Alan Rickman

Today is the birthday of one of my favorite actors, Alan Rickman.  Most people  recognize him from the Harry Potter movies as Severus Snape.  He is also well known as the villian from Robin Hood, the one with Kevin Costner from the early 90's.  We loved him in the movie, Galaxy Quest,  PLEASE  watch that movie if you can, it is so funny!  I have found a short clip of Alan Rickman from Galaxy Quest.  Also, I hope you like the clip of Severus Snape with the music playing quietly. It is almost like a silent movie, you can see the expressiveness of his face.   Of course, you really want to make sure you see Alan Rickman in a speaking role because of that voice!  It is magnificent!

When the Harry Potter books would come out at midnight here, the bookstores would have a party and people would sometimes dress up as characters from the book.  Our son loved all the Harry Potter books...he really is almost the same age as Daniel Radcliffe, the actor who portrayed Harry Potter.  We always made sure we took him to those book parties! (A party to celebrate a book, you know I had to be there too, right?)  Richard decided that if he put on a Halloween wig and sewed some extra buttons on his old black jacket, how close would he look to Severus Snape?   What do you think?  And hey, guess what, Richard has a magnificent voice too!

Happy Birthday, Alan Rickman, I wish you many happy returns of the day!

  1. Hi Kay, I also love Alan Rickman! I think his voice is like rich smooth chocolate :) I just watched him last night in fact, in Die Hard. He has a mesmerizing on-screen presence.

    2. Dear Jane,
He is really is a good actor.
Even though that photo of Richard was taken years ago, some of the kids there still remember him as Severus Snape!

  2. If I was married to Alan Rickman, I'd made him speak to me all day, even if it was just reading the weather report from the paper! And I would bathe in that incredible voice all the time!
Yes, who does not love Alan Rickman for his voice AND his acting skill? Richard makes a convincing double, although he is a bit too skinny ;-) Galaxy Quest is a very funny movie indeed; I used to have it on DVD and then some years ago sold plenty of our DVDs to make room, and stupidly sold that one as well. I guess I'll have to get it again.

    1. Dear Librarian,
I'm glad that you like Galaxy Quest too! I forgot to say that it isn't a children's movie, there are scenes not meant for children.
Richard does look very thin in this photo! I think he really isn't that skinny, he had taken that jacket and pinned it at the top so as he make it look like the one that Severus Snape wore in the movie.
He really towered over everyone in that bookstore and was a most impressive Severus Snape!
Oh, and our son loved hearing his Dad reading all his children's books when he was little. He let me read them too, but I ask you, which accent would you prefer, one that sounded like Alan Rickman or one that sounded like Dolly Parton? :-)

  3. Oh Alan Rickman, I could listen to him all day. I love him as Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibilty, actually I love him in anything!
Richard makes a very impressive Severus Snape. I always liked it in the HP films when Alan Rickman hissed, 'Mister Potter' his voice dripping with contempt.

  4. Dear Tracey,
Oh yes..."MISSSTER POTTER", I can just hear it now!
The thing that amused me, the only thing that Richard did was to wear that wig and button up a black jacket, and BINGO, Severus Snape!

  7. Love Alan Rickman, he steals every movie he's in, bought the movie Galaxy Quest and we watch fairly frequently. I'd listen to him read the telephone book--loved him in Sense and Sensibility. I think I've seen every one of his movies.

  9. Well then...happy birthday to Alan Rickman. Oh, how I love that man's voice. Both my girls are huge fans of Harry Potter. I've seen the movies but have only read the first book (pretty shameful coming from a bookaholic like me!).

    1. Dear Martha,
I knew you would love him too!
And I know what you mean about those Harry Potter books, I read them all except the last two and I think they may be the cause of my declining health of my eyes!

  10. Hi from Australia, Kay! I had to comment on this post as I've actually met the great man!! I was so in love with him after Robin Hood....I saw that movie at the cinema 12 times! In the end, they would just see me at the box office & say " one to see Robin Hood??" how embarrassing! I WAS much younger then....
Anyway, I went to a play he was in...he & the other actors gave a talk & Q + A session first and afterward I told him how much I - ahem - admired him. He was lovely & gave me a hug. Way before Harry Potter of course! He s in the original stage version of Les Liasons Dangereuse as Valmont. Very upset that the movie part went to John Malkovich ( although he was great) because Alan was the best ever. I've seen him in a great Noel Coward play too...Private Lives. You MUST see Sense & Sensibility...not just for him, it's a fabulous film all round. Plus try & get Truly, Madly, Deeply on Netflix or something if you can. One of his first movies...very British and absolutely amazing & moving if you haven't seen it ( or even if you have!)
My crush has subsided since I've found a wonderful real life husband! But I still think Alan is a truly remarkable actor & talent. Thanks for he trip down memory lane!
