Stone Mountain Square/Music/Family

After we climbed Stone Mountain today, the nice woman who worked in Memorial Hall (the building at the base of the mountain) insisted that we get our Climber's Certificates for climbing the mountain. She told us that she usually works at the East Gate and waves people through in their cars (the ones who have their yearly passes on their vehicles, like us!)  I told her that I had recently made a square for SIBOL www.sunshineinternationalblanketsoflove.blogspot.com . Sue from SIBOL is asking for people to make squares of what they see from their window, or THINGS THAT ARE CLOSEBY, so I decided to TRY to make Stone Mountain on a square.(Sue is in England and this particular blanket will be auctioned off to benefit the charity, MENCAP).  So, Barbara, who usually works at the East Gate, here it is!  Hope to see you again very soon. We love Stone Mountain!
On our climb up the mountain we were able to walk beside the man who enjoys walking up the mountain as he sings and plays the guitar. His voice really carries up the mountain as you are hiking up and it is lovely to hear him sing and play the guitar at the same time. His name is Tony Taylor and he says he tries to climb every day but he said that sometimes work gets in the way!

The temperature got up into the 50's today but it was below freezing last night. Can you see the ice in this photo above?
Hey Richard, do you promise you are far enough from me so no one can see me? Thanks, hon! Those mountains in the background are 60 miles away. Beautiful clear day today!
These last three photos are on the Cherokee Trail and can you see how Stone Mountain looks silver through the bare wintry trees?  That is me hiking behind my son. Today was very nice, since all three of us were able to go to the mountain.   Hope you all like my simple Stone Mountain square and the music from Tony Taylor, someone who just sings for the joy of it, and also the photos of our little family hiking and enjoying the fresh air and sunshine at Stone Mountain.

  1. Looks like you've had indeed a fabulous day! Sun & blue skies here, too, but it is cold. Cold enough for it to snow, when the clouds will come back. Well, I didn't think we'd get away with it this season anyway...

  2. Librarian,
My header photo is from January of last year when we had snow on the ground for over a week! So far, we have a fairly mild winter and I hope it stays that way. We have no equipment to clear snow/ice like they do up North. And besides, I wouldn't be able to climb Stone Mountain or Arabia Mountain in the snow!

    1. SP,
Thanks! The last photo that I enlarged there, the one that looks as if the pines could just tumble off the mountain...Richard took that one, I think he is a wonderful photographer!

I just can't wait to receive it!
    Thanks so much!

  5. You talk about Arabia Mountain - it is such a long time ago but I seem to remember that we also climbed up to Cloud Mountain - with spectacular views - must see if I can find the photographs. Is that mountain nearby to you? I have a feeling that we did that the same day that we climbed Stone Mountain. By the way, the carvings on the side of Stone Mountain were something like I had never seen before - amazing. I really must find all the photographs!! Thank you for such an interesting post. Pat

Thanks so much for your comment! Oh yes, the carvings are huge! It took years for them to complete, I remember it being in scaffolding during my childhood, the 60's.

YES! I think you might be thinking of Cloudland Canyon State Park which is in the northwest corner of the state, near Tennessee, near Lookout Mountain. (Easy to get there the same day!) Could that be the place?

  6. Yes, I am sure that is the place. I have found some photographs of the walk and also Lookout Mountain. I am having such fun routing out all the old pictures. How technology has moved on in 25 years or so. No more photograph albums and negatives to store - just pictures straight from the camera - filed and backed up on the computer.

I am so glad that I found your Blog - wonderful memories.

    Best wishes Pat

    1. Dear Pat (Spesh 1),
Oh, I am happy we now know where you were! That area is beautiful too. Did you go to Rock City while you were there? That was one of my earliest childhood memories! Beautiful, beautiful views there, I remember being quite afraid going over a swinging bridge, but I was in my Daddy's arms, so I knew I was safe!
Please visit again and tell me what Spesh 1 means!
      :-) Kay

  8. Dear Barbara,
We had heard him playing and singing before but he was a good distance away from us and we were amazed at how his singing and guitar playing could carry so well.
It was great fun to have him step in alongside as we ascended the mountain and have a "little chat" as my husband says!
Oh no, now you know what a beautiful model-like creature I am, the secret is out!!

  9. You are as bad as Partner-who-loves-tea! Back views, distant views, making sure her hair is down over her face - what shy little souls you are. It's a good job Stone Mounrain isn't as shy!

    1. Scriptor,
Ha, you made me laugh! Partner-who-loves-tea could have a cuppa tea with me and we could dodge the camera together! We are women of mystery and should be respected as such. Richard is a good photographer, don't you think? He took all these photos except for the Stone Mountain square...he told me to wait until daylight to take that one, but I wouldn't listen!

  10. Yes, we did go to Rock City and to Chatanooga (spelling?) and I think it was around there that we went inside a mountain - leastways, David, Kate and Sandy did - I got down to the first level and then the guide had to take me back up - I thought I was going to die! I sat and had the most ENORMOUS hot chocolate and waited for them to tell me what I had missed!

Spesh 1 is a relic of some years ago. I used to sign off to a friend as "Me" and then someone else started signing off as "Me" too, so my dear friend said "Yes, but you are special and a number 1 person" so somehow over the years it has got shortened to "Spesh 1". He still calls me Spesh much to my husband's ammusement.

I had a laugh at Scriptor's comments. I know Jo hates having her picture taken and so do I. He put a picture of me on his blog once. He lived to tell the tale - just. Pat

  11. Dear Pat,
Rock City and Ruby Falls are both near Chattanooga. Ruby Falls is what I think you are thinking of... you go down, down, down to see those underground waterfalls and I know just what you mean, not my cup of tea at all! (They turned the lights out to show how dark it was without the lights, only my sister didn't hear the announcement and she screamed quite loudly!)
LOVE your reason for being Spesh 1 and what a nice "handle" to use! (Showing my age by using that word!)
And when you wrote that Scriptor lived to tell the tale after posting your picture, that made me chuckle! :-)
    Thank you Pat, Spesh 1!!
