Beside A Georgia Lake

A good bit of my childhood was spent beside lakes in Georgia.  Just the smell of the water brings back a lot of memories...
These photos were taken on Father's Day and we had a wonderful lunch under the trees beside the lake...it was a beautiful day.   My Dad cooked a lot of food: his famous Macaroni & cheese, biscuits, squash casserole, green beans and peach cobbler! (That peach cobbler could have won a food award...it was that good.)

I

What a magnificent bird!  This is a great blue heron and it stayed here for the longest time.  What a sight when it flew away!  And what a pleasure it was for it to be right beside us at the lake!

Why do English people say "a load of old cobblers", like it is a bad thing?  And why do we call this wonderful sweet fruit mixture covered in this great dough, a cobbler?
Speaking of which, would you like seconds?  Hope you enjoyed this trip to a Georgia lake, ya'll come back now!

  1. Some think the word "cobbler" for a deep dish fruit pie comes from a middle English word for a wooden bowl

No matter what it's called, your dad's looks delicious!

    1. Dear Debra,
And can you just make out the sugar that he sprinkled on the top of it? My sister who is a bit of health nut doesn't like very sugary sweets but even SHE declared this the most perfect dessert ever! NOT too much sugar, just right.

  4. Kay, every time you tell us about your Dad I think what a great guy he is. And certainly, a Dad who makes such lovely food for all to be enjoyed IS great!
Love the pictures and the funny card he holds up for the camera :-)
Our herons look similar, they can't be mistaken in flight for any other bird for their grace and size.

    1. Dear Meike,
He is amazing! Even in his 80's he is able to drive with that big camper to his favorite campgrounds. My brother and brother-in-law have driven it and they both say that it is not easy to pull it on our busy roads. The plan is that everyone is supposed to bring food so Daddy won't have to cook. We do, but we only bring small bowls of food because we know that Daddy will cook anyway! My Dad loves his funny cards! I got him one that had lawn movers on the front and wished him many "MOWER" Father's days!
The heron was such a pleasure to watch. If only Richard had been with me, he could have gotten a video of it. I tried but I am too shaky with the camera. I am trying to talk Richard into doing a post on the Eastbourne seafront, he took so many photos!

    3. Yes, Meike, he keeps saying that he will...but I am still waiting! :-)

  5. Lol, a load of old cobblers comes from slightly risqué Cockney Rhyming slang. They were talking about cobblers' awls (an awl is an ancient tool used to make holes in leather) so think of a word that rhymes with awls, and I don't mean halls!!!
What a beautiful day, the food looks delicious, all in a wonderful setting. I like the pic of you and your dad.

    1. Dear Tracey,
NOW I KNOW!! Ha, thanks so much for telling me that!
I thought it would have to be Cockney rhyming slang, but could not think that it could rhyme with!
It was a wonderful day and I was glad I asked someone to take my photo with my Dad. I take so many of him myself, but not too many of me sitting beside him!

  7. Lovely photos, Kay. You had me at the watermelon and blueberries. My weakness is watermelon as my family knows. I love it. It's so cool how well your dad cooks. Did he do a lot of cooking when you were small. Mine used to do a BBQ, fry up some potatoes and do a good BBQ, but that's about it. I'm so glad you had such a wonderful time. Your dad looks like a very special man.

    1. Thanks, Martha! The watermelon and blueberries were delicious. My sister Pam had just picked the blueberries! (Did you know that a watermelon will float in a swimming pool? Try it!)
My Dad had his appendix burst when he was ten years old and he almost died. During his recovery, he had to stay home and his mother taught him to cook. (This was at a time when he was really needed to help in the fields.)None of his brothers could ever cook, he was the only boy in the family who could. We used to look forward to holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas since our Dad would cook then.
      Yes, my Dad IS special!

    1. Dear Jane,
HA! We are so alike it is scary! My joke is that my Daddy could take an old shoe and cover it with his wonderful biscuit dough topping and I would eat it!
And that blue heron photo? I took that and NOT Richard!! :-)

You would have loved this food! We found out that on my mother's side we are from Culpeper County Virginia back during the American Revolution. We might be related! :-)

Tracey is right with the derivation of 'cobblers'. While we are in that vicinity, ask Richard what 'arris' means. It is similarly convoluted and was much beloved of Malc Crow whenever the town of Arras was mentioned in Medieval History!

Although I have never had the pleasure of meeting him, your father puts me in mind of Grandpa Walton. That is very much a compliment because The Waltons are one of my guilty pleasures and Grandpa is my favourite character. If we can get over to the States next year, perhaps we can meet him. And peach cobblers would be wonderful.

And,yes, Rick must do an article on the seafront at Eastbourne.

    1. Hey Henry!
I asked Richard about "arris" and he remembers!
I loved the Waltons! You know at the end after they were in bed and would call out "Good night, John Boy", "Good Night, Grandpa", etc, etc... We used to do the same thing when we were kids! Would love for you to visit and meet my Dad, ya'll would hit it off for sure!
And I will remind Richard he has people waiting for a guest post!

  11. Lovely pictures of your dad. Food looks not half bad either!

We live in a house which overlooks Bayble Beach with Bayble Island beyond. I just love looking out over water. "Your" lake looks beautiful and a super place to have a picnic.

We have a blue heron that lives in the upper reaches of Stornoway harbour. I walk there with Briagha several times a week and he is always there. Beautiful birds. They nest way up in the treetops and it just looks so odd to see such large birds balanced in treetops.

Where has magic Stone Mountain gone?

    Have a happy day. Pat

I love all birds but seeing something so large and graceful as a heron is really special.
I hope to get back to Stone Mountain soon...and then you will see another header photo of Stone Mountain!
Hope you have a great day!

  12. Hmm, what a gorgeous looking pie and some happy looking family photos. And I do remember the Waltons - and we too, in our family, used to do the same thing. 'Goodnight Momma ... etc.' Wonderful, but it wasn't on when we were bringing up our own children - more's the pity.

  13. Oh my...looking at that cobbler makes my mouth water. Perhaps your Dad could do a guest post with recipes? :-)

The Great Blue Heron is so, so lovely. Our post office here is right on the French Broad River, and every time I go there, I look for herons. When I see them, I feel as though I've been given a gift.

Hey! I don't know if I can get him in front of a computer, but he might give me his recipes to put on here! I will ask him!
In one of my comments above, I said that having this graceful bird beside us was like having a blessing bestowed upon us and I think that you can understand what I mean!
Thanks for your comment, Beth, I was thinking about you and your son, I hope he is doing well.

    3. It kills me not being able to leave a comment on your blog! What happens is this: I type one single key and that single letter takes an AGE to appear, I suppose I could comment if I had hours! I wonder why this is? Life is a mystery...

    4. There are so many things it could be that I would hate to start making suggestions, especially if it only happens on that one blog's comments and nowhere else. Try typing a comment in notepad or somewhere else and than copy paste it into my blog comments and see if it goes in fast. Are you saying it happens on comments on all three of my blogs or just the one blog? I am getting comments from others though. Dunno. :( :(

My Dad just had picked those peaches that week from an orchard just down the road from him! And he gave us some to take home and we had them sliced over vanilla ice cream. YUMMY!

  18. I'm glad someone else explained the origins of Cobblers to you - and so delicately!

I think the toadstool is a Russula called, over here, The Sickener so it wouldn't have gone well with the peach cobbler.

I would never DREAM of eating anything in the Georgia woods! But that does not stop me from admiring its beauty. :-)
Thanks for your comment! Isn't the heron a beauty?
