Good Samaritan

I hope everyone knows the story of the Good Samaritan.  It is a parable from the Gospel of Luke but the phrase has now come to mean anyone who helps a stranger.  We had our own Good Samaritan story right here in Conyers.  This happened very close to where I work and happened at about 4 o'clock during a busy week day.  A woman left a store called Hobby Lobby with her grandchild and after she strapped the child in the carseat, a man came up to her, put a knife to her throat and told her to start driving. What happened next was truly amazing.  She immediately started screaming at the top of her lungs and then, people came running  to help her.  One man, Nharu Wright, chased the man with the knife and followed him in his car and let the police know where the suspect was headed so that the police were able to catch him.   Since this has been reported, we now know that this man had already done the same crime at a nearby mall, and gotten away with it, he made a woman drive to an ATM and demanded that she withdraw money.

I have two links here, if you would like to know more about it.   The first one is from our local newspaper, The Rockdale Citizen and the second one is from one of the TV reports from an Atlanta station.

Today, I read a comment from the Citizen that said this about one of the heroes in the story, Nharu Wright... "Good work, Good work, Good work.  That fella needs a reward. Put his name in the paper and I will make him my good poundcake."  Now, that just really made me smile...    I hope that someone will honor this man for coming to the aid of this woman and I am grateful that she very quickly understood what she needed to do in order to get out of this horrible situation.

  1. I have been looking at your lovely pictures of spring in England and then I read this story. This is scary. You know, I don’t even have an ATM card. This lady was lucky to have this good Samaritan around – sometimes people don’t want to get involved.

    1. If you put this into a search engine, you can see that he did the same thing at Stonecrest Mall, and that was done in broad daylight too. That's what people say, they don't want to get involved. But it is like the man said, he thought of someone doing this to his mother and that is what made him quickly step up.

  2. There are a lot of good samaritans out there. What a relief for the woman that she thought quickly and some-one came to her aid. Thanks for your comments on my posts, Kay!

    1. Dear Paul,
I was thankful that this worked out well for this lady, it so easily could have been much different.
I just walked up Stone Mountain on Sunday, I feel embarrassed to tell you how much it tired me after you RAN up a mountain!

  3. I like the quote from Police Chief Wilson that the assailant was 'just under the influence of being mean.' It is good to hear a story about people looking out for each other.

    1. Dear Tracey,
I was hoping that someone would see that quote too! The paper didn't tell you this but I will: had that man not followed the perp in his car, he would have gotten away with it. It is a very, very busy road and that car would have just blended into the traffic. By following him, he was able to SEE exactly where he was and direct the cops to set up a perimeter in the woods and catch him.

  4. While I would not dare to physically go within reach of the attacker myself, I would certainly call the police, hoping they'd be quick enough, and would help draw attention to what was happening, which sometimes can be enough to deter and attacker; attention is usually not what they are looking for.

    1. Dear Meike,
Look at my reply on the comment above. Had that man not acted the way that he did, this man would have gotten away and more than likely, still doing the same thing.

    1. Dear Sarah Jane,
Do you notice that you hardly ever hear any good news?
I hope that woman makes that poundcake and gives it to him!

  6. I think it's very brave of him to intervene in this kind of situation, Kay. The guy should definitely be feted and given cakes!

By the way, what's a trail buddy?

    1. I think so too, Jenny.
And a trail buddy? That is a legal way of saying, "you're on your own if anything happens to you if you choose to hike this trail by yourself. We are telling you to have someone with you! (Trail buddy).

  7. I was reading this post and holding my breath. Thank goodness it all turned out fine in the end. There are a lot of good samaritans out there; we just don't hear about them because it's always the bad guys that end up in the news.

    1. Dear Martha,
You are so right. It is always the bad news that gets the most notice, of course, I know there is a lot of bad news...but it shouldn't be ALL that we are told about!

  8. It's so nice to see that people still take action! So often we hear the opposite, everyone thinking someone else will surely do something... I am not sure I would have physically intervened, but definitely I would have called the police! Great story and I'm glad there was a happy ending... Love, Silke
