterfly and the fantastic migration of the Monarchs to Mexico.  The story of how the Monarch butterflies were found in Mexico is almost as startling as the butterflies themselves.  A Canadian, Dr. Fred Urquhart, who from a very early age had a great interest in butterflies, ran ads in newspapers in Mexico in 1973 asking for volunteers to find the Monarch butterflies.   A couple answered the ad, a Mexican woman, Carlita Aguado and her American husband, Kenneth Brugger.  They were young and obviously energetic since they went around by jeep, motor home and horses.  It must have been quite the moment when they discovered the Monarch butterflies by the hundreds of MILLIONS.  The British director, Mike Slee, has made a 3D IMAX film about this story and it is in IMAX theaters now.

How did Carlita Aguado describe her feelings after viewing this movie?   This is her reply:
"After, what, 36 years? I can say wonderful, fantastic and glorious — and whatever other words, but I cannot describe the feeling. It was magical," Aguado says.

My feeling, even when I see one lone Monarch butterfly on top Arabia Mountain, is also the same...magical. A photo or a movie is nice but there is nothing like seeing this right in front of you, in all its fluttery, breathtakingly marvelous beauty!

  1. And now imagine that multiplied by several hundreds of millions... almost too much to bear for one's little heart!

    1. Yes, Meike! I can only imagine that couple finding all those butterflies. They said it completely silenced them, they were so in awe by the discovery.

  3. I love monarch butterflies! So beautiful. I have long wished I could see them gathered all together like that but even the thought of them migrating is incredible. I just told my mom about that a couple days ago. I did once since a hundred or more in a park. I am not sure if they were migrating together or what.
    Pretty photo!

And my husband and I saw more monarchs flying over Arabia Mountain just this morning! Oh dear, I might have to have a separate blog on butterflies alone!

  5. We see them once in a while, and you are right about it being magical.

Our usual native buck moths just don't engender that same feeling.

  6. Oh I'd like to see that movie. My neighbor "raises" Monarchs for charity. Last year, she allowed one to hang out with me for a while as his wings dried and he got ready to take off. They certainly do have an interesting story and life cycle.

    1. Hey Vee,
What a wonderful thing to do, your neighbor gets to enjoy the monarchs and for a good cause too. Good!
I find them fascinating. We just saw dozens of them Saturday morning flying over Arabia Mountain and on their way to Mexico. Might have been some of your neighbor's! :-)

    1. We have gone late in the day and have seen only one at Arabia Mountain but yesterday morning, we had dozens and dozens of them flying just over our heads! It was like being under a butterfly's wing, and it was wonderful.
