Arabia Mountain/Stone Mountain-Same Day!

Since my husband and I discovered Arabia Mountain this year, we wondered if we could climb both Arabia Mountain and Stone Mountain on the same day. On Saturday, we did! Richard says that we climbed almost eleven hunded vertical feet. It might not be Mt. Everest, but we were very happy about it. Keep in mind, my husband was very ill in late August, early September and we kept promising ourselves we would be on Stone Mountain in October. We had some wonderful times on Arabia Mountain too. Look back at my posts in October and November if you want to see those climbs!  The weather was beautiful, clear blue skies and the temperature in the 50's.  Beautiful for a hike...

The above photos were all taken at Arabia Mountain in the late morning.  All the trees are stripped bare of their leaves but they look lovely and grey in amongst the green of the pines.  The pink flowers are diamorpha and I think that this almost looks heart-shaped.  The circle of stones is in a fairly sheltered spot so it is a bit camouflaged.  I made this back in October and it is still there!

We actually climbed Arabia twice before we left there for the day! Straight home for a cup of tea and a bite to eat and then, back out again for Stone Mountain, where we stayed until sunset and then went to see some of the lights at the base of the mountain.  The sun was low and the shadows that were cast on the mountain were very elongated.   I wish the camera could see it the way that our eyes did!

That is Atlanta in the distance!
This is the lake in the shadow of the mountain.   Those are the cable car lines in the photo.

Wait, is that an angel on Stone Mountain?
Nope, it's only me!  Richard caught me in the sunshine!

That is Richard's shadow on the left of this photo.
See how lovely the light is?

Here we are two thirds down the mountain and we just watched the sun set.

Hope everyone is having fun this time of year.  Wish everyone as much joy as we had on TWO mountains!

  1. Kay, I am so happy for the two of you that you are able to do such hikes again, looks like Richard has really made a full recovery!
Thank you for the beautiful pictures. I know what you mean about the camera not being able to see what your eyes did; it happens to me often enough that I want to capture a particularly interesting and beautiful play of light and shadow, but this is very difficult and I suppose one has to be a very, very talented painter in order to really capture such atmosphere.

  2. Hello Kay:
This is some achievement for you both, but especially for your husband to have been able to do this climb after his recent illness. We are so very happy for you.

And the images are both lovely and full of interest.

  3. Librarian,
We are grateful that we could do it. Richard seems to be much better when he can get out and exercise like we did on Saturday. If he sits or stands for long periods, that is a different story.
There are times when I long to be able to paint something that I see...

  7. I love your pictures and congratulations on your two climbs. We love the view of Atlanta from the top of Stone Mountain. Years ago, my husband worked in Atlanta, and we did a lot of touring around the city. We always loved to climb Stone Mountain. Have a lovely Christmas with your family.

  12. Elizabeth,
Thank you! And I loved your description of your beach visit with your friends. Amazing that you saw that meteor, I have no doubt that was from your friend! Have you ever heard of a poem called Afterglow?

I'd like the memory of me
    to be a happy one.
I'd like to leave an afterglow
of smiles when life is done.
I'd like to leave an echo
    whispering softly down the ways,
Of happy times and laughing times
    and bright and sunny days.
I'd like the tears of those who grieve,
    to dry before the sun
    of happy memories
that I leave when life is done.

This is what a woman from my church, one of the most religious people and quite honestly, one of the best Christians I have ever known...this is what she chose to have printed in her..oh what do you call it, her memorial page, the one they give out to you when you attend the funeral.

I hope you have a lovely week too!
    Hugs to you,
    Kay

  13. Hello Georgia Girl,

Thank you so much for your post on Stone Mountain. I stubbled on your blog via Scriptor who is a very good friend of mine and my family. My daughter has a Southern American Godmother and your blog brought back so many memories of 25 years ago when she was just a toddler and we took her to Atlanta to visit her Aunty Sandy. One very English little girl grew up learning so much from her American "Aunty".

We too climbed up Stone Mountain - such wonderful views - so from the Isle of Lewis in the Outher Hebrides (Western Isles), Scotland I thank you so much.

    Happy New Year to you.

  14. Dear Spesh 1,
Oh, I had just a lousy day today. Imagine my delight when I just found that you left me this comment! It made my day!!!
You are from the Isle of Lewis, how wonderful, I would love to see it! And I am so happy that you also climbed Stone Mountain and have fond memories of it. I know that I must drive folks crazy about Stone Mountain and Arabia Mountain, but doggone it, they ARE beautiful!
Please let Scriptor know that I am thinking about him and hope he is doing better now.
And Happy new year to you too, please visit my blog again!

    1. Hello Jacqueline! What a lovely comment you have left me!
Oh dear, I don't get out much but the places that I visit, I enjoy being out in nature very much. Stone Mountain, Arabia Mountain and Panola Mountain are not too far from where we live, so those are the main places I seem to write about!
Thanks, again, for your comment here...much appreciated. x

Honestly, I am a very funny person if you met me, but on my blog, I am as serious as a judge. And yes, YOU are the one who first told me about Cloudland Canyon! Did you see the video that I told you about? The waterfall was just gorgeous there! Pat, I am very grateful for you and your visits to my blog and for your kind comments. Walk on your beach and wave over to me, would you? Take care. Love, Kay x
